What the cops said

by puddle
close encounters of the cop kind M20

Here are some things the cops said to me and others at the arrest site (mission and 7th) and after:

--One of them laughed when a young girl asked to be read her rights. I guess rights are pretty funny to the cops. Well, obviously, I guess.

--One of them, when arresting a young girl dressed sexy, leered at her and looked her up and down. She said later that he asked her if she just got off work taking her clothes off. Nice.

--At the Pier, they left our group on the bus for 45 minutes or so, then let us out, searched us, and left our group in cuffs in a pen separate from everyone else. When we asked why, we were told they didn't know, and they didn't know who was in charge of us. No one made much of a move to find out. It was a good 25 minute before someone came with cutters.

--They dragged a woman at the pier off a paddy wagon screaming and crying, obviously in pain. She was screaming for a medic while they (4 little piggies) yelled at her to walk and tried to hurt her to make her do so. They were grabbing her by her ear and putting her wrists in pain locks. She could not walk; this was obvious to the rest of us, yet it somehow escaped the cops. All four finally dragged her away to one of the holding pens and walked back, patting eachother on the back proudly and saying "good job!"

--Later, supporting those still in the jail on 7th, a large amount of police in riot gear began to circle us. I went up to one of the cops and asked him if I could ask him a question.
cop: probably not.
me: I probably can't ask you a question?
cop: I probably can't answer it.
me: what's going on? why are there suddenly all these cops in riot gear?
cop: I can't say.
me: OK, well are we doing something illegal by being here? Are we going to be arrested for waiting for our friends?
cop: I can't say that either.
me: Well, what do you think is going to happen?
cop: I don't think, I just do as I'm told.

For once, I was speechless. I had to walk away. Nothing I've heard cops say has scared me more than that sentence right there. There are not humans behind those helmets like I once hoped. They are just brainless shells, or trained monkeys with weapons, not thought or human heart to what they are doing.
