Madonna give up

by protesta (protesta [at] wol.be)
She has decided to stop the diffusion of the violent, anti-war video for "American Life". out of respect for the troops fighting in Iraq.
We can read this statement on his website: "I have decided not to release my new video. It was filmed before the war started and I do not believe it is appropriate to air it at this time. Due to the volatile state of the world and out of sensitivity and respect to the armed forces, who I support and pray for, I do not want to risk offending anyone who might misinterpret the meaning of this video." It seems that the "catastrophic repercussions and horror of war" she wanted to describe (see http://www.futureworldfunk.be/info030211.htm) has disapeard when it started. Shame on you Madonna.

She wasn't much to begin with. The best you could ever say for her was that she was a trouper with razor-sharp management. (But then, so is a trained seal.)

But what interests me far more than Madonna is the phenomen wherein war is its own justification. We face all the frustrations that we do, because somehow the rulers have pulled off the really slick trick of making any war justifiable because it exists.

The reasoning is that, once the war starts and US troops are in danger, we have to support the war, not just tacitly but enthusiastically. It's not enough to say that you wish to see our troops home safe and well. No, you have to join the cheering section, because after all, this is war.

Never again does any president have to listen to anyone. They just have to start the war, and the media do the rest.

But it's bogus. It's one of those post-modern simulatory constructs that makes perfect intuitive sense until dragged out in the daylight and subjected to a rational examination. In this case, the insistence that everyone wholeheartedly support a war because there is a war on makes every bit as much sense as wholeheartedly supporting the worst migraine of your life because after all there must be a reason for it, and heaven forbid you would want to negatively affect the outcome of your migraine by taking your medicine for it.

Getting back to Madonna, she has given me more than one migraine.
