Hate crimes against young in Davis, CA

by Agnes Johnson (aajsyr [at] yahoo.com)
My daughter & I lived in Davis CA, moving there Sept '01. We survived 9-11 and we survived an Amtrak crash 9-13. But the racism in Davis almost destroyed my daughter.A suicide of her 13 yr old friend proved where hate crimes & elitism lead. We lived to tell the story.
We have filed a case of racial hate and discrimination against the school district of Davis, California. Precious breakable children have been hurt and are being hurt. This is urgent. There have been deaths and hate crimes. My daughter experienced hate crimes, racism and harassment and was affected to such a level that we have moved from Davis, CA.
The level of racism and classism is so entrenched and families are at the mercy of the white elite. When I witnessed overt racial hate, (a carload of white youths wanted to see the terror on my face) I filed with the police immediately as I got their liscence plate number. The police found them and told me their parents would get them counseling and I was emailed an apology by one of the boys. I couldn’t believe this.
When my daughter experienced overt, racial ridicule in 2003, by white male students making monkey-like movements around her as she tried to perform a dance from Trinidad, during Black History Month, I knew that was the breaking straw for her. You see, the schools did not celebrate Black History Month and she took this on as a project to share what was normal in other parts of the US. A week later when I saw my daughter collapse in grief on the school campus upon learning the suicide death of her friend, the decision was made to get her away from Davis. See attachement about his death.
In 2001, I was told to be patient when we felt a climate of racism and no real action or protection being shown. My daughter told of racial jokes and harassement and I the parent did not feel welcomed at the school. Teachers seemed to not see or hear racists comments, being said on a daily basis, in their classrooms.
In July 2002, we parents, started sharing and finding similar events of harassement and the school’s failure to take action. Complaints seemed to go nowhere and the Superintendent actually stated that he received no complaints from parents. My first formal meeting with him and BECA (Blacks for an Effective Community) was where I heard an actual death threat against an African American male honor roll student by white students in the HS. I witnessed the superintendent encouraging the parents, to keep all quiet. This student could enter Univ. of CA in Davis on early enrollment and the son could take his senior year courses off the Davis HS campus. The mother cried at this meeting and at the next meeting stated her son just wanted to get out and never return. She told of a web site with racist writings and her son’s name listed to be killed. My shock was that the Supt. Never offered words of accountability of white perpertrators and police intervention.
Many of us started to meet with a rep of the DOJ community resource person, Booker Neal. We tried to work with the school system and found that systemic segregation and the coddling of Caucasian perpertrators. We were being labeled troublemakers when in Nov 2002, we request a Standard Operating Procedure before a Columbine event happened in Davis. . When the district’s own complaint supervisor documented how the district was not in compliance with their own Safe School’s mandate and started documenting teachers and even a principal engaging in racist behavior, she was isolated from her job. A Hate Crime Grand Jury started calling people in.
In 2003, all exploded in Davis. Enclosed are only a few of them. I have done research and found that the identical reports came to the Dept of Justice as far back as 1974. Recommendations that fit exactly to today’s events were made then but never enacted. 20 years ago a Vietnamese boy was stabbed to death on the HS campus after enduring months of racial torment, and the same things we did, were done then. The principal at that time went on to become today’s Superintendent. In 1985, when racial epithets were running rampart on HS campus, the same principal stated that he didn’t hear of any racial tension. Same statements he gave in 2002. When white students at JHS doned black face and performed a minstrail like dance in a play, please do read what he said at that time, that should have sent off alarms. Instead the same person was bumped up the ranks
My daughter went very quickly from a B student to a student Failing every subject. She went from a mover and shaker to a person who was moved and shaken. And this happened in one year and a few months. The Dept of Justice in San Francisco now says the time limit for the episodes in my daughter’s life are no longer viable to be looked into and also because we cannot put an exact date and time when the racist jokes or names were called this is no longer viable for discrimination. The event with the Black History Month doesn’t fit into the little box of discrimination because we could not make out what the white students were saying to my daughter as she danced, and my daughter was too traumitized to hear their words. She could only make out their faces of hate and their laughter. I will refile and I will continue to refile. My daughter deserved and many other children need to be protected and be offered the opportunity to a free public education.
We started a group call CARE. The white majority is again trying to lock out voices of dissent. I am convinced this is so much larger than a parent’s advocacy group can solve. I will not just leave Davis and be quiet. We have a story to tell and my daughter has survived something I would never have imagined.

Thank you for your posting. I was wondering if there is anything people cna do to help the situation, either in Davis or Sacxramento.

a college student (female/south asian) was attacked by a group of three "light skinned" women in sacramento last week but decided not to press charges because she was too traumatized. she was hit in the face and seriously bruised. she feels she was targeted because she is not white. her family endures racism in an all white neighborhood too.

funny when I lived in east Oakland this would happen daily to whites, who lived in the area. the residents and the city treated it as a joke. the police said if you don't like it here then move. but when the neighborhood became all black the trouble didn't stop what does that tell you

but we live in a society that systematically discriminates against people of color and the violence has grown worse since 9/11.

so--your point doesn't even relate to what I am referring to: systematically sanctioned violence against people of color. (the oakland police force are a very good example of this.)
by no comparison
but we live in a society that systematically discriminates against people of color and the violence has grown worse since 9/11.

you mean that the murder rates in oakland are to be ignored? or are they to be less in some way than whatever it is that you are trying to promote?

