Boycott List: CARE NOT CASH and the Golden Gate Restaurant Association

by RWF
List of members of Golden Gate Restaurant Association from POOR Magazine.
It may not be current, but probably current enough to be useful.

From a September 7, 2002 sf.indymedia.org post.

[POOR Magazine (PNN) is calling for a boycott of the following restaurants which support the anti-poor people legislation; Proposition N "Care Not Cash"

PNN staff writers and editors, concept by Dee
Tuesday, August 13, 2002;

The following is a list of restaurants that are members of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association (GGRA). Please support POOR Magazine in boycotting the following restaurants because they are members of the GGRA, which support Gavin Newsome's Proposition N, which contrary to its claims of "care" will put more poor people on the streets by taking away their rent money, reducing drug treatment services, healthcare and pay folks pennies per hour for their work-fare (the work required by the City to recieve your monthly cash assistance)

POOR contacted GGRA several times to inquire about their reason for supporting Prop N, but they did not respond, so we are asking our subscribers and readers to join us in boycotting these restaurants in opposition to this very harmful legislation.

Hello SF Indies!

I am interested in starting/joining, an "Anyone But Gavin" voter block/community coalition targeting undecided voters and the lack of care for homeless, and underserved communities. It would also be great to start a simultaneous boycott/picket of Golden Gate Restaurants as listed above!!! Let's add hotels too.

The intent is to build recognition and support base for a progressive with backbone... well, "Anyone But Gavin!" The end goal would be to bring homeless issues and comprehensive approaches to care to the forefront, and possibly recruit campaign volunteers for progressive candidates who will better serve SFs diverse populations.

I am concerned that Getty money and the JD (jack davis) tactics this affords will drown out or marginalize arguments crucial to Newsoms defeat. It may prove useful to rally undecided voters/prospective voters around a campaign to defeat Newsom, and other elected Prop N proponents, especially now when big money campaigns rule the PR roost months before the vote.

The CHRONic would have us believe that Prop N passed by voter mandate, only the numbers prove SF Voters were asleep....something like 27% of registered voters turned out. 170,000 (?) votes is hardly a mandate. Like it or not, (electoral politics that is) staying away from the process allows money grubs like Newsom to take control of important decision making processes that we all must live with.

If you have any ideas or have heard of anyone else expressing these views, please post.

Hey that's a lot of good restaurants. I eat at a lot of those places. What about the tax revenue lost? Loss of tips for waiters, cooks, busboys.

by marc

Room 200 will not be won or lost based on who can provide actual real services to underserved communities.

The Mayor's race will rise or fall on which candidate can speak to all working San Franciscans about their concerns.

All we need is more nonprofit social services types whining any of the progressive mayoral campaign into irrelevance to most voters.

Its not just raining in the North Mission (where I live) and the Tenderloin. Gavin gets this. Do the progressives?

-marc
by worker
Tom has a good point. Don't penalize the workers. Penalize the bosses. They have home addresses. Let's see a list of those.
by RWF
the effect of a boycott is, of course, a legitimate concern

but, the fact is, the GGRA is aggressively attempting to drive the homeless out of San Francisco, and make their life even more miserable than it already is

is it reasonable to expect people to patronize restaurants that are aggressively pursuing promoting policies with which they disagree?

and, don't people have a right to know how the businesses they patronize use the money they spend there?

as an aside, you might tell your boss that the billboards aimed at telling tourists not to give money to homeless people aren't very effective, personally, I consider them offensive, deterring me from wanting to patronize any GGRA business

so, my view is that people should consider all sides, all impacts, and decide how they wish to conduct themselves

and, finally, here is a solution: why don't the workers at these restaurants, such as yourself, and especially the ones that are unionized, organize and lobby the GGRA to end the campaign?

by doing so, you would establish a lot of credibility, and perhaps have an impact, and even possibly help one of your coworkers, as I recall sitting in a restaurant out on the avenues a couple of years ago, and hearing the server talk to a friend nearby about how some servers at city restaurants actually live in shelters and other kinds of temporary housing
It is not the restaurants that are pursuing these policies, but their owners. Boycotting the restaurants only hurts their employees. Better to hurt a boss than a worker. These bosses have homes of their own. But what if one day they returned to discover that it was no longer there? Then how would they feel?
by And Angry
And at you for advocating vandalism of the boss's homes.
by just wondering
Are you a boss?
by just wondering why
you'd screw the workers like that. Punish the boss, the boss goes, 'fuck this shit anyway', closes business, employees go elsewhere, get hired by boss, boss does something you don't like, boss's house gets vandalized, boss goes "fuck this shit anyway', closes business - and pretty soon you ain't got shit for employment.

