I am not a graphic designer, as you might be able to tell by looking at the above samples of some posters that I have made in opposition to this war. But I do think that the above signs serve as good-enough examples of more effective use of images and posters. I made the signs with the following criteria in mind:

- Convey a specific and message that says why I think this war should be opposed
- Be visually interesting with plenty of white space, so as to attract photographers and to stand out in a sea of posters and signs

Clear, simple, symbolic and large posters are effective tools at getting our message across. We should make it impossible for a photograph to be taken at any of our protests without having our specific messages conveyed. This requires that we adopt a disciplined approach to our posters, signs, cloths, locations, chants and everything over aspect of our protests.

HOW TO MAKE EFFECTIVE 24 X 36 POSTERS:
I have found that the best way to make effective posters is to start with an 8.5 X 11 print out. I make my own posters on In Design, but it is just as effective to use a word processor (such as MS Word). If you don’t have Photoshop or another photo program, you can print pictures off of the Internet and then use a copier to enlarge them. Tape these to your 8.5 X 11 print with the words of your sign. Then you can enlarge the 8.5 X 11 print using a banner maker at copy shop (such as Kinko’s). Start by enlarging as much as you can onto an 11 X 17 sheet using the regular copiers (be sure to trim the 1 inch that won’t enlarge – this part will be grayish and will not look good for the final poster). Then ask for help (or do it yourself) to use the banner to enlarge the 11 X 17 to 24 X 36. I use 200% enlargement, so I suggest you tell the employee that you want 200%. Then get a 24 X 36 foam-mount board from an office supply or (perhaps) art supply store. You can easily tape your poster to the foam-mount board. Double-sided signs are a lot more effective. Estimated cost per sign: About $6.
