The bus cartel, responsible for the transportation
needs in Rio de Janeiro State - Brazil, has found a
way to break the law which permits seniors citizens to
ride for free on the buses.
In a great number of buses the turnstile, that for
years was placed at the back of the vehicle, now has
been moved to the front near the driver and the
passenger entrance has changed from the back to the
front door. Non paying passangers will not use the
turnstile and are obliged to stay before it.
Senior citizens, not been charged for the ride, are
then obliged to stay in narrow front part, because
they have to pay in order to pass the turnstile. There
is only 4 or 5 seats in this part of the bus.
The results can be seen on the photograph. Seniors,
that aren’t able to sit down, travel the whole trip
standing and squeezed like sardines in these small
spaces.
Sometimes, paying passangers, occupy the seats that
are reserved for aged persons. Many times, the bus
driver, do not allow the elderly passangers to take
the bus, claiming there is not enough spaces.
