Why are SF police officers such sickos?
a question for the community
For five days, I have seen articles in the local newspapers saying how "great" the cops are. I keep hearing rich bystanders say that "they are just doing their job."
But I know from being there that this is bullshit. I have seen cops go out of their way to beat people harder, hit them with nightsticks more often than they have to, pull people's hair, smash protest signs that they are confiscating, and then stand there in front of you and laugh about it.
That isn't "doing your job."
Furthermore, I can't comprehend how any normal person can stand there in a military uniform and beat/arrest people for having a political gathering on a sidewalk.
These cops are specifically instructed to push people into the street to arrest them, box innocent people in and beat them and send them to jail, etc.
I see that some officers are actually disobeying police orders when it comes time to beat people. But they are more than willing to go through the motions of boxing people in, arresting people for nonviolent protest, and ultimately defend through silence the brutality of their coworkers.
So "just doing their job"? I don't think so.
If it really came down to that, all things considered, I would find a new goddamn job if I was a person with morals.
All it would take is ONE OFFICER to come forward and shed some light on the BRUTAL and ILLEGAL actions they know about in San Francisco police's handling of these historic protests. But where are they?
If a cop won't come forward and talk publicly about this shit, they aren't just "doing their job." They are supporting a corrupt group of police state CRIMINALS who are breaking the law.

Perhaps it would help if you tried to look inside the mind of a cop. Ask yourself WHY anyone would want to BE a cop.
The answer is not difficult to figure out...you could see the same mind-set at any struck job-site. There are, it has to be said, working-class people who recognize working-class life is "not so great" and who are willing to "move up" on the backs of other workers. They are willing to scab. Some are willing to do even worse.
The scab is usually motivated by economic factors...he (rarely she) scabs because the job pays better than what he would otherwise get, or because he can't find any other job at all or thinks he can't.
Becoming a cop, though, is usually not just about the money...although the money is MUCH better than it ought to be.
So there's a current of "scabiness" about being a cop...yet an even greater attraction is the privilege of using violence against defenceless civilians...the THRILL of fascism.
It's really not much about politics...it's about the JOY that is celebrated in fascist writings of physical triumph and total domination of one person over another. In the worst cases, it has clearly sexual overtones...as when beating female protesters.
And it is all within the context of complete irresponsibility. Once you put on that uniform, you CANNOT be held responsible for what you do: you were "only following your orders" (the German version) or "just doing your job" (the American version).
Working people who join the police begin as SCABS and end as FASCISTS.
They know that they are hated and despised and publicly claim to enjoy the contempt of their enemies. They also drink a LOT...perhaps to numb the realization of what they have become.
The day will certainly come when they will go into exile, fleeing the wrath of an outraged populace. But, you know, I think it will come as a curious kind of relief to them as well. Being a scab and then a fascist takes a lot out of a fellow.

Instead of fueling their addiction to violence and taunting them, and making it worse, maybe we should try to help them get over their problems and join us. Not sure how to do that, but someone knows I bet. Release them from their hate before you "exile" them. Seems more humane than the ridiculously unproductive shit going on now.
"If this was really a police state you'd be dead or really sick from tear gas by now! "
SADDAM FOR MAYOR ?
Remember, they are all bad, we are all good. Either they're with us, or against us. It's a simple mindset. That's how you get along in the movement.
The officers in the SFPD put up with you, the puking and plotzing, but they have a slightly more complex and compassionate mindset.

