My entire office closed down on Thursday, March 20, 2003 so that everyone could take part in the protests against the war on Iraq. I bought a disposable camera and my co-worker and I were on the streets of San Francisco from 10:00am to 4:00pm. These pictures document our day and show the protest as we saw it -- at times beautiful and at times sad, but always an American experience, as there is hardly anything more American to let your true voice be heard in spite of strong opposition and social pressure to keep quiet and go with the status quo. From what I saw that day, the protests were entirely peaceful and the only property damange I saw was a couple "NO WAR" slogans spray painted on a couple walls. The level of police presence was unwarranted and seemed to only create tension and a sense of danger where none would have existed otherwise. I saw no overt police brutality, but was hyper aware of their presence and the danger that presented to me, eventhough I was not doing and had no intention of doing anything violent or destructive. I would have gone out another day, but after viewing the disgustingly negative and skewed news reports about the protests on the nightly news, I lost a little heart. No matter how positive the people's message is and no matter how hard they try to get that across in a peaceful and respectful manner, the media will almost always concentrate solely on the negative aspects. I doubt I have to go into my reasons for opposing the war, as anyone who is actually viewing this already has their own reasons and those who support the war seem to be dedicated to remaining deaf and blind to our outcry for justice and peace. Stay strong out there and stay positive.

§Market & 4th Street Protesters Surrounded and Being Arrested
by An American

This was the SFPD M.O. throughout the day, to surround protesters, separating them from the rest of the crowd, systematically arresting them and putting them on the Muni paddy wagons. Notice the protesters are sitting calmly, awaiting their turn to be arrested.
§Journalist Being Arrested?
by An American

As the lady in the jean jacket was being arrested, one of the others awaiting arrest shouted to the crowd that a member of the press was being arrested. I had noticed her before, talking to the sitting protesters and writing down their responses.
§The Troops

Here, the police who had been standing a little ways from this arrest site, (keeping back a crowd that had no intention of rushing the street, or whatever they thought was going to happen), fall into line, presumably to move to a location where they were needed more. How about where some actual crime is taking place?
§Muni Paddy Wagon

The police were loading people onto Muni buses after their arrest. Some people I know who were arrested say that they had to remain on these buses for hours before being taken to Pier 27, where they had to wait several more hours to be processed and released - without access to restrooms.
§New Montgomery Police Parade

This is New Montgomery Street, looking towards Market. I didn\\\'t see any protesters blocking the intersection of Market & New Montgomery, but perhaps they had just been removed, making this line of police vehicles\\\' blocking the street a little more understandable and a little less hypocritical, as it struck me at the time.
§Peace Sign in Plastic Cuffs

Like all those who were arrested, these young ladies are wearing the chic plastic handcuffs of the day. It ocurred to me that these six girls didn\\\'t really require a police barricade or four-to-five police officers to keep an eye on them. One of them flashed me a peace sign, despite her wrist restraints.
§March - Market & 9th

This march went from Market to Van Ness, to California, to Davis and back to Market. It\\\'s huge! Here\\\'s a view looking south-west.

This is the same march, looking south-east.

This is my favorite picture. To voice your opposition to the acts of your goverment is a very American thing to do. You can see City Hall here. The march went right on by without stopping and without incident, much to the surprised of the armoured and readied guards on the City Hall steps.
§Up California Street

Up, up, up! As we went along, we chanted anti-war slogans and tried to get on-lookers to join us, or at least flash a peace sign. I doubt anyone joined in though... I heard people were afraid of us. I have no idea why, everyone was really nice and no one did anything to damage property the whole way.
§Davis/Pine/Market

This is where the march came back to Market. It was a great one, seeming without incident, full of American pride and American empathy. This was a great and moving experience for me... to bad others didn\\\'t see it the same way and our message seems to have been lost under a mound of poor and enflammatory reporting and the cold shoulder of our representatives.

Have you so soon forgotten September 11? The horror of that day and the events that took place? The stench of death in the trade center? Families forever separated? Were these not CIVILIAN CASUALTIES? Do those people not matter anymore? ATTEMPTS TO KEEP OUR COUNTRY FREE FROM SUCH BARBARISM SHOULD BE APPLAUDED, NOT CONDEMNED!

september 11th eh? you should be aware of a couple important facts before you pull that out of the bag:

no major news organization can find a link btwn. the sept.11 attack and saddam hussein. there is more evidence connecting prez. bush to osama than there is evidence connecting osama to saddam. anything else that has been insinuated is just that: suggestion and NOT fact. just because they use the word terrorist does not make it the same. the united states is currently "terrorizing" the same innocent civilians that they claim to be liberating with the war. therefore WE are the terrorists, creating even more anti-american sentiments throughout the world and putting ourselves in even more danger. if you're egocentric view is that our personal safety is most important, you should not realize that the actions of our country in the last week only put the united states more at risk for an outside attack. not to mention putting our own citizens on the front line to be shot down in iraq. even the logic is wrong. hmmm....so we kill people (in iraq and afghanistan) to show that killing people (9-11) is wrong and won't be tolerated. haven't i heard this before? (the death penalty maybe)

please start thinking for yourself and stop regurgitating presidential propoganda. and don't forget: what's popular may not always be right. (((fucking sheep...)))

Furthermore, 9-11 was largely caused and perpetrated by individual citizens of nations that we pissed off by our actions during the first Gulf War. Our unnecessary and imperialistic presence in the region not only angers the people of the region and offends them (since we are treading on their homelands which are sacred to them for both religious and personal reasons), but also destabilizes the region in that it causes an economic and political domino-effect throughout the region, causing further economic crises and political tensions.THAT is what caused 9-11 and this war will only serve to further anger the people of the middle east (and other parts of the world) making us yet again the target of their anger. This war will do more to guarantee more terrorist attacks on US citizens, not protect us against terrorists (especially since there is no link between Saddam and Bin Laden, duh)! The US has a bad habit of having a selective memory, choosing to only focus on what others have done to us, rather than what we do to make others hate us so.
