The IDF punishs whole communities (through bulldozing of houses and curfews that cause food shortages)for the actions of individuals. This form of collective punishment is a form of ethnic cleansing. The account i read, from the AP, said that she fell to her knees as the bulldozer raised a mound of earth beneath her. It also said that the driver made eye contact with her before he rolled over her. Regardless it's obvious that the driver knew she was there, its not like she threw herself under it at the last moment she had been standing there shouting through a bullhorn. This isnt the first time activists have been killed in gaza although i think it may be the first American. Anyone who believes the Israeli military line that this was an accident obviously hasnt been following the story.

If you look at the pictures, its obvious the driver can see she's there. And she certainly did not throw herself in the bulldozers way at the last moment.

Either way, it highlights the fact that a large number of palestinians killed are certainly not 'militants'. Houses have been demolished over deaf people who haven't heard the orders to get out. Old people have been crushed by the bulldozers. The israeli army treats everybody with complete callousness. They even shot two of their own security guards a few days ago, and look at the photos of that incident? The car is completely riddled with bullets. Is that really neccessary? They certainly didn't look before unleashing their murderous barrage.

This incident is another example of the lack of discipline and responsibility of the Israeli army. You can't give a bunch of kids guns and expect them to police a civilian population!!! The only reason these children have compulsory militiary service is because they are so naive, and will believe that they are out in the West Bank for legitimate reasons. And once they have been forced to become murderers, there is no turning back. Either keep going, or face the consequences of your actions.

This is Israel's problem. It has to keep pushiong forward with its terrible offensive. If it stops, it knows that it has a terrible price to pay for its crimes. But you can't push on indefinately!!! One day you will exhaust yourself, and the consequences will roll over you like that bulldozer rolled over the young lady who was killed. Better to stop now, and deal with the consequences in a construcitve manner, than suffer even more later. And at the end of the day, how bad could the consequences be? The Israeli's can make a choice between compromise now, or utter loss later. Either way they will survive, as always, but one way will lead to a lot less suffering.

It seems to me that your angry response to right wing proponents entirely contradicts the sentiments and objectives of peace activists. Try focuses more on emphasizing good instead of hating the bad. Your anger and haste makes you no better than those you contradict. Also, why didn't any of Rachel's friends push her out of the way. Obviously, they were there and saw that she was going to be crushed by the bulldozer. Why did they all just let her get run over. They should have thrown her out of the way and made sure that she didn't get run over because unfortunately she was not going to do so. I think that this was a tragic incident, but it could have been avoided. She should have realized the far greater goods she could have realized had she lived to achieve them. Instead, she chose to end her life in this manner. I think that it is unfortunate because it could have been prevented. Truly sad story.
The thing that first strikes me is that she obviously knew she was doing something quite dangerous to begin with. Not that she deserved such a fate, but it's quite intellectually dishonest to blame the driver based on ad hoc descriptions from emotional biased co-participants.
The second is that I don't see any posts by opponents to her activism reacting with glee over her death. This in stark contrast to the posts by dozens of leftist activists when the CIA agent was killed in Afghanistan by a grenade explosion. I am right of center on most political issues, and I certainly don't take any joy in her death.
Maybe some in this movement could take a bit of an example from this.

I agree that anger and hatred will not make the situation any better. However, I am an ISM activist. I have been out there, protecting the Palestinians from a murderous occupation, and have seen the callousness of the Israeli soldiers first hand. My first post was angrier than I would normally be, because her death strikes so close to my heart. I didn't know her, but I very easily could have. In fact, that could have been me.
She was so brave, and died for doing something so responsible. And I understand better than many others how her death will not be in vain. She is a martyr of a different kind. A martyr for a movement of peace springing up all around the world. She died trying to stop the oppression of a people she had never met. A response to my last post mentioned Mother Theresa. A lady who sacrificed her whole life to helping people she didn't have to. Rachel sacrificed her whole life to help a people she didn't have to.

I'm not sure where everyone on this thread is coming from, but it's obvious to most Americans that the actions of both the Israeli Military and the Palestinian Terrorist Suicide Bombers are mostly deliberate. I dare say it does not seem so in the case of the bulldozer and the activist.

Facts: The Isreali state would not exist as it does if US taxpayers weren't used to sustain it. The Isreali state is the only state in the Middle East with nuclear weapons.