Of course we all know that the police aren't all bad, some actually support our cause and our "Doing their Job" of course, that job DOES NOT include beating people, especially peaceful protesters. Of course, there are some protesters that are not peaceful, and while I'd prefer that no one gets beat, but the Police may feel they are threatened by these people, and that causes them to react in adverse ways. The SFPD has had a recent history for it's unfair and unjust actions against people, as evidence by the current lawsuit facing the police force. This said, I think they should all watch what they do. If they continue to go through the streets, beating and arresting people, the force will find themselves in a lot more trouble than they already are. Now as for a Police state, as much as we despise the police for their actions, we do not live in a police state at this time. That doesn't mean that we are not heading there, especially with things like the (un)patriot acts, but I hope if we even get close to that point the People will say enough, and will revolt against those who are unjust. They may have the guns, but we have the power.
A few thoughts:
Many support the protests (and the right to protest) but there are a signifcant number of bad apples who have broken things, defecated and puked on the sidewalks and blocked traffic.
The thing these people either fail to realize or disregard is that the people they are inconveniencing are in many cases anti-war.
So what about the anti-war hourly employee who absolutely has to get to work to make ends meet and is delayed hours, thereby costing them income?
What about the anti-war city sanitation workers who have to clean up the excrement, puke and debris left behind by protesters?
What about th cops, who are mostly good in this city btw, who are back on their heels because a few people turn this into a riot?
The bottom line is this: the organizers need to get control of the protesters. There need to be ground rules such as no defecating, puking, littering and stopping traffic or assaulting motorists. This behavior is more likely to alienate sympathizers than cultivate them. I know many who will not participate in protests because they fear being overrun by Black Bloc. You cannot win hearts and minds by antagonising people.

"A murmur of discontent to your neighbour across the fence can lead to your wife being executed. And then, the Government visits your home and makes you pay money for the bullet that killed her.
"They bring your dead wife, they show you how she was tortured before the bullet put her out of her misery. And if you refuse to pay for the bullet that killed her, they simply take more of your family."

Using whatever methods we choose (anonymously calling the media, calling city hall, calling local city politicians, announcing at various city meetings, spray painting), we should communicate to city officials that IF THE COPS CONTINUE TO BRUTALIZE PEACEFUL PROTESTERS--OUR SISTERS AND BROTHERS IN THE STRUGGLE FOR PEACE--AND OTHER INNOCENT VICTIMS, WE WILL (according to our own choosing and self-initiative) COMMIT 'CD/DA' AGAINST CORPORATE PROPERTY--especially plate glass windows!
Maybe if the corporations and the corporate merchants (major department stores, etc) have to suffer the consequences of police brutality against our spiritual sisters and brothers, those corporate officers/managers or department store executive managers will put pressure on the city to stop their gangster cops’ brutal rogue behavior.

I asked one a question the other night about what was going on. I asked him what he thought. He said "I don't think, I just follow orders."
One of the scariest things I've heard in days, methinks. No thinking, just acting. No souls, no hearts, no heads. Yikes!

Speaking as one of the officers who has been there since the beginning, I can honestly say that if we wanted to really stick it to you (pun intended) we could and can do so given half the chance. We have lots of options in our arsenal that we would love to try. So keep taunting us and pushing the limits. You are the one who will look bad in the end.

Cops don't excercise power because they have brains; they excercise power because they have clubs and guns.
*We* have the superior intelligence and morality (that's why we're not cops).
We don't have to take you cops on directly TO ISSUE A CONSEQUENCE. We can escalate our response to police brutality without taking you on directly.
Let's see who cries "uncle" first: us or the corporations and the corporate department store merchants or city officials.
You cops are the ones who will look bad in the end.
(And the more people participate in these marches, the more people--and peaceful victims of your brutality--get to see *first hand* how you cops behave.)
So, keep pushing the limits, Piggy Wiggums.

And by far, the USA is one of the worst so-called "democracies" for having open, political public demonstrations. Sure, there are the examples of extreme regimes like North Korea or islamic Iran where a violent hardline stance is taken against protests.
But I have been to protests in: Argentina, Brazil, Guatemala, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, UK, Greece, Poland, India, Australia, and a handful of other places.
In all these places, you have some people breaking windows or something. But the cops there aren't working for Citicorp or Starbucks. So they don't care THAT much. Ultimately if it gets really out of control they move in. But a few smashed windows? Come on, Americans, grow up! That's not the end of the world.
Fact is: most Americans think they live in a free society. But of almost all "democracies" in the world, they have the most brutal and violent suppression of protests.

