One person, one candle, and silence.

Mourning for the victims of aggression.
Meditating and praying for peace.
Keeping vigil on an unresponsive federal government.

The Bay Area Tikkun Community has organized a continuous vigilant presence for the duration of the unjust and illegal war on Iraq. Beginning at noon on Tuesday, April 8, rotating teams of individuals will make a powerful yet non-confrontational statement against the Bush administration’s perversion of our democratic ideals by fear-based mentality used to justify its policies of aggression and the principal of domination by might rather than right.

While allowing for individuals to connect with a place of inner peace during a hostile time, this vigil hopes to raise awareness of the “cynical realism” that unconsciously drives so many of our actions, and thereby begin the healing and transformation to a world based on compassion, understanding and acceptance.

Families, individuals and volunteers from groups such as the Tikkun Community, United for Peace and Justice, Code Pink and Veterans for Peace have committed to maintain a continuous vigil, throughout the day and night meditating and praying for peace in their own personal manner. This peaceful protest will take place directly in front of the Federal Building located at the United Nations Plaza at 450 Golden Gate Avenue in San Francisco. It will end only when the internationally-denounced fighting in Iraq ends. There will be information nearby regarding this stand for peace and the Tikkun Community.

Volunteers still needed!
To volunteer please email vigil [at] resourcedecisions.net and provide your name, email and phone number and the dates and time(s) you can be available to either sit or support. Indicate if you are a pair or an individual and if you can take a recurring time slot. Ideally, people can volunteer in pairs, but if you can’t find a partner we will pair people up. After you contact us, we reply and confirm a specific time you will be needed and provide further details. If you or your group can commit to multiple times or a regular time daily or weekly that will help us tremendously in having an uninterrupted vigil. Night times are especially helpful and appreciated.

About the Tikkun Community
Tikkun is a multi-ethnic, interfaith organization of people committed to building a world of kindness, generosity, and love. We know that involves a transformation of American economic and political institutions. But it first involves a transformation of the heart-a willingness to transcend the cynical realism that dominates public discourse and to affirm our highest visions for a world of peace, justice and ecological sanity. Most people on this planet hunger for a more loving and caring world in which each of us is recognized as fundamentally valuable.Yet most of us are scared to even acknowledge to ourselves that we still want that world-fearful that we will just be setting ourselves up for disappointment or disillusionment. The Tikkun Community is an organization trying to create the safety and confidence for people to go for their highest ideals.
