Ok, now. Rachel and the other young people were in a field next to the Egyptian border. According to most news sources, she and her friends were trying to protect a doctors house. I saw the Palestinian site's photos of the field and none of them showed a house.

I went to the Israeli site for more information -- not much but they claimed the bulldozers were looking for tunnels. No pictures. Now when is a field being bulldozed in search of illegal tunnels (terrorist tunnels? black market?) the sort of thing an activist protecting a doctor's house would be working in? I found that odd. Did those young folks just play chicken with the bulldozers for practice?

Another self-hating Arab-loving Jew! It's obvious that Adam Shapiro learned how to lie from his Arab friends! Rachel Corrie wasn't photographed being run over so what Adam writes is purely anti-Israeli propaganda. The whole incident was an accident. There are many secret tunnels leading from Egypt to the Territories. They are used primarily to smuggle weapons, and sometimes, terrorists. The existence of these tunnels is a fact.

The heads of the ISM knew that the war on Iraq presented a special difficulty for them. By Mid March it was clear the war is about to start, the world attention is focusing on Iraq. The American military promised to bomb Iraq with “Shock and Awe” campaign that the left believed will kill thousands of Iraqi civilians. The American attack on Iraq was taking attention form the ISM accusations of Israel. They needed to do something about it and quickly resume their status as “Headline grabbers” for the Palestinian war effort.

It took time for the correct method of propaganda to be activated, the world heard many times about the “Evil Zionist” who kill Palestinian, to remain in the head line the world of news require something new (“Fresh Blood”) to remain in the headlines. The ISM knew how to provide it.

It is not clear who exactly came up with the idea of how a wounded western peace activist will be used to grab the headline. The idea was to intensify the ISM activity in the Raffah war zone. The ISM heads knew what is going on, there was constant war between Palestinian warlords who operate the explosive smuggling operation (via tunnels under the border) to the Israeli soldier guarding a small narrow border road. Was the activist volunteered or was she sent to Raffah without knowing what could occur to her – we will never know that.

On March 16, just few days before the start of the Iraq war the ISM succeeded in garbing the world attention. It put the ISM and the Palestinian effort back on front page. With this success the ISM need to continue this new trend as long as the war in Iraq wages on. Stories from Iraq were dwarfing the claims on the “Evil Zionist”. Every day the American viewer saw how American soldiers hit with suicide bomber are forced to erect roadblocks in Iraq. For 2 years the ISM have been telling people that the Israeli army is putting these road blocks not as defense against terrorism but the “Ethnically cleanse” the Palestinians and suddenly the American viewer see that American soldiers are forced to do the same. What was even worse for ISM was that unlike the Israeli soldiers who search every Palestinian in the roadblock for explosive the American soldiers just shot whole Iraqi families approaching the roadblock. Suddenly Israel actions are not seen as bad in comparison to America’s own action.

ISM activist started to become more offensive in their attack on Israel – bravely searching to get hit by Israel so that the headline at home would focus on a Western getting hurt by Israel Instead of on Iraqis killed by US soldiers. ISM activists hid Islamic Jihad terrorists in their Jenin office while the IDF (Israel Defense Force) was searching for him. Brian Ivory rushed into a combat between IDF and Islamic Jihad in Jenin to be hit by a Palestinian bullet in the head but the ISM issued PR accusing Israel. This was working so well that The ISM issued a special call for volunteers to come to raffah and indeed it did not took long for Tom H to get shot.

With the war in Iraq over the ISM needed a new fresh idea to remain in the headlines, soon the story of a “Nurve Agent” was used. After all when the world attention is on WMD what better accusation then a Nurve Gas could be leveled against Israel ?

But the ISM is getting exposed: ISM never denounced terrorism, they helped protect the homes of suicide bombers, they incite Palestinians against the US and Israel (remember the Rachel Corrie flag burning photos) ISM accusation that Israel will use the war on Iraq to hurt Palestinians were proven false as are many other ISM claims. Clearly incitement and lies – camouflaged as search for truth and justice – is not a way to bring peace to a troubled region.

Ben, ISM actions have never been a significant part of the news from Israel. Their main effectiveness has been in thwarting the Israeli army directly by putting themselves between the army and the Palestinians. Thus, explaining what happened in terms of news coverage doesn't wash.

The pictures of Rachel before she was killed are not those of someone who is suicidal, forcing the IDF to harm her. She's standing in front of an unmoving bulldozer. Also, she's wearing a bright orange vest.

If this was a matter of the ISM attempting to score propaganda points against the Israelis, the army could easily have thwarted that plan by placing a spotter with a walky-talkie in communication with the bulldozer operator. If they were really intending to demolish the building without injuring the ISM person, they would have forcibly removed Corrie from where she stood before they started the bulldozer.

