-00:00 Dennis Bernstein: "STREAMING introduction: interview with Ramzy Baroud, author of Searching Jenin, Eyewitness Accounts.. and excerpts from last nights presentation by Greg Palast.
-00:55 Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert: "STREAMING Bush unleashes the rhetoric of democracy and freedom.. says democracies do not engage in murder.. oops! see: Israeli death squad activity, now promised even in the USA.. and see: how Israeli *supports* democracy in the occupied territories.. UK parliment rebels against Blair and his support for Bush's oil war.. US terror alert eases.. FBI arrests 20 more.. another Canadian official, Charlotte Paris, forced to apologize, caught on a live microphone, muttering, 'Damn those Americans I hate those people!'
-05:24 Dennis: Israel's seige of the West Bank going from terrible to nightmarish.. "STREAMING now w Ramzy Baroud, author of Searching Jenin, Eyewitness Accounts, preface by Noam Chomsky.. Ramzy: the Israelis were the ones who started saying that hundreds may have died in Jenin, that there was a *massacre* in Jenin.. and then, with the help of the US media, turned around and smeared the Palestinians for repeating those assertions.. and the other day, Aljazeera TV (link2) (link3) caught Israelis beating and stabbing to death two Palestinians.. Dennis: no mention in the US media.. Ramzy: I know CNN must know about this, but they refuse to report on it.. about the 24-hour curfews that Palestinian towns suffer.. 868 days.. not allowed out for days at a time, not allowed to buy food, or go to the hospital, kids can't play outside.. Israeli loudspeakers say 'we will shoot you'.. Nablus under permanent curfew.. no water, no milk, people are dying in their homes.. a murderous campaign to destroy the spirit of the Palestinians.. one friend, has a two and three year old, the three year old does not remember life NOT under curfew.. Dennis: you grew up in a refugee camp, saw your parents being abused?.. Ramzy: yes, it will live with me forever.. I lived in the *Red Square*, so-called because of all the people that were killed there.. one young man killed, our neighbor, I was hiding in the bedroom.. people tried to protect the body from being kidnapped by the Israelis, they hid the corpse in the room were I was.. a lot of my friends became militants.. I talk to my dad even now, he says this person was killed, that person was killed.. I remember when I threw my first stone at an Israeli tank.. but I am not violent, my dad called me 'the prophet', because I was so quiet.. one day the Israeli settlers and soldiers came together and attacked the girls' school next door.. we heard screaming and shots being fired.. I stood in the middle of the schools, a decisive moment in my life.. I grabbed my first stone and ran to protect the girls.. and I threw my first stone.. once you feel that you are capable of standing up for yourself, nothing is ever the same.. then as I ran away, many shots were fired at me, a friend shot beside me.. my father beaten in front of me many times.. Israeli soldiers would come at night, take people out, use them as human shields.. my parents taken out many times, made to clean graffiti.. my father always refuses to talk about it.. I saw him punished, spit at.. at one point, my mother was beaten by the Israelis in the street while we were tied [cries].. but many people used to say, my family was *lucky*.. no one killed, no bones broken, no long stay in jail.. we were the envy of the camp..
-31:28 now excerpts from last night's presentation by British journalist, Greg Palast, in Berkeley.. "STREAMING Dennis: You know, I think the world of Greg Palast.. but Florida elections chief, Katherine Harris, has called Greg Palast 'twisted and maniacal'.. in the White House they say 'we hate that SOB'.. Michael Moore says Greg is a 'very courageous jounalist'.. Baltimore Weekly, says 'no one has investigated the *Bush Clan* as closely and lived to write about it'.. now here's Gregory Palast, author of The Best Democracy Money Can Buy.. [wild applause].. Greg: well then, let's twist;).. at least Katherine Harris didn't say I was wrong.. Wow, we really should thank Dennis Bernstein and Flashpoints Free Speech Radio and KPFA.. about GW's record in the Texas Air Guard during the Vietnam War.. became a pilot, so good the Viet Cong didn't dare attack Houston.. but he had to take a test, out of a 100 possible, he scored 25, one point above *too dumb to fly*.. was it affirmative action?.