by RWF
why shouldn't people know the restaurants behind the GGRA, so that they can decide whether they want to patronize such politically reprehensible businesses?

next thing, someone will tell me that I have to keep eating at a restaurant even if the food tastes horrible and the service is awful

after all, doesn't that "screw" the workers, too? or, are we all required to be captive consumers and patronize these businesses, regardless of their terrible politics, the quality of their service and the quality of their food?

by the way, people that boycott these businesses aren't screwing the workers, "the boss" is, because "the boss" could decide to stop funding the GGRA demonize the homeless/Gavin Newsom mayoral campaigns at any time

also noticed that no one here who purports to be a worker advocate took up my offer to organize or advocate on behalf of protecting the homeless, so maybe all of you are right with "the boss" in support of Gavin and CARE NOT CASH, which it makes it pretty hard to distinguish between the purported employees and the owners, and consider the purported employees victims

assuming, of course, that any of these people really are employees of restaurants, or care about them

after all, just look at all these Republicans claiming that they care about the "liberation" of the Iraqi people, when they never cared about them before Bush became President, and needed a war to save himself
We don't need bosses. The answer is worker self-owned, worker self-managed work places.

by George H.
Isn't this like the Dixie Chicks things, where people spontaneously didn't want to patronize them because of their political activities, yet we all called it "repression of free speech" or something?

Or am I confussed again, is there some kind of difference here...?
by you need capital
to start a business. Any business.

Banks loan money. You against banks? They've got employees, they're part of the corporate conspiracy, they may make loans to businesses and causes you don't like.

You going to trash the owner's houses for the bank, too?
by f*ckin' A, bubba
Bankers should be rounded up and herded off a cliff.

Burn money. It is the chain that binds us all.
by RWF
A great strategy: in an economic downturn, scapegoat the homeless, by attacking them with repressive measures and directing offensive advertising at tourists.

All those billboards accusing tourists who give money to panhandlers of financing substance abuse and crime really say: STAY AWAY FROM MY GGRA RESTAURANT.

Strangely, the GGRA thinks that it's members will survive the downturn by alienating anyone who views homeless people with compassion.

Given that any change in GGRA policy is unlikely, we can look forward to a similar story around this time next year.

[Closing time everywhere
Economy has killed off 168 restaurants in S.F. in 2 years

Pia Sarkar, Chronicle Staff Writer Wednesday, May 21, 2003

A gloomy economy has sapped the public's appetite, resulting in a net loss of 168 San Francisco restaurants within the past two years, according to a study released Tuesday.

In addition, the San Francisco restaurant industry lost more than 2,000 jobs between December 2001 and February 2003 because of the slowdown in business, as cited by the Golden Gate Restaurant Association in its second annual report.]

I'd add a link, but I'm just too lazy to do it today, and, anyway, everyone knows how to find the sfgate.com website.
by Support GGRA Boycott (4change [at] sfvotes.org)
To all those concerned about Restaurant Workers:

Workers at these restaurants are not the targets of this boycott and can only benefit from pressure brought upon owners who belong to an organization that supports Newsom and Prop N. Are these restaurants union shops, anyway? How about unions involved? Let's find out! Do we want our local eateries to set public policy? Cruel, evil, heartless, entrepreneurs directing public opinion and policy? Phooey on that! Yea!