I've never understood why the cops around here like to hide behind their helmets, their padding, and their batons to "subdue" peaceful protests.
I guess it's probably just because I'm from Houston, where I've *never* seen cops wear anything other than bicycle or motorcycle helmets.
There's just a huge difference between the little boys of San Francisco and the *men* in blue of H-town who have earned the respect of the populace through their good humor and helpfulness, and who don't hide behind body armor, pepper spray, and trumped-up b.s. (pardon my language) charges. If someone's doing wrong, they step in and regulate. Otherwise, they leave them be. It's a good model to follow and one which everyone appreciates down there. But I guess maybe your dot-com server crashed and you didn't get that memo.
So, to Da Boy: I'd love to see you prove my point as you continue to assault innocent people, babies, pregnant mothers, the elderly, and random bicyclists. And maybe once your balls drop you'll understand why what you're doing is wrong.
But until then, stay in San Francisco. Don't move to Houston -- you wouldn't last a New York minute, 'cause small, scared boys like yourself will never fit in.
"One Riot, One Ranger" v. "One Peaceful Sit In, Six Thousand Riot Cops" <--- i'll let you figure out which scenario makes me want to respect the police and which scenario makes me sick.

Doesn't this happen on a daily basis by the homeless? Or anyone "going out" for a night and getting shit faced and puking on the street?

They won't. This type of arguement has gone in circles before, so I don't really want to rekindle an endless thread here, but smashing plate glass windows achieves *nothing*. Do you think the corporate managers of stores like Macy's and Old Navy et. al. are hurt? Insurance covers it, the workers that day (workers like you and I) might somehow be inconvenienced, but it achieves nothing (other than giving business to the local glass company, not such a bad consequence).
Anyway, the system is rotten from within. We need to *educate* the public at large about what is happening and why. Don't bother with the department stores. Bring our collective rage to the mouthpiece - the media outlets. We need more billboard actions, all up and down 101, we need to educate the pro-war public. Yes, there are many horrible pro-war fucks who only want to revel in glorified violence, they are probably beyond help. But the majority of people are ill-informed. Don't blame them. That's like blaming someone for being mentally handicapped. Educate the public now!
So when people go to big department stores, they don't necessarily understand the horros to which they contribute. I was one of them! But I finally woke up a few years ago and other people can be brought out of the fog. Educate! Talk to people! Escalate this protest and bring it the TV stations, the wretched corporate radio, the Comical, wherever. Escalate!
And lastly, and I'm not defending the police here at all, but remember, their job is enforce (unjust) laws. The system is rotten from within - change the laws, which means change the law makers. It's happening. This is just the beginning. Very, very sadly, it may be too late for the citizens of Iraq, but we must not give up. To retreat now might be permanent defeat.
Escalate the protest!

So.....you all want to point fingers at the police?
Maybe you best look at that hand that has one finger pointing at the police and realize that there are three of your own fingers pointing back at you!! Most of you "protesters" have never been a police officer, or been in the military, nor do most ( I said most, not all) of you have very little if any experience in life (i.e. being responsible for someone else, holding a job for more than 6 months, paying for your own rent, food and utilities, and raising children, or having healthy, working relationships ,not just bed partners).
After speaking to a person that (happens to be a close relative of mine )is part of the "protesters"........I realized that this person has little to no life experience and technically has no concept of what he is "protesting" about. I myself would really want to take a good look at the hidden agenda's that your "organizers" have. Besides the fact that most of you don't have the balls to give your real names or even your names to the police, or newspapers, (gee, where is the responsiblilty in that?) and then another good percentage of you that are pictured all over this site are wearing hoods, pull down ski masks, etc. and basicly doing all this stuff under "cover".......(hmmm, and you are pointing fingers at the police for the same thing....hmmm)..........and most or all of the pictures on this site DO NOT deplict violence being done by the police...........I can't help but wonder whom is bullshitting whom...............
And one other thing, this site is suppose to be open to all folks that want to post...........I posted on here 2 days ago, and could not get anything posted again, until I had deleted all my cookies, sure makes me wonder about this site, cuz it was obvious by the cookies I deleted that I had had a cookie planted on my computer to keep me from posting just because I don't happen to agree with the way ya'll are going about things,.........jeeez ya'll, why don't you walk your talk if you are so "well and wonderful" ?

