Report on Oakland High students and the Secret Service
2 Oakland High School students alleged to have said "Bush is whack" were interrogated by the Secret Service separately for over an hour on 23April03. The students, who are of South East Asian dissent, were questioned without the presence of a lawyer. Authorities at the school or the Secret Service did not notify their parents for nearly two weeks. On April 23rd, two Oakland High School students were interrogated by the Secret Service separately for over an hour. 10th grade English teacher Sandy Whitney called the Secret Service, after she heard the students saying what she interpreted to be remarks that threatened the life of President George Bush, during a classroom discussion about the war on Iraq. Students were alleged to have said "Bush is whack."
The students were interrogated without the presence of a lawyer. The school did not notify their parents for almost two weeks. When the parents, who are of South East Asian dissent, did meet with the school, language appropriate translators were not provided.
During the interrogation, the students, whose identities have not been disclosed to the press, claim that the Secret Service threatened them and their entire family with deportation.
While this specific incident happened two months ago, it is indicative of a larger trend in this country, and particularly when concerning youth activists. Throughout the country there have been reports of students being penalized for wearing certain tee-shirts, wanting to start or join particular clubs, distributing anti-war literature, or participating in various anti-war activities.
This report includes the voices of Oakland High School teachers, a lawyer from the Asian Law Caucus who is representing the students, and a volunteer youth organizer with Not In Our Name.

I think that they took the boys comment in the wrong way. It is impossible for two 16 year old boys to harm the President. The Agents should have let the students get a lawyer and then talk to them. That's the law, they should have know that. I think the Agents should have been punished as well as the school for not letting the parents know.
This whole scenario is like something you would hear from a story of WWII. A person voices an opinion, NOT EVEN A THREAT, and the SS pays them a visit that ignores all of their rights as a citizen. What ever happened to freedom of speach, freedom to wear the t-shirt you want to wear and the freedom to have an opinion on a man or his government ? If you take the time to listen to the audio exert that is on this page you will see that that freedom of speach no longer exists in the united states of AMERICA.
If those kids had have been white middle class GRADE 10 students do you think the SS would have said the same things to them that they said to these students of asian dissent ? Does it even matter ? Either way these PEOPLE live here, just like every other citizen. Since sept. 11th the american people it would seem have been afraid or suspicious that anyone who is non-caucasion is a terrorist or is bent on taking down the president. Last i checked , that meant Bush is retarded...Bush is stupid.....Bush makes no sense.....something along those lines. What it does not mean is " hey, lets go kill Bush", or "hey, i know were only in grade 10 , but lets try to go kill Bush". Like, who the fuck goes into a school to harass grade 10 students especially over a comment like " Bush is whack ".
I dont see a government running this country......I see a regime that is building itself on the fear of its own people. It starts while they are young and still in school . It tells them you cant have an opinion, " we own you ". It tells them to assimilate, follow The American way, The American dream.