Kristen: the UN pulling out of certain areas, too.. in Rafah, in the very south, "manthe UN come in after the people are killed, after the homes are destroyed.. I've seen whole families wandering the street with one small box labeled UN.. if the Israelis were abiding by UN resolutions this wouldn't happen.. Israel needs to be held accountable.. homes demolished, 1700 in Rafah alone.. normally when people are killed, their homes are taken, and Israel takes the land, bulldozes the houses flat, so they can say later that nobody lives there.. the people will eventually die, no food, no shelter.. Dennis: the Israelis "oldsay they are firing only at combatants.. Kristen: they are firing at kids, at schools, at ambulances, at all infastructure.. everyone has the right to defend themselves against invading military.. these people are defenseless.. it is amazing that Israel gets away with saying these things.. -00:42 beseiged city of Nablus, in the occupied West Bank.. 3:23AM Anne: another day of terror here.. we had to run.. a tank.. Druze.. enormous amount of shooting.. demolished more houeses.. three jeeps surround our ambulance.. 3:27 This is the sound of two tank two feet from us.. the tank cannon pointed directly at us.. followed by two hummers.. .. here a peaceful city square.. they just torched a car.. the sound of children throwing small stones at a jeep.. 3:33: yet more tanks, more hummers, more armored cars.. this is terrorism gone mad.. now they have started shooting, someone else calling for an ambulance.. none left.. just children here throwing stones.. just one side attacking, totally unarmed people.. an APC approaching down the sidewalk, no way we can get away from them, especially when you see the Druze.. killer carriers.. three jeeps, two APCs.. unbelievable.. I don't know how many tax dollars we are being menaced with.. later: we are trying to escort three people home.. they are really menacing us now.. the gun swivel.. 3:54am: the tank up opposite, swiveled its 80mm cannon at us, 20 feet away.. it is very very scarey.. now the APC come back, rifles.. 3:58am: we are a small group of people standing on the corner with our hands up.. being menaced by rifles.. terrorism inflicted daily on the people of Nablus.. now w Anne.. all of us in Nablus are not doing well.. although the Israelis left for a couple hours today.. home demolitions continue.. Dennis: an ongoing onslaught, correct?.. Anne: yes, since Sunday, except for one small break.. I heard the Israeli commander address arrested people in a school (what he said to them).. about the father and son walking holding hands.. the child was shot, the father not shot, but as he leaned over his child he had a massive heart attack, and fell over his child.. they refused to let us pick up the bodies until ten oclock this morning.. a ten year old boy.. IT IS JUST TOO MUCH, TOO MUCH.. HOW MUCH MORE OF THIS TERROR CAN WE TAKE?.. the ambulance driver has been working everyday for two months.. takes 70 people or corpses to the hospital every day.. Dennis: why did you get involved?.. Anne: I found KPFA and got involved with Palestine.. I am in the most determined city in the whole West Bank.. the freedom fighters here have only old rifles.. no match for armored weapons.. but the fighters all left Sunday, and the last six days the Israelis have been attacking children.. the name of the ten year old who was killed was Akmed.. the hospital full of wounded people, no one complaints, not the doctors or the wounded.. almost unimaginable, their strength..

Israeli children firing on children throwing stones.. we were fired on by a tank.. we shouted Stop Stop.. the tank pointed it's cannon at us.. later: we are pinned down I can see down a tankd 80mm barrel.. 11:06PM 3 taxis carrying old people children to safety, three taxis shot.. 11:22PM DENNIS, I WOULD LIKE AMERICANS TO KNOW.. THIS IS WHAT YOUR TAX DOLLARS ARE DOING.. OH MY GOD!.. THIS IS A NIGHTMARE.. PROTEST! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!.. 12:47: I was just shot in the leg by an Israeli soldier, the ambulance driver shot in the hand.. I went around the corner to pick up the pregnant woman, and they shot at me again.. I am 65 years old, with grey hair, obviously an international and this is new, they are shooting at us.. they are shooting down the alley.. we are still trying to get the pregnant woman.. later: I am come from the hospital, we are facing the soldier who shot us before, amazing to see this young soldier threatening the lives of so many people.. we have shown we have nothing, hands in the air, and still he says no.. later: we finally got the pregnant woman out.. they were shooting the big cannon from the tank.. a milk drink, we've been here five hours..

Dennis: the Israelis trying to kill off all leadership?.. and steal all the land they can before a possible ceasefire?.. a lot of resistance now?.. why are the people shooting at the Israelis soldiers?.. Amani: a very normal reaction.. they are coming, and the people out in the street to resist.. we are under occupation, this is our land, and we want it back.. this is the situation.. a very basic right of human beings to fight for their own land..

