Rachel Corrie cartoon draws Univ of Maryland protest

by free
found at http://www.unknownnews.net -- the Razorback school paper was protested on 3/20 for an incredibly offensive cartoon they published about martyred activist Rachel Corrie. Amazingly, they offer no apology...
the article:

http://www.inform.umd.edu/News/Diamondback/archives/2003/03/20/news1.html

the cartoon:

very juvenile - not even quality black humor, just dumb stuff.
why are people applauding death these days? is it simply
acting out, or transfer of their fears and despising others
to cover up?

Not for long, at this rate.

It's fast shedding it's interest in the 'america' you think it is.

Interesting, "martyred" activist you call her.
You have adopted the language of the actual terrorists. Very interesting. Sicko killer Hamas, who Rachel's organization once protected, would be very proud.

It's interesting that the same flag that she was burning one month earlier is the same flag that the palestinians draped over her coffin in a mock funeral.

I thought the cartoon was pretty funny. Ya know it is his freedom of speech to draw what ever he wants, I mean look at Ted Rall's crappy cartoon comparing our troops to the Nazi SS troops; He also has the right to do that as well. I guess some people don't really appreciate the whole freedom of speech thing like the rest of us.

It is interesting that you say "martyred" is the language
of the actual terrorists. For "martyr" is an English word,
and as used by me in this context, it fits the actual
definition of the word. Unless Bush has changed
the meaning of another word... Or, unless you are
saying that the actual terrorists and people who speak
English -- like, say, Bush and his merry band of
murdering, lying thieves -- or, say, the guy driving the
bulldozer who "martyred" this girl are the actual
terrorists (I bet the dozer driver is not proud of what
he did, so why are you?)

http://www.m-w.com --- "martyr" =
Main Entry: 1mar·tyr
Pronunciation: 'mär-t&r
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English, from Late Latin, from Greek martyr-, martys, literally, witness
Date: before 12th century

2 : a person who sacrifices something of great value and especially life itself for the sake of principle

While it was a harsh cartoon, it had a good point. And certainly it's no harsher than a lot of the cartoons by Ted Rall, which y'all love. Corrie knew the risks, and died in an accident. She chose to be there. The best take on the situation is here.

Of course there was an uproar over it. What did ya think would happen when every indymedia site was carrying the cartoon with inflamatory rhetoric and calls to email every administrator at the paper and school?

Maybe the paper is standing its ground because some little birdie informed them of the campaign to repress someone elses' right to free speech?

Wonder where the Freepers are...
