Treesitters being Evicted from Freshwater

That's really interesting thanks for posing it.

Does anyone know of a treesitter journal or papers online? I'm wondering things like how do they go pee?

No doubt Wren and Remedy are in the happy Humboldt Hilton, but were they injured? are they at least safe? Are charges being pressed? Has PALCO gone and felled Jerry and Eversteen yet? Can they still be stopped from doing so? What's going on up there?!

at this point i think that information is kind of trivial. but if you must know they pee into milk jugs (girls use a funnel) and they poo into buckets. Some methods of deffense include locking down (placing your arms inside of an angled metal tube and hand cuffing your hands together essentially) and going to the verry top of thee tree and hugging and shaking it around when the climbers come.

When I finally left the scene, the trees were still standing but Wren and Remedy were taken away. A Ambulence left about the same time Wren did.... So I don't know for sure, but she might of been hurt. Gods, I hope not, but I'm just adding things together. Right now we all the help we can get. Bring everyone you know.

The cops were being brutal and a few got peppered spray in their face (grazed my cheek as the guy next to me got it bad) and others got wacked with the clubs. Unfortunately there was very little to no press coverage on that. I'm going back up there for the Pepperbox and documenting what goes on.

P.L. said they'd be doing this all week. I hope to see more people there over the week.

Today (March 18th) they will be hauling out more sitters.

Got a call Monday night from Freshwater with this info: PL climbers threw blankets over the Remedy and Wren's heads and then zip-tied their feet andharnessed them to bring them down.

PL now has about 6 climbers at this task, having hired through an ad in the paper. They pay about $90 an hour, I was told. The climbers spent much of the day smoking cigarettes in the trees, dropping the butts and other trash.

A peaceful crowd that had gathered in support had been pepper-sprayed, leaving many screaming and crying.

My caller says the climbers will be back out tomorrow to remove more tree sitters. She has gone home and plans to be back out early tomorrow too. Support is needed up there, she says!

Where are all the loggers and the rest of the pro-timber community during these strenuous times? Oh yeah, they must be at work. It's a good thing someone's paying taxes for other's welfare and food stamps.

Not a single forest defender I have ever met subsists on welfare or takes food stamps. You, my friend, are sorely lacking in your facts, and should do a little research before posting here further.

What an amazing day. No one was injured, three ground arrests and 2 sitters removed. (Channel 6 News).
The closure of the road was a particularly amazing act of magic accomplished on behalf of The Maxxam Corporation (SP?) of Houston, TX.
Concerned friends of humanity and earth gathered at a road block maintained by Humboldt Co. Sheriffs and C.H.P. The latter being of better mood and more willing to converse, if you didn't scream at them. None the less it appears as though an illegal road block may have taken place today. People of resource attempted to track down the legal order pertaining to public officers blocking the observation of the evictions. There was a reference to an "Encroachment Order". One person stated that a cell phone call to California Highway Dept. yielded nothing. Officers had the physical document on site, but its legitimacy was in question. Obviously, yet another huge blow to old fashion constitutional rights of the American individual, our freedom to travel through-out the land with out harassment. For the mass majority of the time "Independent Observers" were blocked from, you got it, observing. The road is closed this week for the evictions between the 8:00 Am and 4:00 pm. Of particular interest to me was dialogue that occurred between the police and people forming at the front of the road block. It was intensely emotional. And it seemed as though, there was an openness that could not be closed. I saw a young lady crack into the hearts of 4 individual uniform wearing men. Not all the police hearts were completely tainted; there was a flame within them that got fed. Officers were obviously well versed in stoic intimidation. But behind sunglasses they thought were too dark to see through, I saw eyes. I saw grown men squirm beneath the shear focus of will. Non violent penetration of the heart. I pray that they begin protecting the public interest and not Texas.

To my knowledge as of 3-17-03 5:30 P.M. No trees had been cut.

Sinner - if you have so much time on your hands that you can query into everyone else's use of their time, maybe you need to find a full, not part-time job. Rather than attacking when posts are added, why not deal with the issues. Actually, there is such a large support system for the forest defenders that many of their needs are donated by indivuduals and organizations. It continually amazes me that you are upset about a few insignificant taxes (that aren't being used up by the forest defenders) yet don't get upset about the amount of money PL sends back to Texas every month. Money that the County earned, but can't use. Note the number of logging violations, see the damage caused by the clearcuts and herbicides. Some folks can't even drink their own well water any more. Maxxam has turned PL into a bad neighbor.

According to San Francisco news broadcast. The two sits that were removed yesterday, were regained today.

suggestion : Activists should get more still cameras or even disposable , check out local thrift shops always $1 cameras to be found, also tape recorders, mini disc recorders to document any of PL workers get out of hand!

