About 20,000 Polish workers have staged a march in Warsaw to protest against government policies which they blame for high unemployment.The Solidarity union organized Friday's march on government headquarters in the capital. The demonstrators demanded measures to cut unemployment, which at nearly 19 percent is at its highest level since the 1989 fall of communist rule in Poland.
Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller's approval ratings sank to new lows this month. Mr. Miller entered office promising to revitalize Poland's economy with post-communist free market reforms. Poland last week signed the accession treaty to enter into the European Union in May, 2004. Poles still have to approve EU membership in a June referendum.