It seems to me that a creative, well-planned boycott coupled with informational pickets, die-ins, tying up reservation lines, etal...would force owner/restauranteurs and the GGRA out of public policy issues and let them know that many of us do not appreciate their PR tactics or the cold-hearted shafting of the "poorest of the poor."

ook out another wave of completely false, misleading ads and billboards are about to go up all over town in an effort to desensitize the public just like last fall when only 27% of registered voters showed up at the polls. 60% of these voters (175,000) were won over by the big-money PR campaign funded by GGRA. Get real, let's boycott NOW.

sfvotes.org is organizing informational pickets, die-ins, and possibly enough restauranteurs will pull out of GGRA and help expose the groups leaders as tools of Newsom/Getty. http://www.sfvotes.org will be up and running by May 28, 2003
by Act Locally (4change [at] sfvotes.org)
The GGRA is an Bay Area organization with members in Berkeley, Oakland, Marin, Sonoma, etal...Check out there web-site at http://www.ggra.org. Search their dining guide by region and start a boycott in your area. We must convince the owners/entrepreneurs that belonging to the conservative heartless GGRA is bad for business! Threaten to picket , maybe a sign that reads "Makes me Sick at Heart!" until owner leaves GGRA. Just a thought.

To join a campaign to oust Newsom and Prop N proponents in SF contact 4change [at] sfvotes.org

http://www.sfvotes.org is under construction but will serve as a bulletin for event alerts.

got shit for employment??

We don't need bosses. The answer is worker self-owned, worker self-managed work places.

yes but we all can't be professional dog walkers!
by care not cash the politically correct choice
Ah........
this is one of these re-invented AMWAY scams...-or- is this the new ploy of scientology??

yes ladies and gentlemen...
you too can have a fast paced "home based business" that operates right out of "your closet" ....why you can make $2000, $4000,$6000 per week and not leave your home.... just call 1-800-nessie for further details...

Boycott List: CARE NOT CASH and the Golden Gate Restaurant Association
by RWF Monday May 19, 2003 at 01:49 PM

List of members of Golden Gate Restaurant Association from POOR Magazine.

It may not be current, but probably current enough to be useful.

From a September 7, 2002 sf.indymedia.org post.

[POOR Magazine (PNN) is calling for a boycott of the following restaurants which support the anti-poor people legislation; Proposition N "Care Not Cash"

PNN staff writers and editors, concept by Dee
Tuesday, August 13, 2002;

Force Gavin Out of City Hall
by Stephanie Biko Monday May 19, 2003 at 02:02 PM
anyonebutgavin [at] yahoo.com

Do the progressives?

the effect of a boycott is, of course, a legitimate concern

but, the fact is, the GGRA is aggressively attempting to drive the homeless out of San Francisco, and make their life even more miserable than it already is

is it reasonable to expect people to patronize restaurants that are aggressively pursuing promoting policies with which they disagree?

and, don't people have a right to know how the businesses they patronize use the money they spend there?

as an aside, you might tell your boss that the billboards aimed at telling tourists not to give money to homeless people aren't very effective, personally, I consider them offensive, deterring me from wanting to patronize any GGRA business

so, my view is that people should consider all sides, all impacts, and decide how they wish to conduct themselves

and, finally, here is a solution: why don't the workers at these restaurants, such as yourself, and especially the ones that are unionized, organize and lobby the GGRA to end the campaign?

by doing so, you would establish a lot of credibility, and perhaps have an impact, and even possibly help one of your coworkers, as I recall sitting in a restaurant out on the avenues a couple of years ago, and hearing the server talk to a friend nearby about how some servers at city restaurants actually live in shelters and other kinds of temporary housing

It is not the restaurants that are pursuing these policies, but their owners. Boycotting the restaurants only hurts their employees. Better to hurt a boss than a worker. These bosses have homes of their own. But what if one day they returned to discover that it was no longer there? Then how would they feel?

you'd screw the workers like that. Punish the boss, the boss goes, 'fuck this shit anyway', closes business, employees go elsewhere, get hired by boss, boss does something you don't like, boss's house gets vandalized, boss goes "fuck this shit anyway', closes business - and pretty soon you ain't got shit for employment.

no one has answered my questions
by RWF Tuesday May 20, 2003 at 02:32 PM

why shouldn't people know the restaurants behind the GGRA, so that they can decide whether they want to patronize such politically reprehensible businesses?

next thing, someone will tell me that I have to keep eating at a restaurant even if the food tastes horrible and the service is awful

after all, doesn't that "screw" the workers, too? or, are we all required to be captive consumers and patronize these businesses, regardless of their terrible politics, the quality of their service and the quality of their food?

