Discount Radon Tests, Mitigation Systems for Renters
American Radon announced today that they will lead a campaign to help people rid their homes of airborne radon.
Oxford, MI--American Radon announced today that they will lead a campaign to help people rid their homes of airborne radon. John Morgan, owner of American Radon and doityourselfradon.com, announced that his company will be giving seniors, low-income families, and renters discounted tests and mitigation systems if needed.
“When we started offering discounted mitigation units on the internet for do it yourselfers, I was overwhelmed by the number of people who simply couldn’t afford a professional system. Each system sold included step by step directions, but there are a lot of people who simply cannot install their own units. Now they don’t have to worry, American Radon will do it for them,” John said, continuing that “American Radon is concerned that our seniors may not know that they are living in a home with radon, children may be playing and sleeping in dangerous basements, and that landlords may not be testing the homes that they are renting.”
Radon is a radioactive gas found in nature. It has no color, odor or taste and is chemically inert. Its source is uranium, which is found inmost soils. As the uranium molecule decays to form stable lead, it changes from one radioactive element to another. Partway through this cycle, the element radium becomes radon which, as a gas, moves up through the soil and possibly into homes.
Radon has long been a concern of local and federal officials. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Lung Association and the American Medical Association agree that radon causes thousands of preventable lung cancer deaths every year. This is especially true among smokers, since the risk to smokers is much greater than to non-smokers.
Former Governor John Engler reported that “More than one in eight Michigan homes could have an elevated indoor radon level.”
Christine Todd Whitman, Former EPA Administrator said "Twenty-two thousand people die from lung cancer each year in the United States from exposure to indoor radon. Yet Americans could help prevent these deaths and protect their families by testing their homes for radon as soon as possible."
