4/19Forum On AFL-CIO, Corruption& ULLICO

by Bay Area Workers Democracy Network (carltv214 [at] aol.com/sfactive [at] earthlink.net)
The BAWDN will focus on the growing corruption scandal within the AFL-CIO. A union controlled insurance company called ULLICO has been allowed by top officials of the AFL-CIO to make millions of dollars off of insider trading on Global Crossing Stock. What does this corruption mean for working people and what can we do about it will be some of the questions addressed in this forum
Bay Area Workers Democracy Network Forum

Corruption, The AFL-CIO &
The ULLICO Crisis

Speakers, Video, Discussion

The ongoing corruption scandal at the Union Labor Life Insurance Company has exposed a growing and systemic problem within the AFL-CIO. This is the biggest financial scandal in the history of the AFL-CIO. Top AFL-CIO officials have made millions of dollars off of insider trading at the union controlled company. Everyone on the board of ULLICO including AFL-CIO president John Sweeney voted in favor of this insider trading yet Sweeney and his cohorts are seeking to confine the corruption charges to those who personally benefited. This corruption crisis has exposed the raw face of "business unionism". It also illuminates the financial crisis within the AFL-CIO. Millions of unionized workers have lost their jobs in the past two years and the AFL-CIO has been totally paralyzed in the face of this devastating economic crisis.
This growing scandal also takes place at the same time that the AFL-CIO has lined up in favor of Bush's war on Iraq and in a period of the sharpest political attacks on labor in the post war period. Bush is seeking to privatize 850,000 federal workers and create a "union free" environment in every state in the union.
Join this important forum to learn about the causes of this corruption crisis and what working people can do to build democratic unions that defend not only the members of labor but the principles of democratic unionism.
We will also show a video on the national protest held against ULLICO and the AFL-CIO leadership on March 3, 2003.

The Bay Area Workers Democracy Network is a rank and file democratic committee that seeks to build a democratic trade union movement with one person, one vote, an end to labor-management collaboration and for a democratic political party of working people. We also see the struggle of workers in the US linked up to the struggle of workers throughout the world. We are part of the Labor Action Coalition (LAC) http://www.laboractioncoalition.org