by the way, people that boycott these businesses aren't screwing the workers, "the boss" is, because "the boss" could decide to stop funding the GGRA demonize the homeless/Gavin Newsom mayoral campaigns at any time

also noticed that no one here who purports to be a worker advocate took up my offer to organize or advocate on behalf of protecting the homeless, so maybe all of you are right with "the boss" in support of Gavin and CARE NOT CASH, which it makes it pretty hard to distinguish between the purported employees and the owners, and consider the purported employees victims

assuming, of course, that any of these people really are employees of restaurants, or care about them

after all, just look at all these Republicans claiming that they care about the "liberation" of the Iraqi people, when they never cared about them before Bush became President, and needed a war to save himself

by George H. Tuesday May 20, 2003 at 07:47 PM

Isn't this like the Dixie Chicks things, where people spontaneously didn't want to patronize them because of their political activities, yet we all called it "repression of free speech" or something?

Or am I confussed again, is there some kind of difference here...?

to start a business. Any business.

Banks loan money. You against banks? They've got employees, they're part of the corporate conspiracy, they may make loans to businesses and causes you don't like.

You going to trash the owner's houses for the bank, too?

Bankers should be rounded up and herded off a cliff.

Losing Business? Attack the Homeless
by RWF Wednesday May 21, 2003 at 01:48 PM

Restauranteurs Shouldn't Set Public Policy
by Support GGRA Boycott Wednesday May 21, 2003 at 09:57 PM
4change [at] sfvotes.org

GGRA Boycott Bay Area
by Act Locally Thursday May 22, 2003 at 11:18 AM
4change [at] sfvotes.org

Join the boycott! Bay Area Restaurant owners, the GGRA membership, must know that we do not support businesses that advocate kicking the poor further into poverty.

By spending money at these restaurants you're in essence supporting the Prop N position and falling for GGRAs organized PR campaign to demonize the poor and homeless.

Now, if the restaurant was the only one in town, and you can't cook and you have no kitchen and you have no cooking utensils and no fridge or cupboards, no fire, no heat, no sink...

Don't become another sheep in wolves clothing.

I support POOR mags boycott, I hope you'll join us.

Search http://www.ggra.org>members>dining guide>san francisco for SF eateries...search by region for Gray Area GGRA members. Call and let 'em know what's up.

Dear Mis-Informed, Heartless Boob:

Not all SF restaurants support Poop N. Actually, if you knew SF and were from here, you'd realize that by perusing the list above. DUH! There are many business folks who do not believe they'll save their asses by kicking the poorest of the poor further into poverty...let alone the middle-class--kinda like Syria, you're next.

Where do you come from? Houston? I'm a native SFer and we are proud to have "I Left My Heart" as our theme song...not "Your Cold Cold Heart!"

Unlike you, I am not easily bought by slick ad campaigns nor do I blame the disenfranchised for the restaurant and hotels losing business due to market crash, dot-com losses, corporate welfare, bush's tax-cuts, DOD budget-hogs, oh....fill in the blanks.

Carry-on with your hateful, heartless ideology...the rest of us will do the real work involved in building community not tearing it down.

San Francisco wake up! Too many boobs without yupped out jobs wanna take out their anger on the poor. Hey, Boob, do you work for Newsom? Does he pay? Or are you just another campaign hack/volunteer wishing SF had a Republican Party to speak of?

Let's see....hmmmm....only 27% registered voters voted last November....so that means that 60% of 27% is hardly a mandate! Do the math. Low voter turnout got Prop N passed...so get off your high horse and get real...this boycott sure is!

Peace Love Smiles and More

From: Getting Along Just Fine without Stomping on the Poor
by Reeks of Republicanese
Republicans are tearing down society from the inside out...now their bullshit filter reaches into SF politics.

Oh try as you may to defend this inhumane, fiscally twisted, unAmerican, Undemocratic Newsom campaign strategy. You know, you've pretty much run that spin "sCare" into the ground...getting kinda stale, you know? Like you really care. Your coments reek of Republicanese.

Are you into derivitives or just a dupe of statistical manipulations that serve to guard your base opinions of the poor? The number of voters who approved Prop N was dismal when compared to the number of all registered voters, and past voter turnouts. That has meaning to the rest of us, sorry you don't get the connection, but didn;t expect you to anyway...singular in your defense and all. Noting in yourposts indicate where the money to implement Prop N is going to come from. But that's what hacks do, right. Instigate, divide, dismantle and destroy without consensus.

