US Marine Conscientious Objector to Speak at Forum

by Wendy (uhurureparations [at] yahoo.com)
Stephen Funk, US Marine Conscientious Objector will make a statement in solidarity with the peace movement at forum, "Where is the Peace Movement Going?"
Where is the Peace Movement Going? A Forum on Peace and Social Justice SPECIAL HONORED GUEST- Stephen Funk - U.S. Marine Conscientious Objector Tuesday, APRIL 8TH 2003 7-10PM Fellowship Hall 390-27th St. Oakland 510-625-1106 reparations_sfbay@yahoo.com $5-25 dollar donation requested leaflet: http://www.geocities.com/thew94610/peacemovement.pdf Invited Orgs and Individuals: Omali Yeshitela, Chairman of the African People s Socialist Party International A.N.S.W.E.R Quetzaoceloaciua, Barrio Defense Committee Angelica Cabande, Filipinos for Global Justice, Not War Global Exchange Noura Erakat, Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee Penny Hess, African People s Solidarity Committee Direct Action to Stop the War People s Non Violence Response Coalition Dear Peace Activists, With the U.S. declaration of war against Iraq and the blanket "war on terrorism" threatening the livelihood of the world s people, we believe we must address essential questions about the nature of the anti-war movement we are building. A division has surfaced in the anti-war movement nationwide which has raised grave questions for some people: Is there room for Africans, Asians, Arabs, Indians, Mexicans and other non-white people in the peace movement? Is there room for the issues that impact on their lives that go beyond the questions of pacifism, supporting U.S. troops, and patriotism? Are we willing to acknowledge the war on oppressed Peoples within the borders of the United States at the same time that we seek to stop the war in Iraq? We believe that these questions must be addressed if we are to build a truly inclusive and effective anti-war movement in this country. We believe genuine peace will only come as a consequence of justice and freedom for the peoples of the world. We believe the economic and poltical situation we exist in today constitutes a global slave plantation, in which most of the human family is colonized, brutalized and terrorized so that their resources and labor go to benefit the few. No peace can exist under these conditions. We hope you will join us on Tuesday April 8th to discuss there critical issues in the context of our struggle. Let us build a peace movement that can not only stop the war in Iraq, but ensure peace for all people for all time. Uhuru Means Freedom! I saw this guy on Fox. He's a real navel-gazer.

Don't waste too much time with him.

I'm surprised to see that the so-called United Front wasn't listed as a sponsoring organization. They've been doing lots of events with Uhuru and BDC at the Humanist Hall in the last year and a half.

What happened, did the leaders of the Front decide to leave town, or are the groups listed (minus a few like GX and DASW) what theoretically makes up the "United" Front?

weird. Fox news seems to have a policy of searching out people from the Berkeley area who are not journalists or professional commentators, but rather ground-level protesters or random people who might have gotten their name in the newspaper in a quotation, and asking them to represent the entire 'left' or liberal position against a professional right-wing talking head. For a while, they talked about the reparations issue nearly every day, even though liberal leaders such as people in congress hardly have made this a prominent issue in their agenda at all. meanwhile, they give zero time to top 'liberal' issues such as environment or class/economics topics.

It is a sad day in American history when a Marine -- who fully knew what he was getting into before he enlisted -- abandons his sworn duty to defend his country. Stephen will end up regretting his decision -- maybe not today, or within a year -- but in a few years when he realizes the consequences of his actions. However you feel about this war, Mr. Funk lifted his right hand, and swore to protect this country. He is a coward. It's that simple.

It's all the soldiers who are going to this needless, imperial war in Iraq who are derelict in their duty, by endangering their country. Mr. Funk is no coward - he is courageous for taking a stand, risking significant jail time.

what are you talking about anarquista? the uhuru movement hasn't been in any co-sponsored events with "the united front."

people's non-violence response coalition and intl. a.n.s.w.e.r. have both declined participation on the program.

a.n.s.w.e.r., after two weeks of unreturned calls and emails finally called us a few days ago to say their organization -- with dozens of day-to-day activists and organizers -- had a "meeting that night" and couldn't make it.

peoples non-violence response coalition responded with the following email:
"The Peoples NonViolent Response Coalition has decided to decline your invitation to participate in Tuesday's Forum.  We would appreciate it if you would remove our name from the flier.  Thank you in advance for respecting our decision.  -- Jackie Cabasso, Chair, Coordinating Committee, Peoples NonViolent Response Coalition"

the flyer clearly states "invited speakers." letting the people know who will and will not accept an invitation for such an event is part of the politial point of the event itself. their name stays on the flyer.

no peace on the slave plantation!

whats your problem? you cant come up with any criticism that's more concrete than calling saturday's demonstration "lame" and putting harry belafonte in a box, calling him an "aged actor and singer."
its great that you are part of a movement that ensures that we don't lose sight of the atrocities here at home, in our cities, schools and streets, while our nation is focused on our administration's murders abroad. keep doing your work, please, it's important...but you don't need to be so divisive...you wouldnt have planned saturdays demonstration to be the way it was, fine. but "pathetic and lame?" come on...
be nice. no one wants to join forces with an asshole.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
