AFSCME 2019 Motion Protesting Police Attack on IWU Members and Protesters at the Oakland P

by AFSCME 2019 union member
Text of union motion protesting April 7th police attack at Oakland Port; motion also demands that any charges against protesters and union members be dropped.
Motion Passed by AFSCME Local 2019 at April 15th meeting:

On Monday April 7th Oakland police launched a vicious and premeditated attack on anti-war protesters on the Oakland waterfront using weapons like concussion grenades, rubber bullets and wooden slugs. Fifty demonstrators and nine longshoremen, who were simply waiting to start work, were injured.

AFSCME Local 2019 goes on record protesting this attack and demands that all charges be dropped immediately. We stand in solidarity with the antiwar protesters and with our union brothers and sisters. We will post copies of this at work locations and print it in the union newsletter.

This motion will be sent to Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown, Alameda County DA Thomas Orloff. Copies of this motion will be posted at work locations and sent to ILWU Local 10, the Alameda County Central Labor Council, the Oakland Tribune and posted on Indymedia.

I was at the meeting where the motion was passed. The motion printed here was not the motion I understood we were voting on.

The concern at the meeting was the police sweaping up union members who worked at the port along with anti-war demonstrators. Concern was expressed over the use of crowd control devices and the injuries they caused.

Concern was expressed over the possible actions of the Oakland police in a situation where our union might be conducting picketing. Please keep in mind that that no one during the discussion claimed that the anti-war demonstriation was sanctioned by any union organization.

There was no discussion about the Iraqi conflict among the handful of members in attendance. The vote in no way should be taken as a vote against the conflict.