To all else, we must take the 2002 election year into account since this is exactly what Newsom did when timing his divisive plans to use the homeless and poor in his run for mayor. Timing is everything-- it's common knowledge that folks like Newsom are unDemocratic and unAmerican in that they put divisive items on the ballot when there are no big ticket national items...since big-tickets bring greater GOTV efforts. Campaign finance is also the problem and for that argument I send you off to research McCain's effort in the Senate.

Rather, shame on you for promoting such ass-backward thinking when discussing the fate of people unbeknownst to you. Do you have experience working with the vast diverse poor population in SF? Do you understand that there are no services available and no monies to create services? Or are you one of those arm-chair ideologues dispensing opinions but never respecting the opinions of others and never getting off your bum to enact comprehensive successful policies to alleviate the shredding of our social fabric.?

I respect you're right to live here, do you respect the rights of others or is this to become a town only for the rich and wanna-be idolizers. See you at the polls.
by sCare Tactics
Please support the boycottt by calling your eateries to let them know...pressure from patrons can change owners minds about kicking the poor to advance Newsoms agenda...doubt alot of these owners actually support thsi divisive measure.

GGRA member restaurants are sponsors of "Care Not" Newsom for mayor...do you really wanna give your money to folks who'll use it to kick the poorest further into poverty...just to eat out? SFs got a lot of restaurants not in GGRA.

Stop systematic scapegoating of SFs poor...Support POOR magazines BOYCOTT of sCare Not Cash" sponsors--GGRA, Newsom, Hotel Council, etal.
by GGRA LIST: easier to read by neighborhood
Support POOR Magazine’s Boycott of Golden Gate Rest. Association. GGRA and the Hotel Council are proud sponsors of Newsom’s Proposition N which scapegoats and demonizes SFs poorest—our sick and elderly, veterans and disabled, impoverished families, and the homeless.

Dialogue and debate require one to formulate arguments pertinent to the discussion, not based upon limited opinions and red-herring bait-- especially when concerning the plight of San Francisco's poor and disenfranchised. Facts? Proof? What exactly have you done to put theory into practice when you say your interested in helping raise quality of life for SFs poor? What have you done to alleviate pain and suffering caused by poverty?

Oh, try as you may to defend "sCare not Cash" inhumane, fiscally twisted, unAmerican, Undemocratic Newsom campaign strategy. You know, you've pretty much run that spin "sCare" into the ground...getting kinda stale, you know? Like you really care. Your coments reek of Republicanese. Are you into derivitives or just a dupe of statistical manipulations that serve to guard your base opinions of the poor? Your presumptive remarks reveal your limited, low opinion of fellow SFers and your inability to constructively join discussions regarding complex social issues.

Campaign finance soft money is also a serious problem.

Rather, shame on you for promoting such ass-backward thinking when discussing the fate of people unbeknownst to you. Do you have experience working with the vast diverse poor population in SF? Do you understand that there are no services available and no monies to create services? Or are you one of those virtual ideologues dispensing opinions but never respecting the opinions of others and never getting off your bum to enact comprehensive successful policies to alleviate the shredding of our social fabric.?

I respect you're right to live here, do you respect the rights of others or is this to become a town only for the rich and wanna-be idolizers who force feed their self-serving agendas upon an unwilling audience.

>>Roughly 27% of all eligible voters, participated in the election last fall 2002. Nearly, that means not quite, 60% ballots cast by the aforementioned 27% supported Poop N. That is not a mandate and clearly not a majority.<<

Prop R failed with 61% of the vote, Prop S passed with 63% of the vote, and Chris Daily won his district with 52% of the vote. Would you suggest that we overturn these results due to low voter turn out? Or would you deem that as being UnAmerican and Undemocratic?

Some facts to think about before you play the numbers game because those same numbers can be used against you for messures and candidates you might support.

obviously, low voter turnout is a primary concern, or should be to everyone...participatory democracy is self-explanatory.

