Maxxam Tree Climbers Arrest Tree-Sitter on Traverse
Heavy Rains Do Not Keep Maxxam Climbers Out of Trees
On Monday, during a drenching downpour, Maxxam/PL climber, Eric Schatz, ascended a "traverse line" to extract yet another tree sitter from one of the few old growth redwood trees still standing in the Freshwater watershed near Eureka. An intense struggle to save the last giants has been going nonstop here for the past month. 41 people, including many tree sitters and supporters, have been arrested so far in the growing protests against Maxxam/PL's destruction of the ancient trees. The timber harvest plan, which calls for clear cutting on very steep slopes, has virtually leveled the landscape and spares no ancient trees.
Luigi had harnessed himself to the traverse, a rope connecting two old growth redwoods, in a last ditch attempt to save them from Maxxam's saws. After setting up and going out on a second traverse line, Schatz apprehended Luigi and restrained him in pain compliance holds as the activist dangled 100 feet above the ground and hauled him back to the tree where two other climbers were waiting. He was then lowered to the ground and arrested by the Humboldt County Sheriff. Maxxam fallers immediately cut five more old growth trees.
"The tree sitter's hands and feet were bound and he was put into some sort of a sling and lowered to the ground," said Kathie Bunnell, a local resident, witnessing a tree sitter being extracted for the first time. " I was deeply moved and have great respect for the courageous and dignified way Luigi handled himself, even when the climbers were cutting large branches above him in the tree."
Local residents and activists have been holding daily vigils along Greenwood Heights Rd. since March 17, to witness the extraction of tree sitters and protest the cutting of the last old growth trees along the road. Although Maxxam/PL had initially closed the road,
claiming they had a permit, local law enforcement and government officials determined the closure was illegal and Greenwood Heights Road has stayed open ever since.
Ignoring both public outcry and scientific analysis showing impacts to the watershed so severe it called for the cessation of logging there, the Regional Water Quality Control Board recently approved a waste discharge requirement waiver for Maxxam/PL. The ruling gave a green light to the company's previously illegal logging, and allowed Maxxam/PL to continue their controversial accelerated rate of cut. The elevated rate of cut, in fact, is the basis of fraud charges in the recent lawsuit filed by District Attorney, Paul Gallegos. The suit claims Maxxam/PL concealed and suppressed critical information about the impacts of cutting on steep slopes, thereby reaping millions in illegal profits.
Maxxam/PL has hired a public relations firm to orchestrate a smear campaign of T.V. and print media ads against the activists, attacking their unbroken record of nonviolent civil disobedience.

I am writing from Nebraska, home of Arbor Day. I believe that is trully atrocious the way that corporations believe that they have the right to destroy some of the Earths`s most magnificent living beings, our magnificent Redwoods! I vehemently protest them and I do not blame the treesitters one bit. I have children and am in Nebraska but after reading how they were treated I have come to the conclusion that I too would be there if it were possible. I have been planning on bringing my children their this summer for two years. I have decided to get some supplies to help these people in their struggle against these disgusting corporations and their empire of evil. Long Live The Redwoods!!!! PeaceLoveLifeLight Human Freedom Living Right
Those trees do not belong to you. Go sit somewhere else.
If the people who want to save trees can break the law, so can the people who want to protect their own property. My advice is to shoot the tree-sitters with tranquilizer guns, then strip off all their clothes, and send them bach, naked, to the fascists at Earth-First. Fuck the defenders of the forest. Fuck anyone who wants to take away the rights of companies to do what they want with their own property.
I agree with this person. This is just inappropriate behavior on the part of the corperuptions. I understand the need to make a buck, but the senseless destruction of living things, a tree, nonetheless the mighty Redwoods, is murder. Leave Our Trees Alone!
We must stand together in the creation and destruction of these trees. They were here before and we should pass them on to future generations to see and cherish just as we do, and should continue to do. No corporation should repress this freedom! Long Live The Redwoods!