Your idea that ISM has become more aggressive is flawed. ISM tactics have not changed. On the other hand, IDF incursions into Palestinian areas and destruction of Palestinian homes and cropland have increased. Just check the numbers. They are hard facts.

A more likely explanation for what happened is that the IDF command changed their strategy to become more aggressive against the ISM, who they view as a nuisance. They may have even planned to deliberately kill an ISM member as a means of frightening other ISM members into quitting and going home.

Because the ISM has continued to put their bodies on the line, Israel has changed its policy again and now advocates expelling them.

Just check the ISM mailing list and you will se that it is the ISM who changed tactics. On early March they announce they will focus on raffah in a more direct confrontational way than before.

The ISM knows perfectly well what is going in raffah:

There are explosive smuggling tunnels under the border from Egypt into the Palestinian side of raffh. The tunnels entrances are in civilian homes.

Several warlords who charge a lot of money for using the tunnels control the tunnels. The Hammas warlords place armed snipers to shot at any IDF soldier who is getting close to the tunnels.

If a soldier would attempt to get off his armored vhicle to arrest Rachel Corrie the soldier will be shot by the Hammas warlords sniper team.

This is the reality in raffha - a reality well known to the ISM. They also know that the reason the IDF is building wall is to prevent the explosive smugglers to dig the tunnels under the border fence. The wall actually stretches underground more deep than it is above ground.

I understand your logic but just do not accept it. In Europe Rachel Corie death made headlines and replaced the Iraq headlines. It was also on US press. Basically all your arguments are not founded on reality.

Ask yourself one thing: The ISM team is in raffah for months now. Have you ever ONCE in all their reports (mailing list of Kristen Ess radio reports) heard anything about the tunnels under the raffah border? The answer is a resounding NO.

Events Surrounding the Deaths of 2 Men in Tunnels beneath the Block O area



On 14th February, Rafah activists received word that two men were trapped or possibly killed in tunnels beneath the Block O area on the night of 13th February. After witnessing the continued presence of a large machine drilling holes into the ground on the border strip, witnesses also observed ground-shaking underground explosions. Activists concluded that the tunnels had collapsed due to Israeli occupation force anti-tunnel activity.

On 14th February, the activists received an indirect request from the men's families to act as human shields in order for the bodies to be brought from underground safely. These requests were retracted when it was reported that the Palestinian Authority had negotiated with the Israeli army to allow the family to recover the bodies themselves. That night family members reported that five men entered the tunnels in an unsuccessful attempt to recover the bodies, and that one of these men was arrested by the Israeli occupation forces.

16th February, a team of ten men entered the tunnels from holes created at the surfaceby the Israeli military, and were successful in recovering the bodies. They were subsequently all arrested and transported with the bodies by tank to the Israeli-controlled side of the Rafah-Egypt border checkpoint, according to their testimony to ISM activists on 18th February.

The men involved in the recovery of the bodies report that they were slapped and interrogated by IOF officers during their detention, and forced to sit overnight outside the buildings at the border checkpoint, in a circle surrounding the bodies, which they said was difficult, due to the fact that the bodies were in a state of decay. They report finding fragments of a tear-gas canister in the tunnel near the bodies, which they carried out of the tunnel, and which they report were confiscated by the soldiers who detained them. They report that when they found the bodies their skin was discoloured and bubbled, and that their chests were distended. The detainees were released on 17th February, as were the bodies of the two men killed, Zeyad Al Sha'ar and Mohammed Hamed Kishta. Activists in Rafah continue to seek more information about the cause of death of these two men.

I think there is a fourth option. The ISM is trying to prevent the draconian actions of the IDF in destruction of homes without due cause, just because they are in areas where they could be a terminus for tunnels. Did the Israeli government ever present evidence that there was a tunnel entrance in the doctor's house?

Roughly 30 tunnels are found every 2 month.

The Israeli army knows that when they approach a house and get shot at there is a reason why they are being shot at by the warlords.

So the owners of houses along the border are caught between Hamas and the IDF and Rachel Corrie was caught between the IDF and the Doctor's house.

The problem with this scenario is the manner in which the IDF treats all ordinary Palestinians as the enemy, inflicts communal punishment and takes no reponsibility for the property they destroy or the land they confiscate.

The IDF treats all Palestinians as if they are vermin. Where in this scenario is there any consideration of the ordinary Palestinian who wants to live in his or her own homeland undisturbed.

You are painfully conscious of the attacks of Palestinian militants on Israelis but are you conscious the lack of security for millions of Palestinians and at the continuous incursions and chipping away of the land and property of non-Jewish natives of the region.
