Peace Fresno resolution to stop the war

by Mike Rhodes (MikeRhodes [at] attbi.com)
Tuesday, March 11
An anti-war resolution has been placed on the agenda for the Fresno City Council meeting, Tuesday, March 11, time to be announced. Peace Fresno is working on getting support from council members for the resolution. With a motion and a second from the council, the resolution may be addressed by members of the community. Bring your signs of support for the resolution (no sticks, please keep signs "Fresno friendly" with emphasis on our community's needs) and let us know if your organization and/or individual wishes to address the council so that we communicate several local issues. Of course, the mic is open to all. Let's fill the chamber! Call your council member at 621-8000 and ask her or him for support of the resolution or write asking for her/his support for the resolution at http://www.fresno.ci.gov .

As of this writing over 100 cities across the United States have endorsed similar resolutions. Any questions or concerns, please contact Vincent Lavery at (559) 439-0821 or respond to this email. Members of Peace Fresno are currently working on Concilmembers Boyajian and Sterling to be sponsors of the resolution. And let us remember that Mayor Autry and Fresno's former Secretary of State held a press conference on February 15 (the day of our giant peace march) supporting the Bush policy on war in Iraq.

In peace and friendship,

RESOLUTION: Peaceful Solution to the International

Dispute with Iraq

DATE: February 28, 2003

TO: Members, Fresno City Council - Fresno, California

FROM: Peace Fresno
985 North Van Ness
Fresno, California 93728
Tel. (559) 439-0821
Camille Russell, President

Whereas , there is no substantial proof of an imminent threat from the sovereign nation of Iraq to the national security of the United States of America, that would justify war, and

Whereas, the result of such a war will probably result in a catastrophic loss of lives, including some from the Fresno area who have been called to serve in the United States armed forces in the Middle East, and

Whereas, the adverse impact on the economy of the United States by the diversion of capital resources for war and the reconstruction of Iraq and possibly the entire Middle East, will erode the ability of our city to meet and maintain an adequate infrastructure for services required for the people of Fresno, and

Whereas, over ninety cities across this nation have endorsed similar resolutions,

Therefore, be it resolved that the City of Fresno supports a peaceful resolution to the question of proscribed Iraqi weapons through the continuation of the inspection process of the United Nations and that the City of Fresno rejects unilateral and preemptive use of war against the sovereign nation of Iraq.

Peace Fresno:
