Gov. Dean's Police State of Vermont

by Scott Huminski (s_huminski [at] hotmail.com)
Dean's subversion of the bill of rights in the context of judicial appointees and criminal prosecutions
In a 1997 Vt News Bureau interview, Dean admitted his desire to appoint
judges willing to subvert the bill of rights. Now the fallout from Dean's
appointments are before the US 2nd Circuit at Foley Square, NYC in two
outrageous cases. Docket #s 03-7036, 02-6150, 02-6199, 02-6201 One case is
being prosecuted by Washington, DC first amendment attorney Robert
Corn-Revere against two of Dean's judges for their banishment of a Vermont
"citizen-reporter" for life from all state courthouses because he criticized one of Dean's judicial appointees. The other case features Dean's judges violating Double Jeopardy, First Amendment, State law
and the State constitution. See Docket No. 99-445 (Vt. Dec. 13, 2000), aff’g, Docket No. 167-1-99 WmCr (Windham D. Ct. Aug. 30, 1999) Both cases have been briefed before the Manhattan Court awaiting oral argument.

Below are links regarding Dean's voicing his problem with the Bill of
Rights. He constantly complains about "legal technicalities" (i.e. the Bill
of Rights) as he did in the June meet the press interview.

A commentary on Dean's subversion of the public defender system.

http://www.talkleft.com/archives/003681.html#003681

Criminal sentences doubled during Dean's tenure as a result of his appointments. I wonder how many of those serving these inflated sentences were also subjugated to constitutional deprivations at the hands of Dean's Judicial appointees leading to their convictions? How many of those serving inflated sentences were prejudiced by Deans' subversion of the public defender system mandated by the 6th amendment? Dean and Ashcroft should do lunch sometime, they are very similar.

Glad to see others uncovered the fraud that Howard Dean is. Notice he's become the darling of corporate media - gee, wonder why? Corporate media now quotes him even on articles not remotely related to the campaign.

Uh -- ever lived in Vermont? The United States is not very uniform in terms of political attitudes. What's a "liberal", what's a "moderate", what's a "conservative" and what sorts of attitudes you would expect to find associated with these labels varies greatly region to region, state to state.

Dean is indeed a "moderate" FOR VERMONT. Which is NOT a "police state". In fact Vermonters tend to take their liberties pretty seriously, though in a different sense than their neighboring New Hampshirites. Might I point out that "liberal" might mean something different in Vermont than in California (a different set of priorities). Might I also point out that Vermonters selected a "socialist" to represent them in Congress (which even the most "liberal"/"progressive" district in anywhere else in the country has failed to accomplish).

Now that's neither here nor there with regard to the question of whether "progressives" should support a candidate nominated by the Democrats (whomever that turns out to be). And in fact, the crux of that decision should be less the person than whether the "progressives" will be offered ANY crumbs in return for their support (say at least one or two "planks") as opposed to the way Al Gore ran last time.

But to describe Dean as "too conservative" on his record is ridiculous. The question the Dems would be considering is whether in NATIONAL terms he is too "liberal". The evident strategy fo the Dems is to attempt to get votes from the "Country Club Republicans" turned off by the social conservatism of the current Republican coaltion while somehow getting those to the "left" to vote for them as "the lesser evil". It is in THIS context you need to ask whether Dean is a suitable candidate for them.

Supporting the death penalty, killing the state's medical marijuana bill, refusing to support gay marriage (only civil unions), being pro corporations, supporting preemtive war as a policy, saying your views are in line with AIPAC (therefore supporting targetted assasinations - how democratic!), etc., etc.

He is NOT liberal of progressive in any sense. He himself laughs at anyone who calls him that.

Dean's statement on "re-evaluation" of our "civil liberties".

Maybe Dean is Ashcroft. -- Scott Huminski

by save the country, vote Dean
It is very sad to see people disparaging Dean so quickly, because Dean is the only contender who has the balls to beat Bush. No other Democrat holds a card in this awful deck of money stacked against them.

If we want Bush out, we should vote for the person who can actually get him out.

I can see already that the Greens and the far left will defeat whatever momentum Dean gets -- then again, Gore did get the majority of votes in 2000, so maybe you will not be able to deliver the White House to Bush again.

Dean has a huge surge of support amongst people of all ages, but particularly the young. See the link.
