My Letter to the SF Chronicle Cancelling My Subscription

by Wendy Campbell
Enough is enough! I could no longer avoid the conclusion that the SF Chronicle is a waste of time, trees and energy.
May 26, 2003

Mr. Phil Bronstein
San Francisco Chronicle

Dear Mr. Bronstein,

I have finally decided to cancel my subscription to the San Francisco Chronicle.

What finally made me do it was first of all the firing of Henry Norr, a very courageous, very accurate, very conscientious journalist whose writing I sincerely admired.

Secondly, I am very tired of reading articles and editorials that put all the blame on the Palestinians for "terror" when Israel is committing terror on a much grander scale every single day, using our tax dollars, while stealing more and more of the Palestinians' land!

I am tired of reading the biased reporting of writers like Don Lattin who writes in one sentence "Jewish extremists and Muslim terrorists" --- do you get it? Why is it always the Muslims who get stuck with the "T" word, yet Jewish terrorists are always referred to as merely "extremists"?

I am tired of seeing erroneous, misinformed letters by blatantly racist Jewish Zionists get published, and yet any letter that is strongly anti-Zionism (and with very good reason) is never published!

I am tired of the scant reporting on the violence and terror that the Palestinians must deal with every day under Israeli occupation. Why don't you ever show an Israeli bulldozer demolishing the home of a Palestinian, which is almost an everyday occurrence, on the front page of the Chronicle?

Why don't you do followup stories on Rachel Corrie and how the Israeli army harrassed the mourners at her funeral?

Why do you allow writers like Don Lattin get away with using the insultingly mild words "displacement of Palestinians" when referring to the violent explusion of Palestinian people from their homeland by the Israeli terrorists who demolished entire Palestinian villages massacring all their inhabitants which happened when Israel was immorally created?

I can no longer justify reading such a biased and misleading newspaper as the San Francisco Chronicle.

Sincerely,

Wendy Campbell
Oakland, CA 94610

Thank you Wendy for sharing your letter. I strongly endorse your choice and your reasoning. Unfortunately most of the corporate media are equally reprehensible, but thank you, thank you, thank you.

Viva the progressive left!

The Chronicle has sucked for a long time. I choose not to support indymedia for similar reasons. You have the freedom to buy/support any media/newspaper you want.

If you like it, buy it. If not, don't.

Thank you for speaking your mind, for letting the conservative right wingers who own the Chronicle hear how you feel. Good for you!

And thanks for sharing this.

Vive le Revolution!

That's why you're here posting comments, right?

Become a conscientious consumer. Don't spend any of your personal advertisement dollars on Chronicle either while there're still other alternatives. Do the same to other nasty corporations including Fox, CCC.... Boycott their shows including American Idols. Ask yourself if there's really a shortage of idols in ther entertainment industry.

I cancelled after the headline f**king story on the protest numbers, allegedly from their bogus 'research.'

Now I only write to the writers and complain about their similarly bogus research and stories. They generally always respond. One of them wrote back once and expressed his exasperation that so many others had written him in disbelief of his story (that they had found spy documents in Iraq left behind to write their stupid stories about). I try to keep at them for as long as they'll keep responding. It's worth writing directly to them and telling them what you think. They have to live with working for McNewspaper, and they're taking the money, so it's up to us to keep them hearing about it.

I'm thinking of cancelling my subscription to the CHRON because it's a fucking boring, yawn-inducing rag. The writers couldn't make the apocalypse an interesting read. The paper has no personality or soul. None. The New York Times may publish pieces by serial liars but, fuck, at least the articles are interesting.

Bronstein needs to stop dodging fucking kimono dragons and spend his time figuring out how to publish a paper that makes you want to flip to the jump page. The coverage isn't just biased, it's unreadable.

What if they got hundreds of the same cancellations for the same reasons? I was thrilled to read your letter. I feel like a drop in a bucket, but its nice to know that together we can add up to a tablespoon!