Anyone who's been through "Basic Training" in the military should recognize the results when they see them. They get you to identify completely with your body which is an animal. When you identify completely with your body, you can be trained like any other animal. If the training doesn't take, they weed you out.
I've been to alot of "protest/riots" over the years but have never seen a more pathetic bunch as the creeps involved in these. Used to be that your average asshole would go, knowing that they would come up against the police, take their licks and move on. Now here you have all of these whiny little crybabies boohooing that they weren't allowed to dictate the schedules of virtually every other person in downtown San Francisco. The S.F.P.D. has shown admirable restraint under trying circumstances and will continue to do so until you all get tired and stay home (Berkeley, Concord, Marin County). Every day you all manage to alienate far more people than you could ever hope to convert.
On another note and just for curiosities sake, does your movement actively seek out ugly people and exclude anyone who could be considered remotely attractive? A fellow cop summed it up pretty well the other day after 10 hrs at pier 27. He said that there were 6 or 7 hundred women there and he hadn't seen one that he'd be willing to screw.

Yeah, don't you hate the edumacated classes, what with knowing their rights and having lawyers and all that bullshit? But hey, I'm sure it'll sink in as soon as the SFPD lays off a quarter of its force due to budget cuts and massive civil lawsuits. Then you'll be left using your impressive crowd-control techniques to clean up dog urine in the parking lot of the Gilroy outlet mall.

Tell ya what -- we'll go back to Berkeley, Concord, and Marin County as soon as your cr*cker asses move back to Danville, Fresno, Los Banos, or whatever shit town you're originally from. How's that? We got a deal?
"A fellow cop summed it up pretty well the other day after 10 hrs at pier 27. He said that there were 6 or 7 hundred women there and he hadn't seen one that he'd be willing to screw."
Well, a lot of cops have a repressed homosexuality (not that there's anything wrong with that), so maybe he's trying to tell you something. Do you guys like to examine nightsticks after work? Practice subduance techniques?
See, it's these instances of bottled-up feelings that give us things like the Abner Louima incident in New York. Maybe the city should spend less on fancy stun guns and send you guys to group therapy instead.

What a disturbing thought, officer. I guess we don't wear enough eyeliner and eyeshadow like some of the police?
My father is a 76 year old World War II veteran. He turned into a conservative when he retired and listens to Rush Limbaugh every day. Like the vast majority of people over 60, he is against the war and understands very clearly that it will take forever to get out of Iraq, and the Iraqis citizens have handguns and will start sniping in a few weeks when Baghdad is occupied, and this isn't worth it. He used the phrase "jack booted thugs" describing police pushing protesters in Seattle.
Young people are far more in favor of the war than old people, and this was true even in the Vietnam war.
Anyway, the direction of the information in the TV coverage is going the way the antiwar group predicted. The initial image of Iraqis dancing when the army came isn't representative. Sure, they hate Hussein and soldiers are shooting their commanders in the Iraqi army, but more of them are coming out to the journalists and asking why the US is taking over Iraq like Britain used to control the region. The expected flowers are not being showered on the incoming troops.