Conservatives count on low turnout---that's why negative campaign ads are used...to turn voters off...don't call those who voted a majority...they are a minority...

non-voters, infrequent voters are the majority...folks disgusted with political hacks bs'ing their way into office are the majority...that's my point...

by repost "10 Big Lies" Care not Cash
Prop. N's big lies by jennifer friedenbacz

PROPOSITION N, being financed by big business and brought forth by media darling Sup. Gavin Newsom, would cut cash assistance to the poorest San Franciscans by 83 percent. Prop. N backers clearly believe homeless people will then flee San Francisco – although they're telling voters this will actually help homeless people.

Here are some of the biggest lies the Yes on N campaign is putting out.

Lie number one: Prop. N will guarantee services. There is nothing in this initiative that guarantees services. It simply cuts poor people's income. The money saved goes back to the bureaucrats. Meanwhile, as many as 3,000 people are screwed.

Lie number two: Prop. N will help address the homeless crisis. Actually, Prop. N will increase homelessness. Homeless people will lose the flexibility to rent housing on their own. If some cheap housing becomes available, they will no longer have the funds to pay for it: under Prop. N, you have to have a receipt for rent before you get the money to pay it.

Individuals who live in marginal housing arrangements will no longer be able to pay for it. If they don't have a receipt or a letter from the leaseholder, they will lose their assistance. This will hit poor communities, where many are fearful of being evicted if the landlord finds they have unofficial residents, very hard.

Many hotel operators refuse to provide receipts, so individuals living in those places will become homeless.

Lie number three: Prop. N doesn't take money away from the homeless, it just changes the way it is spent. Prop. N does indeed take money away from the individual homeless person, and that same person will not see any direct benefit from the removal of that cash. Welfare recipients do work for their money at the equivalent of minimum wage, unless they are disabled or in a job-training program. Under Prop. N, they would still have to work – but get paid only $1.64 an hour.

Lie number four: Prop. N provides "services not cash – because we care." If proponents cared, they would spend all that campaign money directly on housing – not on billboards and commercials to mislead voters. Deep corporate pockets should be funding services for poor people, not running campaigns to slash welfare benefits.

Lie number five: Surrounding counties have already instituted this program and have been successful. This is simply not true. No counties in the region have done exactly what is being proposed in San Francisco. And those who have cut cash assistance or instituted vouchers have seen an increase in the number of homeless people, according to the San Francisco legislative analyst.

Lie number six: Other major cities, such as Seattle, Chicago, and New York, have instituted similar programs and have seen huge successes. Again, this is simply not true. Those cites have seen huge increases in the number of homeless people. The state of Illinois eliminated General Assistance in 1992 and last year saw 166,000 more people become homeless. New York has seen huge rises in the number of homeless people since 1998. Seattle gives full grants to homeless people.

Lie number seven: As a result of cash grants, there are more than 100 fatal overdoses every year on San Francisco's streets. There has not been a homeless death study since 1999. But, there was no evidence that homeless deaths are tied to receipt of cash assistance, then or now. Overdose-prevention reports from the Department of Public Health do not recommend cutting or replacing cash assistance.

Lie number eight: Impartial experts such as the director of the S.F. Department of Human Services and the director of the S.F. Department of Public Health support this initiative. These are not, by any stretch, impartial supporters. They were appointed to their positions by Mayor Willie Brown, who fully supports this initiative. If they want to keep their jobs, they support whatever the mayor tells them to support.

Lie number nine: All homeless people are addicts. That's really what the Prop. N campaign has been implying. There's no data on how many people who would be hit by this initiative are suffering from addictive disorders. But there are hundreds of people who now pay fees for substance-abuse treatment who would lose that treatment if Prop. N passes.

Lie number 10: Prop. N will go beyond fractious politics and finally address the issue of homelessness from sound public policy. Prop. N is fractious politics! The city has a homeless plan, titled "Continuum of Care," that was developed by more than 225 community members. Prop. N is directly contrary to the plan. Putting this on the ballot was terribly divisive.

by 67% of SF homeless are from HuntersPoint
67% of SF homeless are from BVHP

Editorial by Willie Ratcliff

Now we know. The loss of 23 percent of San Francisco’s Black population – 20,000 Black people gone in the last decade – did not solve what the City perceives as its “Black Problem.” No.

While 20,000 Black folks lost their homes and left the City, another nearly 10,000 – from Bayview Hunters Point alone – lost their homes yet stayed in the City, homeless. That’s right. According to the Mayor’s Office of Housing, there are approximately 14,000 homeless people in San Francisco, and 67 percent of them come from Bayview Hunters Point.