-01:20 "STREAMING Dennis: in the last weeks millions of people have stood up.. today Israel attacked Gaza.. following the assassination of 8 resistance fighers and six others.. now w Amani of a NGO micro loan program for poor women.. Amani: in the last few weeks, not new, but more intensive.. tanks come in, start shooting everywhere, destroying houses.. the Gaza Strip is very crowded, houses ontop of each other.. when they destroy one house, other houses are also destroyed.. destroying houses, workshops.. (Amani gives more details).. Dennis: we're getting reports that there will be a major assault on Gaza City.. one of the most densely populated areas in the world.. the children are suffering.. how are your kids?.. Amani: I have three.. now I can hear shooting, the situation all over.. are they used to it?.. no, they are looking forward for peace.. saying to their parents, what kind of protection are you giving me, you can not protect me.. I took my children to other school, a bit safer, but others cannot.. especially Rafah and Khan Yunis.. all these houses demolished, and the children, saying we want to be free, we want our land back.. Dennis: you left the apartment building?.. Amani: yes, to be safe.. I can hear the tanks and helicopters coming closer.. Dennis: are you going to a bomb shelter?.. Amani: we don't have such things in Gaza.. like a big prison camp.. checkpoints closed.. took six hours in the evening, sitting in the car six hours.. we are trying our best to continue to help women.. micro loans.. but now hard to move around Gaza Strip.. smaller and smaller.. about the kinds of projects Amani makes loans for.. small markets, groceries, food.. everyone looking to find food for their children.. clothes.. Amani: about what is happening here.. a year ago, I opened a door, found nothing behind the door.. 30 houses destroyed at one time.. a house used to have 10 people, now have 20.. Dennis: Sharon to use War on Iraq to ethnic cleansing.. Amani: everywhere we are talking about that.. talking how can we prepare.. Gaza and West Bank the same.. (sound of gunfire mixed with noise of wind and rain).. Dennis: right after that interview it got a lot worse, attack helicopters and tanks attacked Gaza..
-18:50 Dennis: now w Barbara Lubin of the Middle East Childrens Alliance.. Barbara: Amani and her husband are good friends of mine.. "STREAMINGone project of hers is embroidery.. "Barbarawhen I was there two years ago, I stayed with Amani in her highrise.. on the 17th floor.. we had to flee in the middle of the night.. ran to her in-laws on the 3rd floor.. it is totally horrifying what is going on.. I am very frustrated.. somehow it doesn't resonate in the world.. we are working with the CDC, sending three folks to do a study on the nutritional needs of the children there.. houses are being mowed down, sometimes with people inside.. a 67 year old woman in Nablus shot in the head, soldiers stopped their truck and got out and killed her.. I know her, a wonderful woman, had nothing to do with politics.. sitting outside her home, sewing in the sun, shot in the head.. my heart goes out to all the people in Gaza, the children are screaming, everyone running.. no shelters, no place to run, no place to hide.. Dennis: (reads) a ridiculous AP wire copy.. 'Israeli incursions into Gaza are relatively common.. destroying the homes of suspected militants'.. Barbara: there probably lives a wife, children, two sets of grandparents.. not just a *militant*, but an entire extended family dies.. about Ziad Abbas.. he called me, he tried to come back, went to Sweden.. back to NY, arrested, stripped, held for three days.. he went to a meeting in Rome, got very ill, bleeding ulcers.. now in a hospital in London.. only got a visa for three days.. has had 11 blood transfusions.. they say he has to go back to Sweden.. a true story of Palestine.. to fly from one country to another.. sickening, and heartbreaking.. Dennis: you have heard Ziad Abbas on this show.. Barbara: a remarkable wonderful human rights worker and journalist.. he has no country.. there is a problem in this country, many people are afraid to speak.. critical of the policies of Israel.. "Barbara the Palestinian and Israeli children pay the price of that silence, of that looking the other way.. every year that this goes unattended to, more and more anger festers, more and more young people turn to violence.. we are the peace movement.. I think there is a change starting.. but still a wall goes up.. one school called me, they don't want the issue of Israel and Palestine to be brought up.. Dennis: about Israel flaunting the UN resolutions, and the US supporting that.. Barbara: many people are afraid to speak out, afraid there will be called *anti-Semitic*, or a *self-hating Jew*.. KPFA is one place where you can hear the truth about the Middle East.. but to be pro-Palestinian is to be pro-justice and to be pro-Israeli too.. Dennis: Greg explores the connection between Bush and the bin Laden family.. I just saw the Roman Polanski film, 'Piano', about the Holocaust.. when I saw the Warsaw ghetto fighters, I was reminded of the Palestinians.. Barbara: many of those Jews who survived decided not to go to Israel after the war, didn't want to live in a religious state.. Barbara: I brought over three kids from Dehaisha Camp to live with me and go to SF State.. I hear them talking to family in Palestine.. telling them, we have electricity, we have hot water, no curfew.. all new, used to being locked in their homes, no being able to go out, no electricity, no hot water.. these three guys were with me at the demonstration the other day, but say 'what about us'? our war has been going on for years.. this is a Pacifia Network pledge drive period, make a donation today.. call 510-848-5732 or 800-439-5732.. Dennis: Blair says he has to follow his sense of *morality* more than the citizenry.. John: launching 800 cruise missiles against a sick and broken country is not moral to me..
