Anti-War Car Rammed by Angry Driver

by Daniel Burton
On Saturday March 22nd around 6 P.M. a car with anti-war poster on it was purposefully rammed by the car behind it.

Daniel Burton, a 25-year old UC Berkeley alumhus in Computer Science, had been driving his old Volvo, adorned with anti-war posters slowly down Market St. towards Powell when he was rammed from behind by an angry driver. As he tried to turn right to pick up his friend, he was continuously blocked by pedestrians crossing in front of him. A Muni pedestrian island blocked the cars behind him from chaning lanes. After two signal changes, the driver behind him, who had been yelling, "Come on move your car!" became agitated and rammed the Volvo with full force on the gas pedal.

Mr. Burton at that point put the car into park and got out. He requested that the driver give him his name and address, since an car "accident" had just happened. The driver, who had previously been full of macho energy, now looked scared. Mr. Burton took down his license plate number, California 4XCC394. The driver proclaimed "It's a rental car."

Mr. Burton then climbed back into the car and turned to the right, letting the line of traffic continue.

Mr. Burton says that he will report the accident to the DMV, but hasn't decided whether to report the incident to the police (since intentionally ramming a car is a crime). He is struggling with the moral issues of using the police to achieve his goals.

"Next time something like this happens, I will try to place the driver under citizen's arrest," he says. "It just slipped my mind this time."

His advice to anyone else who has something like this happen to them: "Once someone purposefully attacks you or your vehicle, even with a car, it is perfectly legal to say, 'I am placing you under citizen's arrest,' and then you can lay hands on them. If you feel up to it, go ahead and do so. You can carry pepper spray to use in self-defense also, and once they try to punch you, it is legal to use it on them. Always use caution though. Only fight back and try to apprehend the person if you feel safe doing so."

If it was a rental car, the license number will trace directly back to the driver. The rental company will have a record of who had that car that day.

The driver is probably in for some shit from them once the accident report is filed. Loss Damage Waivers (or rental insurance from a credit card company) emphatically do not cover damage as a result of driver misconduct.

I hope the guy who was rammed does file a police report. There's nothing unethical about expecting the system to perform as advertised, i.e., to take reckless and dangerous driving seriously as a public hazard.

In addition, a police report will probably increase the likelihood that the dingbat will have to pay for the damage to the car he misused.

give the cops something to occupy them. if they send 2 cops to deal with your incident, that's 2 fewer cops dealing with protesters.

besides, that's what the police are there for anyway. force them to deal with a road-raging driver
by big protestor
I love that Nazis only will try to pick on a protestor once they've reassured themselves that protestors are scrawny. Big Brave Nazis. To cowardly to volunteer and go fight Iraqis.

BTW, I'm 6-4, and weigh about 280 lbs. I played nose tackle on a football team. And I'm at every protest I can get to. Look forward to meeting you and a protest soon.

I love the way you sfindy nuts censor comments.

You delete what you don't want people to read.

Fucking assholes.

280?

Geez, Jenny Craig, dude. Fast.

Maybe if you dropped a few you could get laid, and then you wouldn't have to spend all your time at protests.

Im glad this asshole got rammed. He deserves it. Support your country and that may not happen to you. I bet you have no idea why were over in Iraq. Hey, bigman, Im smaller than you and I wish I could meet so I could embarass you. Grow up and show support you bums!

So first you say that he was rammed simply because of his anti-war poster on his car. Then you detail that he was rammed because the driver behind him got impatient because he wasn't moving his car. This has almost happened to me dozens of times in this city and I don't have anything pro or anti-war on my car.
Sounds like this is a case of an asshole driver becoming impatient, NOT some sort of intimidation tactic against anti-war views.
Can any of you read?
by Kevin
Can you read is the question??? The author of the article is the same person whose van who got rammed. ASSHOLE!

So this D. Burton wrote about himself in the third person, and I was responding assuming a difference between writer and subject. Big deal. How does that undermine the point I made?

so your saying that your glad that this daniel guy could've been killed just because he opposed the war? you shrub supporters have serious issues.. i'm amazed that u can even use the internet.. or do you type with 1 finger like my 6 year old sister? bit high tech for u isn't it?
by Urkel
Look forward to meeting me for what?

BTW I'm 6"-4, 130 pounds and used to pitch for our softball team

What's your point?
by ......
Why do you assume that just because someone is 6'4" and 280 pounds that they're a "dude", anyways? I'm picturing a real big bull-dyke with spiky hair wearing a "Team Dresch" tanktop and big clunky boots.
