L.A. Anarchist banned from flying
Anarchist Gary Rumor was banned from flying to the Bay Area this weekend to attend the Anarchist Book Fair and Conference.
Due to heightened security measures of the "Code Orange" level of government repression, Gary Rumor was banned by Southwest Airlines from flying to the Bay Area this past weekend to attend the SF Anarchist Book Fair and the Anarchist Conference, where he was scheduled to lead a workshop.
This was not because of any warrants or arrests. He was detained at the airport for 12 hours because of his political viewpoints. No arrest was made, and he was released too late to arrange alternative travel arrangements. He was not informed about being on any no-fly list before arriving at the airport, and was not permitted to leave once he checked in.
Anti-war and other activists has often recently found their names on a no-fly list when they attempt to travel. Airlines will not tell them why they are on the list or who in fact creates those lists. As far as I know, there is no way to know if you're on the list until you check in for a flight, and at that point you're detained. Often, activists have only been held for a couple of hours, just enough time for them to miss their flights.
Unfortunately, this isn't something you can plan to avoid, unless you eschew air travel completely. Just be aware that this could happen to anyone, even if she or he has a clean record and/or does not participate in militant street activity.

It's bad for the environment anyway. Help Ashcroft bankrupt the airlines.
"proud to be an american, where at least i know i'm free."
... if i hear that fucking song again.
rewrite it to:
"sad to be an american, where freedom's turned into fascism."
i knew these procedures would be turned onto american citizens. that's the whole point. freedom of association for me, but not for thee. and the government keeps proving it again and again.
i like to hear all the right wingers make excuses for their head long plunge towards fascism. "this is a wartime situation. terrorists could strike at any moment." bullshit, you fear addled fascists. if these procedures really worked, we sure as hell wouldn't be hearing about AMERICAN CITIZENS with dissenting views being prevented from associating.
but of course, you WANT american citizens with dissenting views to not be able to associate, because you ARE fascists. you can't STAND their dissention, because you live in a world of fear-based fascism. you couldn't make a distinction between an american citizen taking advantage of the freedoms he thought he still had as an american (until he ended up on some "list"), and a real live terrorist if you tried. and this law and the people it's affecting is a perfect example of it.
it's not excusable. it is is the epitomy of what america used to fight against.

Another good reason not to fly. Why patronize the corporate airlines? Too much... Too many... Take the train. Take the bus. Hitchhike. Walk. See the world. Slow down.
The story is incorrect. I could not fly for personal reasons that may be related to the Flight bans only incidentaly. This is not an appropriate issue for a civil rights issue. Please do not take this any further. My political Ideals and activism had nothing to do with why I could not fly in this case.

This sounds too much like one of the short few-sentence disruption posts. Can someone please confirm whether this was really posted by the person so affected?
Is there any other confirmation of any other activists being detained on a no-fly list?
Thanks, we really need to know accurately what's up right now.

This is getting weird.
