FLIGHT OF THE HUMMINGBIRD

by HEATHER PENNINGTON
Hummingbirds in Arizona¹s Chiricahua mountains may yield new knowledge about the flight habits, evolution, and behavior of the species.
6.22.03
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hummingbirds in Arizona¹s Chiricahua mountains may yield new knowledge about the flight habits, evolution, and behavior of the species. Earthwatch Institute (http://www.earthwatch.org) in conjunction with the Sara H. & William R. Kimball Foundation and the Roberts Foundation is funding a Bay Area teen, Heather Pennington, to conduct research on a team with leading Hummingbird researchers Douglas L. Altshuler, Ph. D, and Gary Stiles, Ph. D.

The expedition was organized by Earthwatch Institute, a group dedicated to promoting sustainable conservation of the planet by partnering scientists with students, public, and educators. Called ³Flight of the Hummingbird,² the expedition will travel to southeastern Arizona¹s Chiricahua mountains from July 24 to August 7, during which time participants will gather data.

Earthwatch believes that achieving a sustainable future necessitates public interest and involvement in the scientific process. The inclusion of Heather Pennington, a 2003 graduate of Lick-Wilmerding High School in San Francisco, as well as other members of the public, will carry on that purpose. To become a youth fellow and receive a grant, Ms. Pennington composed a series of essays about her interest in science, theater, and teamwork.

As part of her fellowship, Ms. Pennington will share her experiences with as many people as she can, possibly in the form of a work of theater. She will attend the University of Southern California next year, as an honors student and theater major. She plans to publicize her findings there.

³The overall objectives of our research are to study the mechanisms that influence hummingbird behaviors and ecological patterns using an evolutionary framework.² (Expedition Briefing, Altshuler and Stiles, p. 6) Specific behaviors will be studied, and morphological data will be recorded.
