Dave Kersting: Hatred of Arabs is possible because of US progressives' silence on Israel
When Israel won its special license to use live ammunition against
stone-throwing children, in 2000 and 2001 - expanding the atrocious freedoms
it established in the First Intifada, which set the stage for the first
"Gulf War" - it set the precedents the US military enjoys today. Actually,
US progressives set those precedents, with their silent support.

it established in the First Intifada, which set the stage for the first
"Gulf War" - it set the precedents the US military enjoys today. Actually,
US progressives set those precedents, with their silent support.
Now we see the new freedom Israel's unprotested precedents have
created, for all sorts of invaders.
This deadly social regression took root in the past two-and-a-half
years, since September 28, 2000, when Ariel Sharon and a thousand Israeli
troops went to the Haram al Sharif, to kick off the surge of state-terrorism
and ethnic-cleansing that has been inflicted on Palestine (and the Arab and
Muslim worlds), without significant US protest, ever since.
As was widely reported at the time, Zionist Israel and its supporters
murdered 84 Palestinian children, between September 2000 and January 2001 -
before the first Israeli child was killed and before the first Palestinian
suicide-bombing. As we all so vividly recall, the "progressives," here in
San Francisco and Marin County, and throughout the US, had no audible
objection.

it established in the First Intifada, which set the stage for the first
"Gulf War" - it set the precedents the US military enjoys today. Actually,
US progressives set those precedents, with their silent support.
"Some people," we were told, "can't let go of the idea of a Jewish
state."
We were not supposed to "divide the movement" by objecting to the
racist violence that "idea" requires.
Many young people don't know that using live ammunition against
demonstrators who throw stones used to be unacceptable, especially when the
stone-throwers are children. In thousands of adult stone-throwing incidents
during Vietnam War protests, only one live-fire response occurred - and that
was a failure of discipline and control, not a systematic policy, like
Israel's. Still, the shootings dominated the news-media for a full week. A
memorial service is held every year, to commemorate the four tragic deaths
that resulted.
The far greater tragedy is that the whole value-system, which used to
discourage such gross brutality, was abandoned by US progressives, as Israel
was given special permission, and plenty of cash, to do whatever is
necessary to maintain its official "Jewish" supremacy in Palestine.
Not long ago, it was understood that, if hideous atrocities occur, the
policies which cause them must be changed.
It was also understood that racist policies are wrong, in themselves,
largely because they always require horrific atrocities.
But that all changed when Israel was granted the privilege of
maintaining official "Jewish" supremacy in Palestine - when every atrocity
required to maintain that supremacy was declared "regrettably" justified by
it.
Another progressive axiom, that racist violence can do no good even
for those who impose it, was also discreetly forgotten, in timid deference
to Zionist demands - and bitter Zionist attacks on dissenters.
Efforts by equal-rights activists, to remind progressives of these
principles, were largely ignored.
Efforts to discuss this problem with progressive leaders were quashed
by obscenities, threats, slander, and violence - without a word of rational
counter-argument. Many of these leaders have since proven to be active
Zionists. Others are just affluent and petulant.
When the upsurge of violence inevitably expanded to Afghanistan and
Iraq, the Zionists in our selective "anti-war movement" still managed to
deflect attention from Israel. "The war," they said (first "the war" on
Afghanistan, later "the war" on Iraq) had nothing to do with Palestine or
Zionism. It was all about capitalist interest in "oil."
Some of us pointed out that Israel's racist conquest in Palestine is
the primary node of Middle East provocation.
We noted that Zionism, with its open demand for "Jewish" supremacy, is
the only interest that absolutely requires the subjugation of Middle East
populations, with the consequent racism we see against the entire Arab and
Muslim worlds.
We pointed out that the international corporations could make more
profit by doing straight-up business with thriving societies, than by
looting decimated wastelands full of bitter enemies.
We explained that oil interests cannot stand up against Zionism, if
even the "anti-war movement" refuses to protest its worst atrocities.
Most important, we said that we simply must protest our own
tax-support for such natural expressions of racism as live ammunition
against civilian demonstrators, without letting complex excuses and
speculation divert us from that primary moral obligation.
We repeatedly pointed out that, in the absence of protest, Israel was
rapidly expanding the historic envelope of permissible horrors. We often
said that, whatever we might have to fear from the troops of corporate
imperialism, those dangers are radically increased by the new
freedom-of-atrocity we are allowing Israel to infuse into the modern
status-quo.
A few people listened, and joined us, but mainly, these pleas were
scorned and censored. The front of bitter opposition to equal-rights/peace
activism was smack in the middle of the "peace movement."
The mass demonstrations against war on Iraq were always doomed to
failure, because the one argument that addresses Israel's main cable of
provocation was discomfiting to Zionists "in the movement," and was thus
deleted. The most effective argument against Middle East hostilities - the
primary need to end Israel's openly racist provocation and destabilization -
the one argument that honors progressive and Constitutional principles
alike - was squelched by Zionist-friendly "anti-war" leadership, including
ANSWER and United for Peace, as well as the Social Justice Center of Marin,
and the MPJC.
Now we see our troops in Iraq, following Israel's lead: decimating
civil institutions, shooting those who take too many photos or throw a
stone - showing the training our military received from Israel, in Jenin and
other parts of Palestine.
As equal-rights activists have been saying every day, since September
2000 (and earlier), the Middle East disaster will continue to worsen, as it
has for fifty-five years, as long as US progressives keep erasing Palestine
from the "anti-war" picture - or as long as US taxpayers continue to finance
Israel's openly declared racist conquest.
On the bright side, the "solution" could not be simpler, just as the
wrong could not be more obvious.
We have to face the reality of Zionist ethnic-supremacy. Ethnic
equality is not radical or revolutionary.
It begins with requiring Israel to reform its racist immigration
policy - Jewish yes, non-Jewish no - the valve of ethnic supremacy on one
side, and continued ethnic crime on the other. It is anti-Constitutional and
anti-progressive to finance policies that violently prevent the Palestinians
from returning to what is left of their homes - with full property,
residence, and citizenship rights.
Peace cannot be won by evading that basic justice - and peace has not
been tried until we demand ethnic justice.
When the horrors become bad enough to induce realism, we will find
that there has never been anything elusive about Middle East peace, except
realism itself.
The sooner we induce ourselves to wake up and get serious about this,
the less horror will be required to make us wake up and get serious.

