Casualties WALK Monday 3/31 AM

by Andrew Rose (andrewnewkirkrose [at] yahoo.com)
About 40 people this morning around
7AM put on white face paint and walked in
double file around downtown in about 5 seperate
groups. We each had an individualized sign that
said Collateral Damage # 23, killed in Basra, on
3/28/03 or whatever. This was put together by
an affinity group called greenies4peace, I believe.
tactic note: the ferry building disgourges passengers by the boat load between 8AM and 9AM, there
are lots of people around Justin Herman plaza before
corporate work hour (around 9.30) so no need to
venture to far for the morning action if that's the folks
you want to be seen by.

I met with about 40 people this morning around
7AM and we put on white face paint and walked in
double file around downtown in about 5 seperate
groups. We each had an individualized sign that
said Collateral Damage # 23, killed in Basra, on
3/28/03 or whatever. There were signs representing 'coalition forces' and signs for Iraqi people. This was put together by
an affinity group loosely connected with greenpeace.
it was cool. We were attacked 3 times, twice
physically. One dude bolted down the middle through
our group. Another dude pushed the last person in the
line as we went past. A third (all older white men)
said "you people are idiots, you people are idiots"
safety in numbers I guess. Lots of peace signs from
friendly folks also.

Since my first reaction is to flip the mean people off and start yelling at them I'm realizing how difficult it is to be compassionate towards them. For real. Harldy seems worth the effort. Trying though.

There was one pro-Bush group carrying a US flag,
about 4 young male adults and some women and
a car load of kids. We acknowledged each other without any words exchanged.

Action will repeat at lunchtime and evening commute
time.

Good idea. My Grumpy Old Men in the Balcony crit (of those in the video) would be 1) spread out a tiny bit more; 2) walk more slowly (or more quickly) than surrounding foot traffic.

Good work, though.

I was also part of this action, starting at 7am. Our group of eight walked peacefully and solemnly through downtown SF. We received NO argumentative reactions whatsoever. Most often, we received silent stares or those who tried not to make eye contact, but read the placards as they went to work.

It was a beautiful action during such brutal times. Highly effective, meaningful, poetic and honest.

Great action! I talked to some people who couldnt participate who said they really wanted to; that bringing the dead and wounded of Iraq into the well fed, well heeled crowds of the Financial/shopping district was something they wanted to participate in. i would anticipate a large turnout if this was planned again.

I joined the lunch time demo with my sister and my son. I thought this was a great idea, I did hope for a bigger group though. I thought it was very moving to remember the people who have died in this greedy war that way.

We did get some negative comments though, I was almost afraid for my sons safety. The pro war folk are a crazy, scary group... Most of the negative comments we did get were pretty dumb.

I hope there is a bigger turn out next time.
It takes a great deal of courage to fight for peace. I asked a technician of what he knows about this war in Iraq. He basically repeated the exact propaganda messages that the Republicans has poisoned the public with... that Iraq is about to attack the U.S. with weapons of mass destruction... and that war is the only solution to get rid of Saddam. When I asked him if he knows of the history of which nations supported Saddam and provided him with weapons of mass destruction in the past decades, he had no clue. He really thinks that after this war in Iraq, the world will be safer.... I am using this as an example to illustrate how the U.S. media has blindfolded the public with lies and half-truths.
Wake them up with the truths, but be careful out there protesting !
(And gotta to do something about the propaganda and the strong-arm-tactics by Clear Channel Communications!)

Thank you!!!
Guerilla theater is a powerful thing. Congratulations and so many thanks :)
On compassion... "it's the people who do not smile back that need your smile the most"
America the beautiful; founded on principles of diversity and equality.... the folks who forget to see this... the folks who cannot see PEOPLE carrying signs and a message of unity and peace, only a political action that they must STRIKE against... those are the people that need the most kindness... to perhaps nurse them back to their innately humane states. Remember, the next time you are attacked, either verbally or physically.. to keep your ideals at heart and, after a deep breath... repeat to yourself "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" -Gandhi :) You actions have the power to heal... a power so great :) and so very needed. Don't let them pull you away from that :) Greet them with an OPEN hand... it's guaranteed to suprise them every time :)
I cannot thank you enough :) You have made my day! Keep on spreading the love :) We can do it! United we stand.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
