SF Bay Area Supports The Troops (As Individuals) Rally
SF Supports The Troops (As Individuals) Rally -- Justin Herman Plaza (Market & Embarcadero) -- March 28, 11:30 a.m.
San Francisco isn’t just about protest these days. People of all political persuasions are united in one thing… a concern for the U.S. troops serving throughout the world, particularly those in combat
in Iraq. To show this concern, San Francisco’s Justin Herman Plaza, with its picturesque view through the palm trees of the recently renovated historic
Ferry Building, will host a San Francisco Bay Area Supports The Troops rally billed as “non-political, non-partisan and non-street-obstructing.”
Says San Francisco Bay Area resident and rally organizer Reed Benet, “With anti-war protests that have spilled over to block streets and buildings, the
city that I love has been made a mess, and I shudder to imagine how this is being received by our all-volunteer troops in danger in Iraq. Not being
someone to sit back, but not wanting to just be another screeching voice with a polarizing opinion, I hoped that expressing support for our troops,
as individuals, was something we could all unite around.”
Benet is certainly not someone to sit back. He’s an ultra-marathon endurance athlete, former United States Marine Corps infantry officer, a Princeton
undergrad, Harvard MBA, enviro-tech entrepreneur by night, and San Francisco commercial real estate broker by day. “But,” says Benet, “this rally isn’t
about me. Pure and simple, it’s about showing unconditional support for our troops, as individuals. It’s about acknowledging that they made a conscious
and adult decision to serve our country, that they are legally obligated to be wherever they are sent and do whatever they are told to do, including risking life and limb. And, it’s up to the rest of us to peaceably exercise
democracy to directly or indirectly effect the who, what, when, where and how’s of these matters. Any other course of action other than the peaceable exercise of democracy is a slippery slope.”
When asked to reveal his politics, Benet will only say that he looks at the controversy around the war as mostly honest differences of opinion regarding
“what is the forest and what is the trees. For example, for some it’s all about oil or ingrained corporate interests. For some, Saddam is a pocket-Hitler who needs to be stopped immediately. For some, sanctions, inspections, and the authority of the U.N. weren’t given time to work. For some, it’s all about Bush’s ego. For some, we wouldn’t be in this war if
Bush hadn’t ‘stolen’ the Presidential election in Florida. Others blame the Supreme Court for that event. Others look at the Supreme Court’s make-up at
the time as the end-result of nearly a half-century of democratic elections. For some, it’s all part of a ‘white male conspiracy.’ For others, it’s just how things are and that the elusive ‘they’ of the conspiracy theorists are just ‘us.’ For me, sometimes democracy is easy, and sometimes it’s like making sausage. That is, you don’t always want to know, or wish you didn’t know, what’s in sausage.”

The troops are war criminals. Why support?
This sounds like it could be one of those "support our troops, or you support Saddam" rally's.
I would go if you vets for peace was invited.

troops hav a chose to either obey or not to obey orders. I have a friend in the military right now who refused to put on his military uniform last week after the war started...he is refusing to train with a weapon and has applied for CO status.
Support them? Yes...I support them when they shoose not to kill. If not, I do not support them in any way.

in other words, a self-important yuppie scammer.
<“But,” says Benet, “this rally isn’t

yea sure.
<Pure and simple, it’s about showing unconditional support for our troops, as individuals.>
proof that Benet is a prevaricating piece of crap. but definitely a clever piece of crap. supporting the troops unconditionally "as individuals" (how cute) is sure to attract some stupid liberals to this politically vacuous "demonstration."

An article written by you and quoting you. Tell me, how hard was it during your "interview" when you asked yourself, "Is this about me/you?"
There is no way I would ever go against my own conscious for peace and against this war to 'support our troops'. This is right-winged propaganda at its highest level. Sure I can see it now. Thousands out supporting our troops! What a coup for CNN and FOX.
Build and go to anti-war demonstrations and scream "bring our troops home". That is the support that they deserve. Not to die like dogs in the desert because of misguided fools and murderers. These are our brothers and sisters. Stop this war. Bring our troops home!!

i think this is a spoof. pretty funny one, too.
lets all break out the flags, show up dressed in our sunday best, and behave really, really badly!!
that radical Queers will attack freepers with bar darts dipped in HIV blood. Don't believe it. Come on down to the rally. You'll be safe as milk. Promise.
Thinking about all the business people lining the intersections of market street last week cheering at the police for every protester they arrested I thought, "yeah, we should protest their protest!" But on further reflection, I realized, "No, we are a nation of ONE. This in-fighting and bickering only helps one person: Sadam and his Bin Laden buddies!"
I'm calling for people to gather Saturday morning to show our solidarity for the pro-warsters. Dress as finger-down-your-throat patriotic as you possibly can ("Don't mess with Texas" "Try burning this one, asshole!"). Paint your face red-white-and-blue. Bring the most ear piercing "musical" instruments as you can gather - bullhorns, pots and pans, anything electrical that will produce feedback... if we can get the main march singing off-key, american tunes whenever the news cameras show up, we'll be doing our part. Don't learn the words. Ad-lib! "My country 'tis of thee.... sweet land of liberty... um.... kill the iraaaaaajjjjiiiiii's..." Okay, yeah, that's kind of dumb, but we've got days to think of more colorful lyrics. The more disorganized, the better!
Bring the most ridiculous signs you can think of. We had a faux-protest movement planned for getting the public rallied to demand the return of the Statue of Liberty to the French - "Hey, France - come get your crap off our lawn!" (with a picture of the statue). Anything else absurdly patriotic that will put the pro-war scene into the same light would be great. "Gay republicans for u.s. imperialism!" Use your imagination.
On the news this weekend they were reporting on pro-war rallies across the country. They actually said, "New York city had a massive rally that hundreds of people showed up to." What is that shit? We have hundreds of people on every freaking intersection across the whole damn city for ours - and we still are lucky to get news blurbs. If they want to brag about their numbers, let's give them fucking numbers! Rather than the run of the mill "two hundred people amassed for a pro-war rally in San Francisco this weekend, while anti-war protesters rallied across the street," let's dump our shit in their pudding! Show up. Make an ass of their movement. If they get in your face and demand you leave, ask them how dare they question your patriotism! Accuse them of communist ties! They want war so bad, let's fucking give it to them where it will do the most damage - their patriotic pride!