What the "progressives" must consider is how important THIS issue is compared to all the other issues of concern to "progressives". In other words I am NOT talking about right or worng (for most of them) on this one issue but "consequences".
Sorry Dave, but while the majority of American Jews disapprove of many Israeli actions they will not accept your solution of "no more Israel".
It is as simple as that. If the "progressives" fully polarize the matter, you are either for Palestinian survival OR for Israeli survival, either with us or against us, then "tribal solidarity" will win out and the "progressives" will find themsleves abandoned by the Jews. It's not that they will become "reactionaries", but they'll simply try to handle progressive issues WITHIN their community and amke whatever political deals they need to "externally".
In other words, the anti-progressive forces will simply make the acquiescence and/or support of the Jewsih community against "progressive" causes the "price" of conti nued US support for Israel and the Jewish community will go along (while they try to ammeliorate the effects of these anti-progressive measures just within their own tribal community).

The problem is that progressives have historically neglected this issue allowing it to fester and allowing the US government to do anything it wants in the Middle East. Israel should receive special attention because we here in the US give it an enormous amount of aid in order to allow them to keep robbing and shooting the Palestinians.
They get over 40% of our entire foreign aid package and this year alone got $10 Billion in loan guarantees on top of their $4 Billion dollars we usually give them -- and as many people know, loans to Israel never have to be repaid but are always forgiven so this is actually a gift not a loan.
And the reason Israel's aid is so high and the occupation has been allowed to persist for so long and Israel allowed to carry out terrible atrocities, often without any mention of them in our media, is because of the historic silence of progressives to these injustices.
As an example, in 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon and killed 20,000 people in that summer alone and then remained on in Southern Lebanon for 18 years torturing and murdering the local villagers. There was hardly a peep out of progressives at the time. Most seemed to see this as a non-issue or something -- with notable exceptions like Noam Chomsky who wrote "The Fateful Triangle" in response. It's as though progressives used to accept the mainstream idea that Arabs are less human than others and that Israelis were "victims" and had to be protected.
Fortunately this is changing and more and more progressives are waking up to the horrors that our government has committed against the Arab people on behalf of Israel.

