Bee coverage has been somewhat sympathetic, by mainstream media standards. I see a number of reasons for this. First, as noted in the second, Sunday article, the Ministerial is refusing to provide "the media", meaning the Bee, with an agenda until the last minute for "security reasons".

So, even the Bee is frustrated with the level of secrecy.

Second, the organizers of the mobilization have done a good job of providing people with alternative views to the media. Meanwhile, the ministerial provides people who sound like they are reading from press releases. The protesters are open and accessible; the ministerial is secretive and hesitant.

Lastly, the Bee has some familiarity with this issues. They have made major strides since they sent a reporter to Seattle in 1999 to cover the WTO from his hotel.

Don't misunderstand. I'm not saying that the coverage is perfect by any stretch. But, at this point, the mobilization is winning the media struggle in print. I can't comment on television.
