Thanks to Cops & Blocs
Considering the potential violence, our local reps from the radical fringes - cops and black blocs - behaved very well.
Letter to the Editor and to the people of the Bay Area,
I am one of the more than 100 self-initiated organizers of Direct Action To Stop the War. In particular I worked to develop an Artists Coalition Against the War, encouraging artists to participate creatively in stopping business as usual the day after the war began, focusing on disrupting businesses that directly profit from the war, and on government sites including the Federal Building and the UK Consulate. This wildly successful action was reported all over the world as a historically significant popular uprising against an unjust US unilateral invasion.
There has been a lot of attention on the costs of our actions, especially in police overtime, and there has been an assertive response from the peace activist community criticizing the police for excessive arrests and brutality.
I want to thank the two most extreme communities who participated in the actions, the cops and the black bloc. Although there are always a few ‘troublemakers’ in each crew, they both performed rather calmly last week.
Firstly, I want to thank the police, who behaved non-violently most of the time, especially when compared with the police at any similar peace or anti-globalization actions, from NY to Seattle, from Israel to Iraq, from Brazil to Nigeria. And let’s remember that the one of the most reportable facts of the action was the over 2000 arrests. Yes I saw brutal and unnecessary tackling and hitting of protesters. Yes I saw people penned in and not given their legal right to disperse resulting in massive numbers of arrests which tied up police and sheriff forces for hours. Yes I was held, after being processed, for nearly five hours in the temporary jail of Pier 27, while over 100 police sat around doing absolutely nothing. But the lack of tear gas, pepper spray, broken ribs, rubber bullets, whips, rifles, tanks, stonings, assassinations and hangings illustrate that we are indeed more free to express ourselves here in San Francisco than almost anywhere else, and for that I’m grateful.
And I want to thank the ‘black bloc’ for their complimentary restraint. The bloc is not an organization. It is a temporary tactic and a social phenomenon. Appearing spontaneously on the fringe and at the center of peace and justice movements around the world, the black bloc is comprised primarily of angry and aware youth fulfilling the promise of a generation that has inherited a legacy of betrayal and oppression. When we stop betraying our youth, poisoning the world, killing and enslaving Third world peoples in their name, they will stop trashing our cities. Property damage, compared to similar actions around the world, was minimal last week. Most of the ‘violence’ committed by these riotous clusters of intersection-blocking activists was in response to the excessive force of the SFPD, as these activists bore the brunt of illegal overhead baton strikes and mass arrests. The damage that downtown SF witnessed, in the form of graffiti and throwing news boxes into already-blocked streets, being neither violent nor dangerous, seems mild when compared with the stone throwing, window breaking, fire starting and armed resistance that can emerge from this kind of outrage. The fearlessness and autonomy of the many ‘blocs’ last week was inspiring, even joyful at times.
So thanks to everyone for making these actions safe and effective. As the war continues, and as the dubiously legal regime of George W. continues its greedy and cruel empire building, the protests will continue. Let all those citizens, cops and protesters alike, renew their commitments to non-violence, to witnessing the humanity of both allies and enemies. Peace.

By any means necessary!
This is the most thoughtful, unbias and sane thing I have read here yet.
The liberals are harming the antiwar movement. They seem to believe that we are not in the middle of a fascist repression. It's time to increase radicalization of the movement.
well said.
compared to OPD's reaction to an unpermitted student march through Oakland in early March, i find it hard to really hate SFPD for just being who they are: cops.
we'll see how OPD handles the march on Arpil 5.
blac block: are you game?

I dunno Kieth, i saw Nazi style police state actions by the SFPD and THe Sherriffs Dept.
see:
Heres what happened to Black Bloc on thurs. the 20th at Mission and &th St.
We were wrongfully arrested in San Francisco on Thursday 20 March near Mission and 7th never given a chance to disperse, they surrounded us and attacked us.
They came from all sides swinging their batons into us yelling for us to move, which was stupid since they surrounded us on all sides
At least 12 officers decided to beat many of us after they had pushed us down to the ground. They are sadists living out their violent fantasies, probably from childhood, we are planning on filing charges. I am sore as hell, i feel like i was in a car wreck.
It feels like i have cracked ribs, my jaw hurts, my tongue is swollen, i am limping. We aren't getting overtime for this, much the opposite, we are losing money doing this.

I agree, at 7th and mission I saw some brutal stuff, a rodney king type beating, and several random beatings. Inside pier 27, I saw sherrifs mistreat a woman of about 50-60- they left her face down in cuffs despite her complaints of stomach pains- a cop kicked her before making the arrest. I've been reading that sf style mass arrests- (surrounding protesters, not giving an order to disperse, and arresting and beating people) - have occured in other cities as well, such as chicago and LA. smells like a police state to me.
For all of you who are talking about police brutality, all I have to say is that to my knowledge, the police killed no one. Think of how it would have become if we were in Russia or Israel. The dead would be packing the streets, and they wouldn't be just protesters. Be grateful for the restraint of the police. Sure they are violent sociopaths, but they killed no one and for that we should be grateful.
What have we come to when we thank the cops for only falsely arresting us and for violating our rights to an extent that does not include killing us? This is indeed liberal tripe.
The Constitution is a fraud, meant only for the propertied classes. It does not preserve any right for us at all, as evident from the police actions over the last week and a half. How long will it take before you liberals figure it out?

Was this above piece really written by somebody associated with Direct Action Against the War? Because if it was, then perhaps we should call it Liberal Action Against the War. The ignorance about direct action and the ignorant marginalization of the black bloc has me wondering about this guy's association with DAAW. The black bloc is not a "fringe" element in activist circles--many of the people who engage in black blocs are integral organizers in all types of activism. I'd also like to complain about the ageism in the above post--people who do the black bloc come from all ages, not just young people. I know quite a few older black bloc participants who would take issue with your characterization of the black bloc as comprising young people.
Cut the crap and get back out in the streets!

That's not true! Even if the charges are dismissed, the SFPD glorifies in brutalizing us when we don't do anything! And we shouldn't have to take sick days to protest, because not all of us get paid for sick days. You don't know anything about what's really going on!

Some of you are quick to dismiss this guy as a liberal. Can you read? He claims to be one of over 100 organizers of a decentralized direct action that shut down San Francisco. He can make that claim because we're all leaders of Direct Action to Stop the War. This network of activists, unlike some of you, do not demand ideological obedience to participate, just a commitment to non violent direct action and non-cooperation with the war makers and profiteers. He indicts the cops for illegal hits and unneccessary arrests and compares their actions to cops all over the world who would have been worse. He doesn't marginalize the blac bloc. He acknowledges that the blocs are at the 'center and the fringe' and he accurately describes them as 'primarily' young people. That's not ageism. Name calling (liberal! ageist!) does not build consensus, does not develop critical consciousness, and has absolutely no sense of humor.
