SF deconstructing Bush under his radar

by Andrew Kay Liberman (teachins1 [at] stopuswars.org)
stop the Bush war(s) with local action, thinking globally--going on 26 free Coffee House Teach-Ins <http://www.stopUSwars.org>
Thursday night's THIRD successful Coffee House Teach-In in the Bay Area--the 26th overall from the LA based non-profit Coffee House Teach-Ins (CHTI) <http://www.stopUSwars.org>,
was a terrific success. Highlights: standing room only at the lower San Francisco Haight district's Cafe International outdoor venue. CHTI was invited back for just before the next called for May 10 mass anti-war demo for SF. "Its' the vibe", said owner Robert, as to why he liked the night.

Jeff Patterson, of Refuse and Resist and NION, and a Gulf War veteran, told the story of his life as one who refused to board the plane to Saudi Arabia, and the abuse he took from fellow marines. His audience of
mostly very young direct action oriented politicos listened atentively as they may face the fate of induction with Bush's threats for more wars.

Joel Frangquist offered an overview of successes and failures of direct action in The City, and suggested focusing direct actions on making the connection between reducing auto use and the US addiction to oil. "People are stopped in traffic in their cars not understanding why {we} might be blocking the streets", said Frangquist. "There is a disconnect. When blacks sat in at lunch counters in the South, civil disobedience and direct action was logical. Sometimes people don't make the connection here, and that is our challenge", argued Frangquist.

Tom Rodderow chimed in again with his usual original and creative anti-war music.

The next scheduled Coffee House Teach-In is set for the Horseshoe Coffee House, 566 Haight, also on the lower Haight at Fillmore--Friday, May 9, at 7:30 pm. RSVP: 1-877-stopUSwars. Contact Rachel for local contact through <teachins1 [at] yahoo.com>. Focus will be on Food Not Bombs, Critical Mass, alternative fuels, and more, put together by the Dead Goats for Peace affinity group. Musicians, poets, speakers invited--contact above asap.

Last Saturday's SF teach-in, this one at City Blend in the Mission District, was a further success, with a
representative from SF Green Supervisor's office
speaking, Alison Wier, from "If Only Americans Knew",
Meddle, from Direct Action, Jeff Grubler, from the
Ronald Reagan Home for the Criminally Insane, and
great music from Tom Rudderow and from Daniel Zwickel.
This stop the war teach-in was after the Oakland march
& mass rally, which was itself highlighted by the
speeches from Rep. Barbara Lee & Harry Belafonte.

Thank you to the Bay Area United Against the War (BAUAW), which has endorsed the work of Coffee House Teach-Ins.

Friday night, a spirited crowd was in attendance at
Cafe Macando, in the Mission District, for the 1st.
Coffee House Teach-In in the Bay Area. After a
presentation by Toni Mendicino, of Radical Women, by
Carole Seligman, of Socialist Viewpoint Magazine & a
founder of Bay Area United Against the War, and poetry
from Nellie Wong--a lively debate opened up under the
guidance of LA psychotherapist
Kathleen McTaggert as an x-marine and other supporters
of the war came with questions. Discussions went on
until 11 pm. Thanks to Maria Cristina for welcoming
Coffee House Teach-Ins to her coffee house, Cafe
Macando.
