WHY ARE WE PROTESTING?
We are protesting because the U.S. culture and society is becoming increasingly militarized. We oppose the idea that our security as a nation can best be preserved by invading and occupying other sovereign nations. We protest the recruitment of youth—a disproportionate number of which are people of color—as hired killers used to advance the G. W. Bush administration’s policies aimed at the expansion of the U.S. Empire and the control of Middle East oil resources.
We also want to bring the public’s attention to the fact that military recruiters often use deceptive, if not outright false, claims and promises to lure young people into military service. Recruiters do not mention that if recruits survive combat they are most often left with a decreased chance of finding gainful employment after military service, as well as a greatly increased chance of ending up with life-long deep psychological and/or physical scars. (See the flyer, “Before You Enlist” for more details.)
WHAT DO WE WANT?
We support a more humane U.S. foreign policy—a policy that emphasizes international cooperation, the reduction of weapons sales, and the eventual elimination of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction worldwide. We support our troops by calling for them to be brought home immediately. We call for the presence of a UN peacekeeping force and a UN led plan for democratic self-governance in Iraq.
