San Francisco peace ride report

by jeandiva
Bike riders supported peace marchers today. Later reported violence against cyclists by SFPD. Who started what?
A large group of cyclists peacefully protested today by riding and cheering the protesters near Civic Center and Market then jetting down congested auto traffic on Mission St. to Van Ness to Fisherman's Wharf to the Embarcadero and finally rejoining the protest on 8th and Market, where we met up with the spirited Extra Action Brass Band. Along the way we got support from pedestrians and motorists alike.

Later however, there were reports of black bloc protestors marching tonight. Fires were set in trash cans on Market St. and of course there followed the naturally ensuing attention from police forces.

Cyclists were apparently pulled from their bikes by violence from the SFPD. Violence begets violence. The peaceful bike protest this afternoon has no affiliation with the violent wannabe trust-baby anarchists from the black bloc. I speak as an individual. But I also speak with 7 years experience of peaceful use of bicycles as a form of protest and if what I suspect is true, I sure don't appreciate the people from the black bloc involving newbies (who might happen to be riding down Market Street on bikes) in bullshit with the cops.

We'll see how this sorts out. But keep the molotovs away from us or you will learn to fear the krypto, and not because it's beating on you. We ride with no masks, no shame and no fear. Remember Ghandi and MLK had a long lasting and powerful effect partly because of the methods they used. If you want the masses to accept anarchy you'd better explain it a little better than by burning shit up and smashing windows.

Maybe the black bloc should lighten up and try taking off the black bandannas. They are very fucking serious. Try a clown mask for fucks sake. We might get more people on our side. The black bloc could be very useful to those of us who actually espouse peace, if they used different methods. Some of us think that violence for the sake of violence is a losing proposition. But hey, ask Bush about that one.

Screw the bad apples. All in all, the masses are responding well. This is about anti-war, but it is more it is a class struggle coming to a head. A quest for social justice and an end to oil/car/$$$ dependency and OVERconsumption.

FRIDAY -- Justin Herman Plaza -- CRITICAL MASS -- Assemble at 530, Leave at 600pm!!

Could be a HUGE, it IS an important one.

Hope to see EVERYONE there.

i have criticisms (a lot of them) of ANSWER, IAC, WWP, RCP, and other groups and other tactics (even the bike movement). but i am holding my tongue right now.

I don't disparage ANYONE who got off their ass and did something against the war.

I 100% assure you as an activist for 20 years that the police violence you experience would be no different whether people were black blocing or not.

This was a myth that came out of Seattle, too. The FACT is that the police mostly attacked peaceful demonstrators and left most of black bloc to do their thing. Even Medea Benjamin, in her public apology regarding her imfamous "arrest them" remark, makes this point. And even Gloria La Riva, a target of much anarchist vitriol, has publicly said that she refuses to condemn anyone's tactics against the war.

I can also speak as a matter of personal experience that the sterotype you invoke of trust fund kiddies does exist in reality, but it isn't where a lot (most? dunno) of them are coming from.

Every resource spent to control us is a resource they can't use to kill iraqis (and soon iranians and syrians and saudis and...).

the cops were going to be violent no matter who was there. they were hitting people with old navy bags with their batons. believe it or not, the shoppers weren't wearing masks and they were smashed just like everyone else! cops were looking for a reason to hit people, and it didn't take much. I was on the sidewalk while you were riding by, and I saw maybe a lot more than you did. the cops that attacked the bikers allowed them to pass by, then chased and attacked them. no black blockers around. just cops and bikes.

don't condemn anyone else. you don't have all the facts, my friend, just one vantage point.

do keep on riding, though, and watch out for the sticks!

That clown mask idea is a good one.