After speaking with one anti-war demonstrator, above poster can easily generalize the other 6 million+ (using the same statistical formula CNN uses for its polls).
Most, not all, of you aren't responsible for someone else (It's not enough to be responsible for just yourself), holding a job for more than 6 months (always remember, worship the money! to get a good high paying job so you can afford a house in the suburbs, 2 cars, a dog, and 2.3 kids you must work like a slave to move up the corrupt ladder... material possessions are all that counts), paying for your own rent (hmm... people who live with parents or are homeless must SHUT THE HELL UP! Free speech does not apply to you), food and utilities (save your money for protest signs and bart tickets..haha), and raising children (people who don't have children in this culture have too much time to try to fix social problems. Get busy, have 10 kids, contribute to the world over population crisis... to count as having 'experience in life' you must have kids, but cannot under any circumstance try to improve the world for future generations) or having healthy, working relationships, not just bed partners (live how pop culture tells you, be happy how pop culture tells you, love how pop culture tells you... it’s the monopoly on truth).
For protection, buy duct tape, do not wear masks to protect yourself from gas, peper spray, or targeting. To spend $500 on a Gucci bag you 'really really had to get', that literally took the skin off the back of a fellow animal and exploited a 3rd world workers OK if you want to look cute... but do not under any circumstance buy a $1 bandana to make a political statement or show solidarity with others of similar philosophies. NO NO NO! Though the storm troopers can wear all black, nazi helmets, guns, rifles, samurai batons etc others may not wear any sort of common uniform color or identification.
Look, I know you think since you're paying the police bill, and are supposed to be the ones represented in this republic, that means you should get a say in how things run or even yet be treated respectfully by said parties you are employing. YOU ARE WRONG! The cops aren't supposed to follow the rules society sets out for them, they are allowed to do whatever the fuck they want. The people on the other hand need to just step back and submit... you've never been a police officer or in the military (or most of you anyway) therefore you just don't know... so don't make any demands regarding your freedoms or rights. The people should not decide how they want to be ruled, the police must not be accountable to regulations established for them by the people.
They tell you to be happy, but they really just want you to BE QUIET!

It's THE GREAT MAJORITY of the *rest* of the rank-and-file cops who are beating us up!--or who are, salivating, waiting for their turn/chance to do so! (YOU EVER SEE HOW THEY *'SQUEEZE'*--'MASTURBATE'--THEIR NIGHTSTICKS BEFORE THEY GO OFF?)--or who support (and later, back at the locker room, cheer on) those bad cops who do!--or who don't STOP the police harrassment/abuse/brutality of the great majority of bad cops who do! What "integrity" do THEY have?
A so-called 'few good apples' doesn't negate THE *TRUE* NATURE AND *TRUE* PURPOSE OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT *AS A WHOLE* AND AS A STATE APPARATUS/INSTITUTION: TO "PROTECT & SERVE" THE STATE AND ITS CAPITALIST ASSETS, as well as TO BE THE STREET ENFORCEMENT ARM OF THE INSTITUTIONAL RACISM OF THE STATE IN THE BLACK AND LATINO COMMUNITIES AND ON THE NATIVE AMERICAN RESERVATIONS.
(A incisively, devastatingly honest white South African living under, then, apartheid remarked in a tv journalist interview about the, percentage-wise, FEW so-called "nice" whites in South Africa: He said, "It doesn't matter whether some apartheid whites claim to be 'nice' or not -- the issue is that, under the apartheid *SYSTEM*, whites can treat Blacks however they want." THE SAME IS *EXACTLY* TRUE FOR THE COPS AND THEIR *SYSTEM*!)

This is "the few good apples" argument, promoted by some liberals, as opposed to "the few bad apples" argument, promoted by the state or the media to throw the people a rhetorical PR biscuit when a police brutality scandal breaks out.

Do these "good cops" report the behavior of the bad cops to their superiors (who won't support so-called good cops anyway), to the mayor (Willie B!?: lotta good that'll do!), to the Police Review Commission (even tho it's an utterly toothless agency), to the city Police Commission, to Police Watch or Cop Watch, or to the media, or even anonymously to call-in radio talk shows (giving sufficient information to authenticate themselves as cops)?