As of right now there have been over 300 Palestinian children murdered by the israeli killing machine (some call it an army).
How dare you go on about suicide bombers targeting old people and children? Tell us, please, how many Israeli children have been killed in the past several months. I can guarantee you it is not over 300.
Just last night another two children were murdered in Gaza. Like the US mainstream media and print media, you like to ignore this aspect, don't you?
There would be no suicide bombers if the US were providing the Palestinians with every weapon known to modern man and more besides. At least then the field of conflict would be equal, unlike one where we have the fourth largest army in the world against a peoples who have neither one.
Talk about honour? It takes a lot of honour, doesn't it, to wipe out another two year old child. That kind of honour the world can do without, thank you.

The Bush middle East policy is whatever Sharon tells him that it should be.
As long as American taxpayers keep paying for the expansionist Israeli government's inhumane policies, things will never change.
It's time that we the taxpayers demand an end to the funding of Israeli state terrorism. Today, Reuters reported that at least 2,034 Palestinians and 737 Israelis have been killed in the conflict that erupted in September 2000.
Of children 13 and under, Israeli Jews kill six times more than the so-called Palestinian terrorists.

Of course, it could be an orchestrated campaign of hate as you suggest or perhaps the resentment could be caused by Israelis stealing their land, moving them into more and more crowded refugee camps, checkpoints where thousands are stopped for hours on end in the desert heat, shooting children in the head, etc, ad nauseam.
I think Israelis have created the resentment against them. I don't believe Palestinians are just some how naturally "anti-Semitic."
Of course there is the other side of the coin as well. Many Israeli children are taught that they have a God-given right to all of the Palestinians' land and some extremists also fantasize about an Eretz Israel stretching from the Nile to the Euphrates.

Your description above is laughable. "Checkpoints where shooting children in the head constantly" or whatever you said is absurd and ridiculous. If Israel was doing what you say, 10,000 palestinians would die each day, not 2, or 0, or 5.
If palestinians would call off their intifada, 0 would die each day, instead of 2, or 5, or 8.
If palestinian leadership and hamas had their way, another 6 million jews would die.
That's why regular palestinians have a hard time. Because of the goals of the islamic radicals. Who are also the palestinian leaders.

Zionists must be excluded from the peace movement. Anyone who pretends to be a peace activist, but is found to be supporting Zionists or Zionist organizations either openly or secretly, must be shunned. Zionists have been persecuting, slurring, and defaming their opponents for years; it is time to stop coddling them.
Jews who are not Zionists should stop letting Zionists frighten them with stories about pogroms and holocausts. Jews are safer and more prosperous than any other American ethnic group, so they should realize that it is counterproductive for them to be paranoid, and that supporting groups like the ADL will only cause resentment.
This charade has gone on long enough. A new peace movement based on justice rather than the needs of Israel must be established.
""Zionists" are anyone who supports the EXISTENCE of Israel."
"Supports" is the key word in your post. Existence is something you realize, or perceive. It is self-evident that Israel exists, so it is intellectually dishonest (or perhaps you have an Atlas complex) to speak of supporting Israel's "existence".
Rather, what you should simply say is: "Zionists are anyone who supports Israel." Aside from the issue of dual-loyalty which that raises, support for Israel also means support for the killing of Rachel Corrie, support for the internment of an entire population in the mass concentration camp know as Gaza, and support for the doctrines of Jewish Supremacism that are the foundation of Israel.
