Tribune Headline Story - Cop probe ordered
No funding has been set aside for the investigation, however, and Vice Mayor Nancy Nadel (Downtown-West Oakland) said she hopes it can be done pro bono. Council President Ignacio De La Fuente (San Antonio-Fruitvale) cast the dissenting vote, arguing that the city should ask its Citizens Police Review Board to do the work and use any money spent on an outside panel to hire in-house investigators.
"Are we going to appoint a new panel for every complaint we get?" De La Fuente asked.

Council votes to investigate

OAKLAND -- Longshoremen, protesters and hundreds of sympathizers outraged by police tactics during an April 7 protest at the Port of Oakland told city officials Tuesday they want an independent investigation, policy changes, and even the firing of Police Chief Richard Word.
Though the City Council's Public Safety Committee took no action, the full council met in closed session after the hearing and voted 7-1 to hire a panel to investigate that day's events.
City Manager Robert Bobb and City Attorney John Russo were directed to come back with recommendations for the panel, which the council hopes to choose at its next meeting May 6.

I used to live in Richmond, VA and know Bob Bobb's reputation well. Big bad Bob Bobb believes the power of government is its own justification. He works for the money, the same as any politician, and dares grin while twisting the shiv in your back. Rather than offer personal identification via specific case information, suffice it to say he's a thief who doesn't care how many elderly people he has to fuck in order to do political favors for big-money cronies. Worst yet, Bob Bobb thinks he's got star potential when the truth of it is he's an enormous, insufferable, pretentious asshole.
In summation: I wouldn't walk across the street to piss on Bob Bobb if he was on fire. He's not to be trusted.

I'm concerned that the City Manager (who has interesting attitudes about police governance, from what I've seen) is going to pick out some old buddies or perhaps police cronies. Does anybody know of "experts on civil rights" or the names of judges that we could lobby for before next Tuesday? There's not much point in an independent panel if it consists of police sympathizers...unfortunately I'm not enough of an Oakland insider to know who to ask for.
There is a really scary report on the status of shooting victim Willow Rosenthal in the Daily Cal. Unfortunately, that newspaper's web site died a few weeks ago and they can't fix it. It showed pictures of a horrible wound on her leg where the skin died from the hematoma caused by the projectile, and she had to have 3-4 inches of dead skin removed and have a skin graft.
