Israeli Defense Forces stop Israelis en route to help with Palestinian harvest
Via Haaretz Service:
IDF troops on Saturday afternoon prevented a convoy of Israeli members of the Ta'ayush Arab Jewish partnership from traveling to the West Bank to help Palestinians with their harvest, Israel Radio reported.
The Israelis were stopped en route to an area south of the Hebron Hills following threats from settlers living in the vicinity.
As a result, the harvest did not take place.
Authors David Grossman and Meir Shalev, who joined the activists, told Army Radio that they had made arrangements in advance with the IDF to help with the harvest, but the army subsequently decided to prevent them from assisting due to threats from settlers.
An IDF spokesman confirmed that the convoy was to have traveled to Khirbet Sawana, but said that the decision to stop the activists had been made in order to prevent clashes with the settlers. Meretz MK Ran Cohen said that he would take the matter up with the Knesset Defense Committee.
After the incident came to light, the IDF said that ownership of the land where the harvest was to take placd was in dispute, therefore the harvest would not take place at this time.
The army said its policy was to allow Palestinians to harvest their crops in
coordination with the appropriate authorities, including areas close to settlements.