Ah, so *you're* the poster child for caps-control.
Or do you believe "All-caps don't kill thought, ranters kill thought?"
Or do you believe "All-caps don't kill thought, ranters kill thought?"
What a sad attempt at pretentiousness.
Get an education, and then get back to me.
Get an education, and then get back to me.
Thanks veteran for reminding me.
36 years ago I was in Navy bootcamp in San Diego. My company commander didn't like me much. i just couldn't follow orders, not even to march with the company. He was competing with other CC's for the best company and knew I would ruin his chances to be number one. I couldn't just be kicked out because I was in on program for electronics school.
He called in favor and got me a cushy job taking care of a supply office for the bootcamp. I was basically exempted from most of boot camp.
This was the beginning of almost six years (it took that much to get the school I wanted at the time) of challenging authority while rising in rank.
And with good duty along the way.
67-68 SF
68-70 Big Sur
71 VietNam (no combat, high clearance work)
72 SF and and active in the anti-war movement
73 I was volunteering for KPFA on a transition program and got out the day the peace agreements were signed.
As an E-3 teaching nite school in eletronics, I had E-7, career chief petty officers in my class. (they were slow learners) I had authority over them, and when they were dis-respectful I execised it, sucessfully.
In vietnam, (Danang) not only did my CC hate me, the XO on the base of 10k, knew me and hated my guts. Marines were blown away to find anti-war posters in the crypto repair shop i was in charge of.
Yet the second in command of electronics and I got along great.
And I maintained good relationships with many other officers thruout those years. Some even went to bat for me to get my orders to vietnam changed.
The military is highly competetive, esp amoungst officers. I expect SFPD is the same.
Resistance is Fertile!

Um, have you BEEN to a protest? How are you going to tell me that the 50/60/70 year olds have no life experience? I went to one with my landlords who have ran this particular apartment complex together for 20 years (yes, I have my own apartment where I have resided for the last 3 years, I pay my own bills AND hold my own job AND go to school AND am in a committed relationship).
Yes, there are a lot of kids at protests who don't have a lot of life experience. But there are also veterans, ex-cops, parents, grandparents, politicians, lawyers, business owners, etc. Don't group us all into one group just so you can patronize us.

I've heard from demonstrators that the police are
"nazis," and that they should throw down their batons and join the rally. The simple fact is that they do have a job to do. The job is not to oppress our first ammendment rights, its to keep San Francisco streets moving. Public safety, whether you think so or not, is at risk if the whole city is gridlocked. We do have a right to voice our opinions without goverment oppression. However, the public safety has to be the police priority. I heard people saying, "go home, we don't need you," to the police. If the police just left, those same whiners would be calling the police when they couldn't get home or the few splinter groups went wild and began to smash windows. The same whiners who say that the police shouldn't be there are the first ones to blame the police when something goes wrong. The bottom line is that we do need to have the police there for our safety. If the police just said, "fuck it," and went to the donut shop, i'd place money on the fact that the city would go to shit in about 1 hour. Stop whining about the cops and protest the war if you want. But I say try for one moment to stand in their shoes, listening to people call them evey name in the book, trying to goat them into some sort of retalliation, just so that the person can say, "your'e a nazi." A lot of cops think the war is crazy too, but they took an oath to protect and serve all San Franciscans, not just the protesters.

Keeping the streets of SF moving (which, by the way, is *not* their motive) has nothing to do with pulling paralyzed people out of wheelchairs and beating them on the ground, or with hitting six-year-old girls in the face with batons and then cracking their fathers' skulls on the curb (a la American History X).
And if you think otherwise, you're a mother fucking fool. Or, as is more likely the case, you're a cop yourself just making shit up to make yourselves look good.
And in that case, good luck, tool. Hopefully this war ends soon because if not, it's not the incredible kids in the Gulf that I'm worried about, catch my drift, little bitch?

Keeping the streets of SF moving (which, by the way, is *not* their motive) has nothing to do with pulling paralyzed people out of wheelchairs and beating them on the ground, or with hitting six-year-old girls in the face with batons and then cracking their fathers' skulls on the curb (a la American History X).

