Palestinians say Clinton signed amnesty for Abbas

by Jenny Lipton
The Palestinian Authority has launched a campaign for the release of a Palestinian terrorist captured in Iraq.
PA Local Authorities Minister Saeb Erekat said the arrest of Abul Abbas, head of the Palestine Liberation Front, violates the 1995 accord with Israel that granted amnesty for all Palestinian insurgents. Erekat said the agreement was also signed by then-President Bill Clinton.

"The Palestinian-Israeli interim agreement signed on September 28, 1995 stated that members of the Palestine Liberation Organization must not be detained or tried for matters they committed before the Oslo peace accord of September 13, 1993," Erekat said. "This interim agreement was signed on the U.S. side by President Clinton and his secretary of state, Warren Christopher."

The PA said the U.S. capture of Mohammed Abul Abbas was illegal and that he had never been sought by American authorities, Middle East Newsline reported. Officials asserted that the State Department had determined in the late 1990s that it did not have grounds to seek Abul Abbas's extradition from the Gaza Strip. PA officials said Israel had not sought the extradition of Abul Abbas during his stay in the Gaza Strip in 1998. They cited a determination by Attorney General Elyakim Rubinstein that Abbas does not pose a threat to Israeli security.

The United States has denied that Abul Abbas was granted immunity from prosecution. U.S. officials did say that the State Department was examining options regarding the PLF leader. So far, they said, the State Department has contacted Italy, which issued a warrant for his arrest.

"We are currently looking at a variety of options to ensure he's brought to justice," State Department deputy spokesman Philip Reeker said. "The United States believes that all terrorists should be brought to justice for their crimes, so obviously, this will be a matter of discussion with the government of Italy."

Its funny that the PLO is saying the US is violating the Oslo Accords when they violate it practically every day. I don't remember any killing of infants in their beds being allowed by Oslo.

If the PLO doesn't honor their agreements why should anyone else?

Israel recently granted Abbas a permit to attend Legislative meetings in the West Bank. If he's such a big terrorist, why didn't Israel view him as a threat? Why didn't they arrest him? Because he had immunity and even Israel could figure that one out.

This is a non news event inflated by the White House in its desperation to make up for letting Saddam and 60,000 Republican Guard vanish into thin air.

Ye'ah, just like when some two-bit member of bin Laden's group (supposedly) was arrested in Pakistan recently. The White House told us he was a mastermind of 11 September. We are still laughing. The reporters on the ground had different views of a virtual unknown, but it sounds good, doesn't it, when the US was looking for reasons to attack Iraq. One would almost believe the desert was populated with bin ladens.

I will say one thing about this current US administration. They lie so well!

The Oslo accord is irrelevent because it had nothing to do with Italy, where the crime took place and therefore where Abbas was convicted. Israel forgives Abbas? This is still totally irrelevent. If an American citizens of Japanese descent is killed in Italian territory Japan could forgive the perpertrator as much as they want, but they don't have no right to stop persecution for the crime which was of an American, in Italian territory.

As pointed out above, the PLO hasn't exactly stuck to the Oslo accords, to put it mildly, so it's an interesting assumption on their part that anyone else would. Aside from that though, there's nothing that allows this thug amnesty from what happened on the Achille Lauro. Palestinians have a long way to go in getting over their own sense of entitlement and victimhood before they can be taken seriously.