We moved back to Davis just over three years ago. As an undergraduate here, I loved it and when the kids were small, it seemed the perfect place where my kids could have friends from many cultures, etc. Apparently, things have changed dramatically in the nearly ten years we were gone.

When we moved back, we realized right away that the neighborhood where we bought our house was not so racially diverse as we would like it and the people seemed very, very unfriendly. One pair next door to us were outright hostile, demanding to know personal details about us before we could even unload the moving truck. Over time, they vandalized our vehicles, left nasty letters informing us of how "trashy" we were and the other neighbors acted like we were scume if we smiled or said "hello." The domineering ways of this couple took on a life of its own as they increasingly banged on the door, came into our home without knocking and made false accusation or unreasonable demands. The problem peaked when my mother had a stroke and the lady interrupted my phone call with my sister so she could falsely accuse our kitten of killing a large bird in her yard (which it didn't but so what). She refused to let me get back to the phone and then later brought over her husband to threaten me while I locked myself in a bedroom. When 9/11 took place, our friends of certain backgrounds (middle eastern especially) were uncomfortable coming over as we were all harassed in our own yard! The cop across the street, who had never taken the time to get to know us, continues to "check us out" and makes certain that we know he is there looking at our license plates on the cars, checking out our yard, the house, watching us at all times. When we have had to call the police (they blame us for the rental house they rented being sold when they knew that we had nothing to do with it and for a boy committing suicide in our neighborhood when he was on anti-depressants long before we moved here), the retaliation increases and no one has yet to do anything about it because the officers are told by the cop across the street to not do anything about it. We continue to get threats about having backgound checks done on us (they can't legally) and we have been warned that a campaign has begun to force us to move out of our house. We are (mostly) white but are literally waiting for them to burn a cross on our lawn. In the meantime, we are trying to cope with a serious loss in our family, another family member who is terminally ill, and the lack of privacy as these people are out in front of our house at all times of the day or night.
One neighbor told us that we brought this on ourselves because we wrote the couple a letter asking that they refrain from harassing us but rather to show some respect of our privacy if they chose not to like us. We have been told that not putting up with the bullying and not living by this woman's rules are "declarations of war." We are fairly easy-going people but we will not tolerate any further bigotry by some evil people who claimed to be from L.A. until 9/11 when they openly sought out pity by claiming they were really from NY and despite the fact they didn't know anyone who had died on that day. Even so, we are stuck with them as someone rented out one part of a duplex to them to keep them in the neighborhood.

Is it in the water?

As a Black person, I have been assaulted more than three times in Yolo county and one three occasions I was charged with a crime. A racist police tactic here is to ignore hate crimes. They charged me with a crime before I could file charges against my attackers in all three cases. In the first case I spent 5 days in jail with a sore hip after some kid road ragger hit my truck then ran, then hit me and then ran. The driver Shaun Milligan apparently has a mother that works for the courts and was able to pull some strings. I was charged with felonies! The DA tampered with evidence (destroyed my photographs) and suborned perjury (the uneducated kid lied). All to cover up a hate crime and protect this kid. I was convected of vandalism and sentenced to time served. He broke his mirror as he ran me down like a dog. I thought I was going over his hood as he aimed his car towards me a floored his car at me. His statement:" He just stood there squared up with my car, he didn't even flinch".

If you saw a dog in the street would you, could you run it over?

The passenger mirror has three bolts and I just had surgery on my hand yet I suppoedly smashed the mirror with my right hand. I went to the CHP office to report the incident and was immediately arrested and taken to jail. Real basackwards simpleminded racist Yolo County wannabe hillbilly sickos in my opinion.
If that wasn't enough, on Martin Luther King Day a woman called Dr. Leslie Hall followed me from my work and forced me off the road (I was on a motorcycle trying to get away from her) all the while laughing her head off. ?????

Is it the well water that makes these people crazy?

Her statement: "He passed me in the parking lot then caught up to me at the gate and passed me then he caught up to me at the stop light. ??? WTF???? Are you serious? How could the police the DA and the judges all agree to charge me when:
A. I was attacked by a stalker on MLK day.
B. She filed a false police report.
C. She filed a false damage report.
She said I keyed the hood of her car and submitted an invoice for $1,200 that included repainting the bumpers, side panels, hood, blending etc. Hmmm... Fraud? How could the judge Thomas Fall and the DA's Jeff W. Reisig and Diana Hayes and the jury all agree that I would jeopardize my freedom name and solitude to key some white woman's car in Davis morning rush traffic on MLK day. Not only was I convicted, the judge ordered me to 45 days of jail and to pay $1,200 to the stalker woman who committed felony fraud and a felony stalking and hate crime. The DA asked for six months! That my friend is pure hatred and a blatant promotion of white supremacy, racism and subjugation. My only conclusion is that as a Black person I will all ways be judged differently in this country. It seems like it is an acceptable practice in Yolo county. "They" say Davis is an educated and liberal populous but I find that impossible to believe. The DA's tactic is to use the biased jury pool to win convictions even with crazy "over" charges like charging defendants with felonies in misdemeanor cases. See:Enforcement discretion.

I get no help from the Urban League nor am able to get a lawyer to help me with my situation. I feel completely alienated and am disgusted that I moved there in the first place. F Davis!