" Becoming a cop, though, is usually not just about the money...although the money is MUCH better than it ought to be. "
***YES!!!***
Police work--even as a trainee--pays the MOST amount of money for, *usually/generally*, the LEAST amount of formal education one can have (usually just a high school G.E.D. or sometimes, at the very utmost, a couple years of college). There are some university departmental secretaries who work on things like rewriting manuscipts for university professors, and university deparments typically require those secretaries to have a bachelor's degree and, to be competive, at least some graduate school. Look at how poorly most teachers are paid, unless they work in an affluent white suburb. (Affluent whites don't want their teachers having to buy their own chalk and erasers--such teachers might teach lessons about working-class history and "The People's History of the United States").
Big city cops, on the average, even get paid more than new, and sometimes not-so-new, law school graduates from Berkeley or Stanford--and *especially* law school graduates doing true public interest law. Then, big-city cops get super-comfy retirement packages. The police brass basically keep their pay, benefits and perks--for no work at all--even in retirement for the rest of their lives. And senior retired cops keep the majority of their pay and benefits--again for doing no work for the rest of their lives. (At least most retired professors usually still do academic, research and writing work until they are too infirmed to do so.)
In addition, if you look at the National Bureau of Labor Statistics, and look at the Occupational Serious Injury & Mortality Rates, you will discover that police work is actually a pretty safe occupation. Several major categories of occupations are *MUCH* more dangerous: MINING is #1; construction work; transportation work (like truck driving or working for an airline); farming work (LOTS of farm occupational accidents--maimings and killings from farm machines; traditionally, being a dockworker; being a teenager on a family farm is one of the most dangerous work next to mining); working as a convenience store employee (MUCH higher probability for being shot; working as a cab driver (again, MUCH higher chance of getting shot or stabbed), as well as several other major categories well above police work. Police work is down in about the 12th category of occupational serious injury and mortality rates. And the police get MUCH better protective equipment.
Corporate TV, of course, greatly hypes the danger of police work in order to fool the public that the police are actually doing anything. The rate of unsolved crimes--except for too bit, underclass, street level, drug busts (but never the white importers)--in the people of color communities is MONUMENTAL!!! Remember the tv news magazine installment about the hundreds of rape cases that big city police just write off--even disposing the evidence.
THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POLICE IS **NOT** TO SOLVE CRIMES (EXCEPT PETTY CRIMES, WHEN THEY OPPORTUNISTICALLY CAN), BUT TO BE AVAILABLE, AS AN ARMED FORCE, TO *CRUSH DISSENT*--WHETHER LABOR DISSENT OR POLITICAL DISSENT--WHEN THE CAPITALISTS NEED THEM TO.
(Look at how the police let Polly Klaas's murderer slip right through their fingers! Had Polly's kidnapper been a scruff black/Latino guy, out of place on an isolated nearby country road, the police would have nabbed him. Look at how Elizabeth Smart's family finally ignored the police and publicized their own information about Elizabeth's kidnapping suspect and got a tip from the public that *then* resulted in Elizabeth's recovery by the police!)
This makes sense, if you think about it. If the state wants to employ you as the state's hired goons, they want to ensure sure that cops won't easily DEFECT and join the other side or become one of the state's/system's knowledgeable critics, especially an insider or former insider. So, the state pay cops the most they can--readily assisted by strong police unions--to keep cops at least reasonably/fairly happy, financially. And then they let cops go out and, according to their individual proclivities, get their orgasmic rush beating heads, torturing victims or killing people (especially if the victims are black/Latino), because the cops know that, even in a scandal, nothing much will ultimately happen to them. The state agreement with the cops is the state principle of "reasonable force"--an agreement (wink) with a VERY WIDE latitude.
Or in the worst brutality scandal cases--POLICE MURDER--usually against black police shooting victims--the cops know that--regardless of any criminal sentence--they--the political PR sacrificial lambs--will only actually serve maybe, a slap-on-the-wrist, plus-or-minus 12 months or so at a country club prison where they can walk among the hedges, play golf or tennis, have very nice, basically, live-work office-like cells to relax and read in, etc. The police unions and the police department and the city will pick up the legal tab to defend even guilty cops.
(I MEAN, I WISH I COULD GO TO THE KIND OF COUNTRY CLUB 'PRISONS' THEY SEND COPS AND CORPORATE CRIMINALS TO *FOR A VACATION*, SO I COULD CATCH UP ON MY READING, STUDYING AND WRITING WHILE THE STATE PICKED UP MY HOUSING AND FOOD BILLS FOR A YEAR OR TWO! MOST BLACK KIDS FROM THE GHETTO WOULD BREAK *INTO* ONE OF THOSE COUNTRY CLUB 'PRISONS' EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS--OR EVERY FEW MONTHS--IF THE GUARDS LET THEM CLIMB OVER THE FENCES!!!)
PEOPLE IN THE CORPORATE MEDIA GET SIMILARLY HIGH-PAID JOBS, EVEN AS LOW-LEVEL REPORTERS--AND OF COURSE EVEN *MUCH* HIGHER PAY IF THEY ARE MAJOR REPORTERS OR NEWS ANCHOR PEOPLE--FOR THE SAME REASON: CORPORATIONS WANT TO KEEP THEIR LACKEYES, STENOGRAPHERS, PROPAGANDISTS AND MOUTHPIECES HAPPY SO THAT CORPORATE 'JOURNALISTS' ALSO DON'T READILY GET UPSET, DEFECT, AND SWITCH SIDES, ESPECIALLY AS KNOWING INSIDERS OR FORMER INSIDERS.

