March 5 (BCN) — Hundreds of Stanford students are uniting today in the national "Books Not Bombs" one-day student strike, joining millions of students across the U.S. to show opposition to the possible war.

With more coming.

I've never encountered anything that can take the joy and adventure out of a good book as quickly as a class on it.
by another realistic youth
I have always "liked" these "strikes" in support of another "teachers cause". I too remember during my schooling days, taking of many days off in support of some bullshit cause.

If these so called activist students really want to add some weight to their argument, have a protest during their free time, i.e. (non-school time.) Then it would show that their is a genuine desire among students rather than merely the same old tried and true practice of teachers offering students a "get out of class free card", as long as you support our agenda, hardly independent thought.

I personally enjoyed watching one of these young activists saying how important it was for students to express their opinion, yet not once, during an interview with national television did she ever express her opinions.
by someone who cares
i find it quite funny how many people feel the need to criticize protesters based on numbers, intentions, hair color or whatever. 99.5 % of people in the world are likely to sit on their asses regardless of what's happening in the world or right in front of their faces. then again, they aren't the ones likely to cause social and political change.
the 99.5% you speak of are what we call free-riders. some are for the war, some are against it, some were sick, some were stoned, some had mid-terms, some don't care either way. that's fine. it's their choice.
so what about the millions that did show up? i assume you think they have no conception of society, politics, justice, or anything else, right? of course, that wisdom belongs only to those who say how high when Bush says jump, right? get a life freakshow...put together your own protest if it means that much to you. of course i know you won't because pro-war advocates never get off their asses like anti-war activists, untill of course there's an anti-war protest and all you sorry people get on Indymedia to criticize the protesters. have a good life.

The war is not for the People of the United States of America. This is George W. Bush's war, and it is a selfish war. It will not create more jobs, it will not help our economy, it will not fight racism, drugs, or violence, it will not bring peace, it is not supported by the UN, and it is not going to end quickly. I am proud of the pictured students at UC Berkeley, and Stanford because they know the war is wrong, and they are standing up to it, and they are against it. To kill so many people, to ruin so many lives is awful. I pray for the president and his administration, because God is not pleased with them right now. Bush can't be called a man after God's own heart or a doer of His will if he goes forth with this imperialistic war. It is cruel, and it is violent. It is the path of the terrorist. END THE WAR, SAVE THE PEACE!

It is really great to see the young people of this country standing together for justice, in the face of a government controlled media that would like to label these true patriots and defenders of freedom as unpatriotic. Those that blindly wave the red flag and support their country, right or wrong, do the greatest disservice to their country and the world. I applaud these students for their courage and intelligence.

Bush is a joke. He's stupid and I am sorry that the supreme court gave him the white house. He is the worst president this country has ever seen. The tax cut did not work and now that idiot is killing innocent people in Iraq. I am sorry that we sent our troops to Iraq to fight for that dumb ass bush. I would never send my child to fight for nothing. If Iraq had nukes or chemical weapons they would have used them by now. Saddam is bad but Bush is worst. Bush and his daddy can kiss my ass. Bush is a worthless piece of shit and he is ruining our country.
by thank goodness there is some sanity out there
It is so great to know, that although apparently much of our country are red-necked hicks, that there are those that have the guts to stand up to this nonsense. Bush is an awful leader, who has opinions (or rather can move his mouth vocalize daddy's ideas) that he cannot even intelligently defend! In my opinion he can be paralleled to Hitler for all that he is accomplishing this term. I especially love the "Operation Iraqi Freedom." Who the hell said anyone was being liberated, except Bush's ego! My heart goes out to all he innocent civilians running for their lives from Bhagdad...I cannot even imagine what they are going through. What kind of a leader founds his legacy on obliterating an entire third world nation! His fundamentalist right-wing beliefs will kill us all.

Good for all of you that care enough about humanity to protest this war....
by Another SENSIBLE Youth
I worry about the student who commits her/his self to an education where they chose to capitalize on a so called "getting-out-of-class-free card". As a University student I greatly value the time I spend in class, and find a dilema in the choice not to attend class, for any reason. I urge "another realistic youth" to refrain from projecting your eagerness to get out of class onto the students who have shown a genuine committment to peace. Just because you saw any "just cause" as a means of getting out of class, does not put the myriad of dedicated college students in the same mindset as you once held. My Friend, Please Rethink Your Paradigms!
FYI This anti-war demonstration was held on a SATURDAY.
SOCIAL JUSTICE NOW! DOWN WITH IMPERIALISM!