My dear children, how can you be so cruel. I have given you the key to the garden and you destroy. I bestow greatness upon you and this is my thanks. How DARE you think you can steal what is not yours! My flock is starving in places, and I let this be known, yet you who call yourself peace lover thinks that evil corporations are the key. This is not true, you see they are the devils advocate, and to speak so despicably upon true warriors of my word, makes you one also. It is not too late! Repent and you too shall bear the gifts of the Glorious Earth. You see I am in many bodies, many forms, one of them was Magnifecent, the tree that was murdered for greed. This is not my wish. When I allowed you on my Earth we had a previous contract that you are to be my steward of the Earth. You agreed to care love respect nurture and honor. Repent or you shall feel my wrath as I felt demon claws digging into my mighty pure body and you stood by and laughed. Shame on you! Repent I Demand or you Will Rue the consequences! Peace and love to all
You are such good evil doers. bravo! Murder greed deception rape keep up the good work. Death to all, to bad God didnt speak up sooner.Oh hey peace lover, I have a special place for you. May you bask in the eternal fires of hell forever. Once again I would like to thank you for being so evil.
If you want to save the trees raise money and buy them that way they would be your property an you could do what ever you want with them.
I ask myself Why many times a day... Why must I always have to clothes to wash, dishes. etc. Why must I constantly be bombarded with bills, etc. I suppose it comes down to the fact that I live, therefore I must deal with it.I can and do, sure I may bitch about it but I do. I am not rich. I am a single mother. How are we who are great people- kind considerate caring, working for something that matters ( I am a nures aide, I care for the sick and debilitated) supposed to buy the land when we can barely afford to feed our kids. I am one paycheck off from homelessness. WHY can`t corporations say ok yes we have a market, we need trees... however THESE trees are special...these are the great Redwoods for Heavens sake. Please I beseech the powes that be take care of these trees before they are gone forever! Long Live The Redwoods
As i sit here in my nice house, reading about this atrocious act of evil ie the destruction of our Redwoods. It saddens me to think of these people who are committing their lives to save them being "brought out of the trees no matter what it takes" and then arrested. I have one question for these lumber companies WHAT ABOUT OUR FUTURE if the forests are all removed what is going to happen to our air. Please think about it.
how can eric schatz lay hands on these people? what authority does he have? does he wear his badge on his climbing harness? if not then maybe people should be suing the pants off of him....thats where the money could come from to buy all those trees up. how could he possibly be justified in even touching these people if they dont want to be touched (let alone putting them into submission holds and dragging them out of trees) when he isnt a "law enforcement" official? i believe in non-violent resistance.....but it seems to me that any (rough) attempt to resist this eric character could be termed as self defense between one individual and another......
As a mother of a tree sitter, I am proud to see the youth of our country with such passionate beliefs and the strength and courage to demonstrate their convictions. Bravo! Keep up the work.
I hear the same old tired yada-yada-yada from you people. Instead of sitting on your dead butts, why don't you stop by and talk with a scientist that works for the lumber companies. Why don't you stop and talk with the scientist that work for CDF, Fish and wildlife, and a few other state and federal agencies. All of you shoot your mouths off without getting all the facts. You listen to the radicals and you take it as gospel. How sad.
hey person who keeps spouting the same ol bs....
you do not know me....i was merely questioning the legality of a person (who does not appear to be a law enforcement officer) violating and endangering others....please dont assume that you understand what i know and do not know, and what i believe and do not believe.....i DO think that its pretty bogus for some random guy to be allowed to manhandle people.......even if some guy were violating YOU i would still think that it was illegal and wrong....if you do not feel the same way, it really doesnt matter to me....

I was reading the comment by B and I have to disagree with this person. For one, the tree sitters were tresspassing in the first place and second, the tree climber was deputized by the Sheriff's department to bring the law breakers down. What is so hard to understand this?
I was there the day eric removed my friend from those trees my partner could not stand to hear luigi's screams while being subjected to pain compliance being administered by men who are not even officers of the law, then i saw the humboldt sheriff's deputy strolling over , my friend said officer that person in the tree being assaulted, the officer smiled at carl anderson, carl smiled back and noded; all this time Luigi was screaming my arm, my arm !!! one climber named ox began chating with activists when asked how he felt about hurting people he replied,
"I love hurting people thats why i love this job"....... o.k. kids i just thought id share the way it was with you peace and jah love!!!!

Ask PALCO hired scientists for factual info?
Not smart, kid.
Those scientists are being paid by the company who wants specific data
and you think that the CDF is any better
none of these agancies are concerned with the vitality and sustainability of the forests
they are concerned with their pocket books only
don't place such blind faith in "scientists", whether they be hired by PL or paid by the government
what do you think the Gallegos lawsuit is all about?... the falsification of data
think for yourself and stop blindly trusting authority

Just take a look at what you just got through saying anti- imperialist. It seems that you are putting your full trust behind Gallegos, but at the same time you are telling me to think for myself and stop blindly trusting authority????
What are you going to say when this goes to trial and Gallegos gets blown out of the water? Not only will he get recalled, but also being remembered as a DA that cost a cash strapped County money without having all the facts.
