Sonoma County Protests-3/20

by Derek Boland (freedumb84 [at] hotmail.com)
Protestors from Sonoma County take over streets.
Starting at 8am this (Thursday) morning, people started showing up at Courthouse Square in downtown Santa Rosa. At noon the group of about 300 people marched to the federal building on Sonoma Ave., a die in followed. Once we were there for about 30 minutes we marched up D street, back to 4th, to the mall where we closed the main enterance, then back up 4th to Mendocino. Once we reached the recruitment center, whose doors were already locked, we formed a huge peace sign, then headed down to Santa Rosa High where we yelled, "walkout" to the students as they watched from the windows. The whole day was calm until a girl's foot was run over by an old lady in a car who refused to move, peoples emotions escalated and while trying to get the lady to move people jumped on the car and there was one arrest. From there we got word that fellow protestors were being blocked off by the Chevron on College and Mendocino. The group marched down to that intersection and we all sat down. 15-20 minutes later the police issued a dispersal order, and from the group that was at this time about 500 deep, about 35 people decided to be arrested. Mass traffic build ups occured everywhere we marched. The arrests started at about 3:10, we had the streets for 3HOURS!!! Demonstrators plan to stay at Courthouse Square throughout the evening. If anyone has pictures of this event please submit them and keep up the fight.