(to erasmus: people of color don't have to adopt white internet cultural standards for capitalization; i use it to emphasize, not to shout. whites don't set the universal standards for *EVERYTHING*!!!)

[AS OPPOSED TO THE MATERIALIST, CONSUMERISM *CORPORATE* GRAFFITI--COMMERCIAL BILLBOARDS--VISUALLY POLLUTING OUR COMMUNITIES--ESPECIALLY THE BLACK/LATINO COMMUNITIES.] I merely talked about CD/DA against corporate property and chain stores as a method of "ISSUING A CONSEQUENCE" to unchecked continued police brutality against nonviolent protesters and other innocent people.
escalate: "Do you think the corporate managers of stores like Macy's and Old Navy et. al. are hurt?"
Yes. I have a friend who is a manager of one of The Gap stores in the region. The profits of these stores are down already.
escalate: "Insurance covers it,"
anon: Insurance doesn't cover everything. It certainly doesn't cover repeated DA. Have you ever heard of "deductables"? Have you ever heard of "limits"? Otherwise, anytime a store manager wanted a spiffy new window, s/he could just smash the old one. Also, it often takes a long time to replace such items.
escalate: "the workers that day (workers like you and I) might somehow be inconvenienced,"
I've already been "inconvenienced" as an anti-war protester. I don't do this for fun--and it has taken up a LOT of my time. I do this so that *workers* in other countries aren't killed by our military or the brutal dictators that our govt repeatedly supports--and so that *workers* in this country aren't killed by either the Frankensteins our govt has created or the rightfully agrieved people our govt has terrorized and who strike back at "The Empire" as in 9-11 (assuming our govt didn't set up Islamic fundamentalist patsies to do the job, while our govt stood down and let it happen). And I do this so that our govt doesn't use war excuses as a way to take away the freedoms, rights, and liberties our govt claims the "terrorists" or Bin Laden is trying to take away, and thus turn us into a police state--the kind that attacks nonviolent protesters and innocent bystanders.
escalate: "but it achieves nothing"
anon: If you don't believe that, according to your words, "smashed plate glass windows" aren't bad for business, why not go ask a corporate department store manager or a corporate chain store manager. Potential customers don't like to shop at stores where empty "smashed windows" are boarded up--it's not attracting of business and potential customers don't feel as safe. It doesn't make the business/shopping district look nice either. It scares investors and potential creditors too. Insurance might *partially* cover the "smashed plate glass"--in some cases--but it doesn't cover the lost business or the bad image, especially when the reason for the DA is made *crystal* clear: THE ISSUANCE OF A CONSEQUENCE FOR POLICE BRUTALITY AGAINST PEACEFUL PROTESTERS.
Do you suggest that we just get beat and do nothing?
escalate: "(other than giving business to the local glass company, not such a bad consequence)."
anon: we totally agree on this -- a good benefit for the workers!!!
Each of us has to get in where we fit in. And each of us has to excercise our racial and citizenship privilege (like not being deportable), resources, skills, talents and CREATIVITY to the maximum extent possible. Some of us will 'consequate', some of us will educate, some of us will do both: play your position.