-12:45 Dennis: "STREAMING one of the most outspoken opponents of a new Iraqi war is "Nelson South African leader, Nelson Mandela.. spoke of a potential global holocaust.. Mandela: it has been 57 years since the last world war, because of the United Nations.. but Bush is now undermining the United Nations.. acting outside.. the UN the idea of Roosevelt and Churchill.. Rush and Blair undermining an idea of their predesesors.. is it because the Secretary General is black?.. are they saying we are they only superpower in the world now, we can do what we like, we are special.. unspeakable atrocities.. they don't care for human beings.. 57 years ago, when Japan was retreating on all front, the dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.. killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people.. effects still killing people today.. aiming not at the Japanese, but at the Soviets.. killing innocent people like that is terrorism..
-17:35 music break
-18:20 Dennis: last Saturday "STREAMING Flashpoints led a Pacifica national teach-in against the war.. excerpts: (live audience).. today millions of people around the world said no to war.. yesterday Colin Powell greeted with disbelief at the UN.. the French ambassador greeted with applause.. "Jeremynow to Baghdad with Jeremy Scahill.. Jeremy: people here expressing cautious optimism over Blix's new report, also listening to Powell.. most people still believe war will come in the near future.. tens of thousands of Iraqis demonstration in the street today.. many many people are very afraid... afraid for their children.. about reports that the US has inserted special forces into Iraq already.. raising tensions, fear of sabotague.. about the international activists in Baghdad, from all across the globe, slowly pouring into Baghdad.. to serve as human shields.. trying to prevent a war.. Dennis: Powell met with silence at the UN.. do the people of Iraq know the world is rising up to support them?.. Jeremy: a million plus people on the streets in Rome, in London.. this is not about democracy or freedom of speech, it is about oil.. but the attitude here is still one of panic.. great concern for their children.. they know of the report of 3000 missiles hitting Baghdad.. they have been throught the Iran-Iraq war where the US had its dirty hands all over, and throught the Gulf War and the sanctions.. this administration has several people who don't care about the use of (weapons of mass destruction) when they are used against certain people.. like Rumsfeld.. like Powell.. not people who have a track record of honesty.. Dennis: what will you do if the bombs start falling?.. Jeremy: we want to have access to phones, to hospitals, to ordinary Iraqis.. like the Iraqis we are people too.. stockpiling goods.. the three of us have formed an affinity group.. you depend on your brothers and sisters to keep you sane.
-31:07 Dennis: now to Washington DC to Anas Shallal, the founder of a new Iraqi peace group, "STREAMING Iraqi Americans for a Peaceful Alternative.. Anas: I've spoken to relatives.. their mood from panic to denial.. the people quite upset.. those who can have moved outside Baghdad.. but they have jobs, lives.. Dennis: bombing the cradle of civilization?.. Anas: when Clinton sent 23 cruise missiles on Baghdad.. one killed the most famous Arab woman artist, Laila al-Attar.. Iraq used to called Mesopotamia.. Baghdad full of artifacts.. about the so-called Iraqi National Congress, and the Iraqi National Front.. pushing Bush to keep the sanctions.. disheartening to look at this group, they don't have any support inside Iraq.. but Bush has a plan for Iraq: putting General Franks in charge and putting US agents in charge of every minister.. convicted of embezzlement in Jordan, had to smuggled out of the country in the back of a car.. US typically replaces one dictator with another shady character.. more info, see: Mesopotamia Cultural Society.