In the last handful of years, in a dramatic transformation, the complexion of San Francisco’s homeless population has turned Black. Activists estimate that 85 percent of the City’s homeless citizens are Black.

So the “Black Problem” in San Francisco has merged with the “Homeless Problem,” scaring some at City Hall out of their wits. Out of his fear of homeless people and his hunger to be mayor, Supervisor Gavin Newsom invented Proposition N, naming it a compassionate-sounding “Care Not Cash.”

If Newsom’s bulging money bags and his friends in high places succeed in out-polling those of us who still have a conscience and some common sense and Prop N becomes law in Tuesday’s election, thousands of our neighbors who no longer have a home or anything else of monetary value will have their General Assistance checks slashed from about $359 a month to a meager $59 a month. Many of them will die.

Thus Prop N is Newsom’s “Final Solution” to San Francisco’s “Black Problem.”

San Francisco has always been hostile to Black people, more hostile in some ways than the Deep South. A few years ago, the City’s Redevelopment Agency admitted that back in the days of urban renewal – known in the Black community as “Negro removal” – its purpose in bulldozing 5,000 Black homes and 200 Black businesses was to drive all Blacks out of San Francisco.

Since then, as Blacks fell from 16 percent to less than 8 percent of the City’s population, San Francisco lost one of the major attractions that make it the world’s favorite destination. It lost the Black-owned jazz clubs that generously poured music out into the streets of the Fillmore. It lost its soul.

But despite Redevelopment’s best efforts, not all Blacks who were driven out of the Fillmore left the City. Many Fillmore refugees moved to Bayview Hunters Point. So now, by decree of Newsom and his corporate sponsors, it is Bayview Hunters Point that must be repeopled and the people of Bayview Hunters Point, now homeless, who must be eliminated.

Now, right now, is the hour of decision for each of us. Will we vote? Oldtimers say that Bayview Hunters Point used to “vote 100%.” And will we vote for genocide or will we hold high the freedom banner?

The big businesses supporting Prop N – and opposing the public power that Prop D will bring – are the same businesses that refuse us jobs and contracts and credit and even put us under surveillance when we dare to walk into their stores and restaurants. I won’t let them drive me out of San Francisco, and I hope you won’t either. I won’t let them intimidate me into voting for Prop N and the death by starvation of my brothers and sisters. I won’t let them frighten me away from the voting booth.

I simply won’t do business with businesses that won’t do business with me. And I simply won’t vote for Prop N, Newsom’s “Final Solution” to the “Black Problem.” Please join me. If all people of good will vote No on N, we can reclaim the soul of San Francisco.

Oakland Measures EE and FF

Since the police invasion on 10-11 of Thurgood Marshall High School, I am compelled more than ever to oppose any police force that looks at African Americans as the enemy. Like San Francisco, Oakland to a large extent has that kind of police force. That’s why the Black Panther Party was formed. And today, the trial of the notorious “Riders” proves that police supremacy is more repressive than ever.

Now Oakland’s Mayor Brown, with Measure FF, wants to impose new taxes to raise $60 million to put 100 new cops on the street. That’s more police repression at a cost to taxpayers of $600,000 per cop!

Why would anybody vote for that? As Oakland Police Chief Richard Word himself said, referring to the “Riders,” “How can we expect to police the community if we can’t even police ourselves?”

While I urge you to vote No on Measure FF, I urge you to vote Yes on Measure EE. Measure EE is the culmination of years of organizing for Just Cause – adding the requirement to the law that landlords must show a good reason to evict people from their homes. And unjust enrichment is not Just Cause.

All that poor people have is each other. When we’re driven from our homes, we lose those friendships and neighborhood connections that are vital to our survival.

The big businesses and their political puppets who support Prop N and oppose Prop D in San Francisco and who support Measure FF and oppose Measure EE in Oakland are the same ones who lock us out of living wage jobs, redline us out of business opportunities that would enable us to employ each other, evict us from our homes and then, as if we weren’t down and out enough, sic the cops on us and our children.

Will you vote Tuesday? I hope and I believe that you will. “Up you mighty nation. You can accomplish what you will,” Marcus Garvey told us. I’ll see you at the polls.
