Six Palestinians were ordered to strip to their underwear at an Israeli army checkpoint in the Gaza Strip yesterday after which they were forced to march back and forth in the rain before being taken away in a jeep , according to witnesses.

The incident, which took place near the Kfar Darom settlement in central Gaza, unfolded in front of hundreds of people waiting to cross the checkpoint and was partly recorded on videotape by a Reuters television crew. More than 200 Palestinian vehicles were lined up at the checkpoint when the six men pulled up in a yellow van and were ordered by members of the police anti-terror unit to disrobe.

The IDF Spokesman defended the action as "an arrest operation" justified by suspicions that the six were concealing explosives. "There was a real suspicion that they were carrying explosives on their bodies, and thus, there was a need to conduct a thorough search, as shown in the pictures," the IDF said.

The men were forced to undress near the van and walk one at a time toward troops positioned near an armored vehicle, the witnesses said. One of the six was then sent back to retrieve their clothes after no explosives were found in them.


A soldier dragged the clothes through a puddle on the rain-drenched tarmac before letting the men get dressed, the witnesses said.


Opposition leader MK Yossi Sarid (Meretz) demanded an explanation from Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer about the incident. "If these were the orders, they are disgraceful and unacceptable," Sarid said.

I couldn't help but be amused by the photograph of the driver lying face down on the pavement with his pants down! I think that photo, along with the article regarding the incident, is an obvious reason why a segment of our society should stop wearing pants that are many sizes too big. Maybe the driver's pants were already hanging around his knees by his own choice!