Update on the situation as of 1:51pm on Tuesday 3/18/03. Remedy was seen in the Jack In the Box Corporation on Broadway in Eureka eating a meat burger, with cheese. She then went into a liquor store and purchased some Bud Ice in 40 oz bottles from the corporation Anheiser Busch. Clearly normal life on the ground has gotten the best of her.

Wren has now been released from her incarceration in the county jail. When the Corporate News interviewed her on the steps of the courthouse, she said that she's: "...going to Disneyland! But first I's going to Samoa Cookhouse Corporation n' gittin' me some fried chicken, then droppin' the kids off at the pool, if ya know what I mean!!" Everybody is urged to meet her at Disneyland to discuss next year's sit in the Tree of Life.

So, am I to understand that you are a profesional activist? That's great!

Remedy, I guess your just a washed up pooh head tree sitter now. Not even able to make your goal of 1 year in Jerry. What will you do with your life now protest rebuilding of the north coast railroad or development of the bay. Why not be the first person in a mass movement from humboldt county and take all the other tree sittin fools with you and head back to where you came from. The quality of life in Humboldt county has been lowered since you and people like you came into the picture. Isn't there only about 1 to 2 % of the old growth redwoods left? (I already know the answer) Then there are these damn kids going to college and getting educated in how to think for themselves--whats there problem, they should be in support of progress. And progress is making money, which equates to concepts like "forrest management" and timber harvests. (Since when was the forrest so stupid that it needed o so intelligent humans to manage it?) Progress towards no more old growth. I guess thats progress if you think of preservation as a form of the stone age. Stone age cave men is what I have heard forrest defenders called, so I guess capatilistic America is right. Clear cutting old growth and second and third growth and generations to come is the most progressive path to take. Recycled wood and alernative products couldn't be progressive because they're brand new ideas as to where logging has been around since the beginning of the human race. So why the hell not, lets make some quick cash in the name of progress, american pride, capatilism and all the greatness of the economies need to consume and waste--cut those living fossils down and be a proud patriotic consumer. (Or whatever the hell I'm trying to say.)

Its about gosh darn time the Paciffic lumber company is starting to stand there ground, instead of bending over backward for EPIC. I'm an older ex-hippie, middle aged old lady now, and had not ever gotten the full impact of clearcutting until our trip to Freshwater just a couple of days ago. We were delighted to be able to provide t.p. and water to a few of you up those trees. While we can't afford much, let us know and we will try to help. If I were 40 years younger, I might be up there with you! Keep up the fantastic work for our planet, and please let us know how we can help...Phoenix or Luna in other incarnations

I used to live in Humboldt County. Worked and went to school there. Got married there. Lived amongst "hippie environmentalists" and "redneck loggers". Looking back on it now, I realize a few things.
You can EarthFirst! until your crap comes out green, but you ain't gonna save the planet. Conversely, you can clearcut until the rapture comes, but you ain't gonna stop treehuggers.

Unless you've faced losing your way of life, you can't really relate to the plight of people in the timber industry. Unless you're an idealistic green zealot, you'll never relate to these folks.

Sitting in a tree, firebombing a Starbucks, or joining the Green Party will not do a damn thing in the overall scheme of things. Putting a "Wipe Your Ass With a Spotted Owl" bumper sticker on your truck, forcing treesitters out of their perches, and voting Republican won't get you too far either.

The thing about toilet paper is that they can use hemp that grows in 3 months not 500 trees. Why isn't industrial hemp used: that's a whole can of worms.

There is something special, a history, about the old trees, compare them to the small pines that replace them..I think the treesits are a very admirable job, I would do it if I felt like I was pure enough.

It is illegal to cut down any tree with a diameter greater than 20 inches anywhere on Federal or State land in California. Don't pretend like you guys don't know that. You are infringing on private property rights. If the government can't tell you what to do with your body why can you tell us what to do with our land? Answer: you can't. At least not yet. You've already got all the national and state forests. Can't we have our own property? Greedy bastards.

thank you for all of the pictures, first off. secondly- im a little disturbed that most of these people adding comments are so furious at the "treesitters". to the disturbing- all we (including me) want is our sacred forests to be protected. one person wrote- you have all oyur state forests, why cant you leave our property to ourselves?" hmmm, interesting, in the last 200 hundred years, 97% of our ancient forests have been destroyed. and now you want the other three percent. it doesnt sound to me that we need to get off "our private property", you should leave the remains of what was so much a part of our lives. think about it, you are ruining the ecosystem, amazing trees that with take hundreds of years to regrow if they make it that far, and peoples history. the trees have been here for such a long time, they have a history behind them, great wisdom that the forest can teach us if we let it. so the next time you say- its just a couple of big trees--whats the big deal, re-think your statement!
