Largest Civil Disobedience in SF History?

by Will Doherty (wild [at] willdoherty.org)
Does anyone know if the 2200+ arrests for protesting against the war in Iraq constitute the largest civil disobedience in San Francisco history? (Any figures for the Rodney King arrests? Older shipyard or other actions?)

Well there;s always the 1934 general strike that lasted 4 days.

It looks like the police killing of two strikers precipitated the General Strike of 1934 in San Francisco. About 30,000 participated in the General Strike and approximately 400 were arrested almost all of which had cases that were dismissed.

See

and

and on the atrocious reporting of the press at

In May 1992, "hundreds" of people were arrested in San Francisco following the acquittal of police who had beaten Rodney King in Los Angeles.

The Anti-War Protests of 2003 with 2200+ and counting are quite possibly the largest civil disobedience in San Francisco history.

I'll doublecheck the research paper that I wrote on the subject when I get home tonight, but I do not believe there were 2,000 arrests during the week of the Rodney King verdicts, including the day of, after, and a mass arrest in the Castro the following weekend.

There was quite a bit of violence, though, as well as looting and two nights of curfew.