Don't stop there. Next time you visit a doctor, make it clear you do not want to be treated with any medications, instruments, or devices made in Israel.

by Reality
About half the planet lives on what can be described as "stolen land."

(Given the loose definition these days of "stolen.")

Yet for some reason, Israel, which is not even remotely close to being 1% of the middle east, is expected to give up about 25% of itself, while the 99% of the middle east that muslims own apparently isn't big enough.

ALso, it's interesting how people demand that israeli jews return "stolen land" to muslims, yet those same people do NOT demand that arab muslims in the 20 or so muslim countries that "stole land" from jews return it as well.

In other words, the israeli jews are expected to do favors for people who want to kill them, yet the arabs of iraq, iran, lebanon, syria, kuwait, egypt, jordan and yemen have no obligation to give "stolen land/homes/etc." back to the jews that wound up having to flee to israel for safety.

THe double standards that exist against israel are gross.

No, this isn't about "playing the victim" as the closet anti-semites like to accuse. This is about being FACTUAL, BALANCED and LOGICAL. If you call for one side to be given reparations, those on the other side should be given the same. If you want to make israeli jews give things to palestinian muslims, you should also demand that arab muslims outside of palestine give things to the jews who used to be a part of those countries but had to flee to israel. THe fact is, there's hoards of history to be undone everywhere. Why was pakistan stolen from india and turned into it's own country? Should americans all leave and hand back the entire country to native american indians?

The world has no sense of balance in this at all. For example, isn't it interesting how no one minds that in saudia arabia, it's illegal to even BE a jewish citizen? THat's fine, right? Yet in Israel, 20% of citizens are muslim, there are muslims in israel's government as we speak, yet israel gets all the attention.

And consider this. Not a single jew lives in palestine, except for ones called "illegal settlers." In other words, if a jew tries to live in the west bank, it's illegal! And the world is fine with that!

I call for nothing other than BALANCE. Unfortunately, 99% of the world doesn't seem interested in such a thing.

Jews in Arab countries lost their property AFTER the Zionists massacred Palestinians to take their land in 1948. At least the Jews were allowed to leave alive from Arab countries, unlike the poor Palestinians who were slaughtered and entire villages demolished starting on the day Israel was immorally created when white European countries of the UN unilaterally gave away Arab land that was NOT theirs to give away in the first place to Eastern European Zionist Jewish Supremacists who are continuing their brutal ethnic cleansing of non-Jewish Palestinians up until this very moment in time, usurping US tax dollars to fund these atrocities and crimes against humanity.

I'm sure that if Zionist Jews in Israel would be truly secular and democratic and allow all the Palestinians their right to return to their ancestral homeland as according to UN Resolutions, International Law and world opinion, then Jews would be welcome once again in Arab lands.

The Jews made the first transgression against the Arabs and now the Jews have to be the first to make true amends and reparations.

Unfortunately, ALL Chronicle subscribers could cancel tomorrow and the Chron would still be happily publishing away.

Why? Because they aren't selling news. They're selling a reading audience to their advertisers. That's where they make their dough.

The Chron actually cut their price in half to maintain the illusion that they were "competing" with the Examiner a while back.

What makes you think the Hearst Corp. couldn't (or wouldn't) print a free daily propaganda rag?

by brother d-day
i think the chronicle is a great paper. i laso buy playboy to read the articles.

>What makes you think the Hearst Corp. couldn't (or wouldn't) print a free daily propaganda rag? <

Of course they would -- but they're also capitialists, and with a significant drop in subscribership comes a drop in advertising revenue. Companies don't put out money for ads unless a) they're being read by a number of subscribers that is in line with what they're used to paying, or b) they're a large enough corporation (Mobil, Philip Morris) that advertising is as much PR as it is a plea to buy their shit. They may drop their ad prices, though. In any case, I can't imagine a large-scale drop in subscribership being a bad thing, but it may be a blip on their corporate hegemonic radar. For what its worth, I say go for it.
