''Loose lips sink ships'' dept: NPR lets Baghdad statue fraud cat out of the bag

by extracted from National Pentagon Radio
The "happy, joyful Iraqis" in the crowd that pulled down the Saddam statue were in fact US Marines.
The "happy, joyful Iraqis" in the crowd that pulled down the Saddam statue were in fact US Marines.

Jeremy Whitworth is a US Marine in Baghdad. This morning, National Pentagon Radio's Andy Kaufmann spoke with Jeremy Whitworth's mother who described her son's telephone call to her yesterday. Jeremy told his mother to watch CNN and watch him wave to her from the crowd full of Marines waiting to take down the Saddam statue.

...please try to facilitate the research and efforts of your compatriots. If you hear something on a specific NPR show, make a mental note of what show (Morning Edition, etc.) it was, go over to the website, and try to find the real audio file. It's easy to do, and it lends credibility to what you quote (lots of crap posted on the internet, after all), while also enabling researchers and other journalists to use the material with greater speed and impact.

I realize the above is an ideal - and that it can't always be done. But if we all seek to rise to a higher ideal, we'll all be more efficient and have greater impact.

Thanks,

I suspect I found the segment, but I can't listen to it because NPR changed their formatting (long story about my system). If anyone can record the stream into an mp3 and post it, that would be great.

Marines Call Home

Listen to Morning Edition audio

Apr. 10, 2003

NPR's Wendy Kaufman talks to the parents of some of the U.S. Marines who've been involved in the fighting in Iraq. Lance Cpl. Jeremy Whitworth called his folks on the phone Wednesday and told them to look for him in the television news coverage of the Baghdad celebrations.

what is all this about? So some Marines are in Baghdad. That's no secret.

They were watching the statute fall. that's no secret.

Is this one line trying to say the Marines all put on 40 pounds and wore fake mustaces? Am I missing something?

Also, why is everyone so upset about this statute? Statutes are always pulled down when dictators fall. It got pulled down. Marines hooked up a M88 tank retreiver and with some Iraqis pulled it down. Big deal. How does this hurt so many egos that complicatd conspiracy theories have to be hatched?

the downing of the Hussein statue is purported to be conclusive evidence that the Iraqi's are on-board with the US. taking a wider-view is helpful.
