The trade union movement is under the greatest assault in it’s history yet the AFL-CIO which claims to represent 13 million workers is completely paralysed. They have refused to call any national marches or protests against the privatization of all federal jobs, the effort to eliminate overtime or the abolition of labor rights under the "Homeland Security Act" for over 170,000 workers.
Instead they spend their time snoozing with Democratic party corporate flunkies like Gray Davis and arranging to give him millions dollars of union dues without a vote of the rank and file. They also have continued to give a black check to Bush for his war on Iraq and the continued brutal occupation.
Join the Bay Area Workers Democracy when we have a report back on a national rank and file labor conference in Chicago on August 3 and a protest at the Drake Hotel in Chicago where the AFL-CIO executive council was meeting. The conference had workers report from Chicago IAM 701, SEIU 73 HC, many UAW locals, IBT 743 and the UBC as well as other unions. The AFL-CIO was so fearful of the protest that they banned long time labor journalist Harry Kelber http://www.laboreducator.org from have taking a room at the hotel. The 89 year old reporter was labeled a "security risk" by AFL-CIO officials.
