Annapurna Forcefully Removed from Redwood
On Tuesday, March 18 in Freshwater, a sensitive and courageous woman was forcefully removed from her treetop perch where she was locked down trying to save the trees she loves.
This is a picture of Annapurna on the very top of a Redwood tree in the lower treesit village of Freshwater. Following is a poem she wrote while in the trees.
Tree Time
I want to live. I wake up every morning and sing to myself in the pre-dawn shades of sun light just peaking over the edge of blue mountain tops.
The trees are so big and I am so small. I am sheltered by them, held close by their branches, safer than ever before, yet putting my life on the line at every moment, living in the sky, verticality reality, pure canopy experience, tree life existence, persistence in the struggle for that which is true over that which will fool you into believing in anything else besides yourself.
Courageous leaps of faith are required to get from treetop to treetop and spinning upside down to the ground is a peculiar notion. Yet I am touched by emotion each time I come close to these ancient beings, wiser than I by far.
I listen close as they whisper their secrets to the wind, sister moon illuminating shimmering foliage as the fire in the sky dims once more into starry nightfall and the fog rolls in thick from the ocean covering all in blankets of moisture, thankful once more as I drift into dream spell.

Is the message loud and clear yet? You climb a tree, you mark that tree for death. The forest defenders have now just become the forest slayers. It's about time.
Excuse me, but I believe the title of "tree slayer " has long belonged to PL, and it is a badge that they wear proudly. ( current practice includes today's act of killing a tree which is NOT a valuable timber tree, just because they can, just to make a statement and attempt to demoralize the tree sitters.) And, you should be ashamed of yourself, taking the comments of a true freedom defender in vain.
Clearly, you have no idea what you're talking about. When an activist climbs a tree, it does not mean that tree will get cut down. Do you remeber Julia? Didn't she protect not one, but many, trees? Maybe you should look back on history before you mouth off.
Is the message loud and clear yet? You loggers are evil, your industry and your livelihood are finished. You and your ilk have already destroyed the old growth. These people were just trying to save the last few individuals of the most ancient life forms on earth. Do you really think that because you have a chainsaw that you're a man? You're using your skills purely for the forces of greed, who care nothing about you. Your way of life is history, over, done-- steel stud framing and efficient panelized construction will be replacing you're wasteful plywood and studs, and there's no old growth left to cut-- you've just killed the last of them-- proud, aren't you? Proud that you your ignorance and machismo and anger sealed the fate and demise of your own livelihood? Big chainsaw, little balls-- now you have to go find something to do besides collect wellfare, now that you've destroyed the last-- you are a destroyer and a criminal-- get the picture?? You are an ignorant, low IQ, redneck, gun-toting, chainsaw-slinging, brainless backwoods toothless lost cause-- a hazard to the civilized world of caring citizens, you are a criminal, and only dangerous because you carry a chainsaw-- let's see you use your brains-- or is your head too full of sawdust? I have no love for you-- you are evil, and should be prosecuted-- you are a criminal working for a criminal organization who violates court orders-- proud of your detestable occupation now? proud of the mess you've made of your life and of the woods? proud that you have nothing to show for your self but the devastation of the countryside? Proud that your a toothless redneck with swdust for brains? Is the message loud and clear yet? You do not belong in the woods, you are a hazard to life on earth, a very bad example of our species. By the way, I am not of the tree-sit community, so you need not indict them for my comments, I am a voice from the capitalist world-- we know about profit and loss, and the profits you work for are bankrupt-- you are nothing but a loss-- nasty vile redneck liquidation-logger!

natureboy, you're right on the mark. i have no love for those of you who kill, soil, and sell the ground from under our very own feet. your ignorance, violence, agression and greed represents a cancer to our species and our planet, and you must be cut out in order to save the rest of us who see beyond our own personal comfort in a screaming world. your little northern enclave of dead values and outdated ideals is growing smaller by the minute as those of us who honor our responsibilty to protect what miserable remains of our home that still stand come marching to defend lifeforms who predate your native-killing ancestors and have earned the right to be alive. fuck you flannel wearing, homophobic relics. take your chainsaws and castrate yourselves. then go join the army.
We must continue defending the old growth trees, also the young seedlings growing safely in their shadows. The canopy of the old growth provides shelter for the new, without this the young trees will dry out in direct sunlight. Clear cutting is very harmful in the long-term because in can change an entire ecosystem by letting heat tolerent underbrush take the place of the redwoods. There are also many other organisms that are dependent on the canopy's protection to keep moisture from evaporating..
This may be common knowledge to most people, but then why is Maxxam/PL allowed to destroy the old growth forests? America as a nation has been blinded by greed, many people cannot think clearly when they are forced into the capitalist treadmill..
Americans are now killing innocent people so we can gain access to fossil fuels under their land. Police are arresting young people who have the nerve to stand up and protect treasures like the redwoods and rally for peace in the cities. The apathetic others who waste resources by driving SUVs and consume beef products are rewarded by the toxic capitalist scum that rules this nation..
As you can see, life gets no respect in this system, it will get worse and we have a fight on our hands. However, these are the death throes of the imperialists, they are trying to drag us with them to their pitiful graves.
We can respond by standing up and continuing the fight to survive, protecting life and love on Mother Earth. Don't lose hope in these times of violence and greed..

So let me get this straight. Natureboy writes this hateful, inflammatory screed, yet when somebody challenges it with humor and style they get censored. That's real "independent" media. People who can't stand a lampoon are the ones who need it the most, you pompous airheads.
The struggle to save forests has been going on for a long time all over the Pacific Northwest. In Vancouver, BC, people are defending thousand-year-old stands of Douglas Fir and Red Cedar in the Elaho Valley and Stoltman Wilderness. Finding out about the history and organization of forest defenses in other bioregions can expand one's sense of history and catalyze new strategic and tactical thinking. Share the wisdom. ( Find the Elaho/Stoltman website: http://www.wildernesscommittee.org/library/stoltmann/newsletter/FALL2000.HTM ) Exchanging newsletters with other groups and placing reciprocal links on websites is a good way to expand the flow of attention to these issues.
I was part of a great thing in the winter of 99-2000. I was coming up from san francisco just kinda not really going anywhere. I met this man named Draco and he lived north in the town of pepperwood, Well he told me about a base camp in redcrest were Earth First had a mash tent set up to assist the tree-sitters on gypsy mountain. When he told me all this i started to get goosebumps and the blood in me started to run a little faster. I spent the last of my money on a bus ticket to arcata and of i went. I got there at 3:30am and if youve ever been there the only place open is don's doughnuts so i hung out there till 7 or 8 and made my way to the co-op board. I met 3 people there who had one seat open for a ride to redcrest so i went with my calling and went were upon arrival I got my non-violence training and climbing training. Then obout 2 weeks after a call came in saying fallers were on there way up to the mountain and off we all went about 4 car loads. We all raced up and got to the top and started setting up camp. I remained on the mountain for 4 months, 1 month in Tara 5 days in Aratia 3 months as ground support. My comment is that if anyone has the chance to take to the trees dont think twice about it because it was the most eye-opening,spiritual,soul searching experince of my life and it changed the way I feel about alot of things, those people that were up there with me are my family. The trees can not defend themselfs from the sharp edge of a chainsaw, but the tree can defend you and keep you safe in its huge long arms and its strong massive roots, and you can defend the tree just the same. CUTTER peace, love,DEFENCE
