Oakland City Council Honors Judi Bari with Her Own Day

by sfimcista
Oakland City Council Honors Judi Bari with her Own Day; Gathering to Commemorate Anniversary of Bombing This Saturday in Oakland.

The city of Oakland has gone from proclaiming Judi Bari to be a terrorist to honoring her with her own official city day. This remarkable turnaround was proclaimed yesterday, May 20, in the chambers of the Oakland City Council nearly a year after a jury award Bari's estate along with fellow activist Darryl Cherney $4.4 million for violations of their civil rights committed by Oakland Police and FBI agents thirteen years ago. Bari and Cherney were falsely accused of car-bombing themselves while on a musical organizing tour for Redwood Summer 1990. The First Annual Judi Bari Day of Oakland will take place this Sat., May 24 at 11:30 am and consist of a quiet anniversary gathering at the site of the bombing at Park Blvd. and MacArthur in Oakland, in front of Oakland High School. The resolution follows below.

Activist Darryl Cherney, who was riding with Judi Bari the day a car bomb almost killed her noted that in these days of the war on terror, "The government can not be trusted to decide who is a terrorist and who is not in many cases." Cherney said, "There is a political agenda that the federal government follows in declaring peaceful activists to be terrorists while anti-abortion groups and the Ku Klux Klan remain unscathed. Thankfully, the City of Oakland has righted a wrong. They should do this more often, like in the case of the activists who were shot by police at the port of Oakland during a peaceful anti-war rally. It's OK to admit you're wrong and make amends."

Cherney presented the Oakland City Council with a statue of "Gaia," the ancient Greek Goddess representation of the living, breathing Mother Earth. He said that she would be watching over them as they make their decisions about school closures and police brutality. The statue is the work of Oberon Ravenheart of Mythic Images in Sonoma County.

Wow it's great she has her own special day (so special, sigh). But, ummm, who bombed her? Is true justice millions of dollars for daryl et al or bringing the bomber(s) to account?

I hear daryl is now taking some time off to write a book or something - what about his endless claims to "find the bomber"?

reminds me of the earth first bomb incident another jerry brown idea..we can't fix the city but we can spend months on this?

So Darryl Cherney dedicates his life to defending nature, gets nearly killed with Judi Barry in a secret plot that the cops knew about and maybe even carried out or instigated, and then they gets indicted as a terrorist by Oakland cops who blame them for the bombing, and then he spends over 10 years in the expensive and frustrating process of suing the FBI and the Oakland cops, during which time Judi Barry, a mother of 2, suffers increasingly from injuries from the blast and dies of cancer...and in the name of all victims of COINTELPRO the case is won, and the City of Oakland is pressured to actually reverse their position on Judi and Darryl and they name a special day after an eco-feminist activist and labor organizer, and you think that's "sigh" not so special at all?

It's not about the money and the special day. It's not about individuals either although sometimes it's the work of a particular individual or the unjust death of a specific individual that serves as a symbolic or mobilizing fulcrum on which to lever an entire movement. Judi and Darryl in all their imperfect humanity understood this. For the Black Panthers, the Puerto Rican resistance movement, Earth First and so many others they stood up to government 'intelligence' which has been waging secret wars against US activists and community workers for too many years. Darryl was integral to taking COINTELPRO to court while continuing a non-stop life of pro-labor eco-activism.

What were you doing the past 13 years?
What did you risk?

If you had any experiences even remotely related to the dedication and sacrifice of Darryl and Judi you would'nt be making the petty and derisive comments that you so anonymously and safely typed into this community forum. You're not only disrespectful of the tough work of these victims of state violence, and the hundreds of people in the communities in which they work, but you piss on the best that Indymedia can be.

So Darryl Cherney dedicates his life to defending nature, gets nearly killed with Judi Barry in a secret plot??? AND WHY WERE THEY TRANSPORTING A BOMB! WHAT WERE THEY GOING TO BLOW UP?

Check out <http://www.sonomacountyfreepress.com> as well as Flatland magazine to figure out this case.
by everyone has their faults even the F.B.I.
no terrorist would ever carry a live motion activated bomb in the auto that they were driving! I do not believe, that judi and darryl had a death wish! what was the F.B.I. doing blowing up Subaru's on Pacific Lumber property, shortly before the bombing? It is not O.K. to have a bomb school on P.L.s property, what was the F.B.I. trying to demonstrate to P.L. with that exercise? So ka-boom it sounds like you are in denial, get off it and remember that , yes you are a human being, so start acting like one!

The whole point of this lawsuit was that Daryl Cherney and Judy Bari were NOT transporting a bomb. They were BOMBED. The FBI investigated Daryl and Judy for transporting a bomb, though they knew that not to be the case.

Itt has now been made VERY clear by the courts that Daryl and Judy were wrongly investigated for that crime. They were not transporting a bomb and are not 'domestic terrorists'. The real terrorists continue to roam free (and may very well be government officials). Clearly the FBI wasn't interested in finding the true perpetrators.
