I saw no police loosing their control. Only protesters failing to follow instructions often baiting the police. Protest are good, conflict with the Police agency are unnecessary. You do not need conflict with the police agency to get your protest point across or in the media.

We have on videotape a police officer lunging at a peaceful protester, striking her to the ground. My friend reached to help her and was struck in the leg by police wielding a baton as a baseball bat. They had us peaceful marchers herded in like cattle and refused to let us leave the 8-9 block of Market street even after they ordered us to disperse. Who do they work for again.... ?

feel free to obey the laws that have been set forth, laws that have been legislated by those representatives you have chosen to elect. additionally, you have chosen to live in a country where there is a tacit agreement to obey those laws or be held in check by our own system of checks and balances manifested as the judicial system and law enforcement. choose to break those laws and you're choosing to break the social code, and the law should be enforced. you don't like it? leave america. choose another home. or, instead, change the laws by choosing those representatives who will be effective in doing so. until the law is changed, however, it is your responsibility to obey it. these punks chose to break the law and damage the properties of others...they sowed their own punishment, here. additionally, anybody who chooses to infringe upon my rights to go to work or to walk in the streets unobstructed are being "hippie"crites by not allowing me to manifest my rights...your right to protest comes at a cost of my rights? um...no. you obstruct my way and i will remove you from my path, no matter how much it might hurt. you self-serving "indies" need to listen to less modest mouse and start reading something else other than david sedaris.

Okay - working with the elected representative government idea. What should voters do when their representatives refuse to go with the position supported by the democratic majority? Should they just keep voting until the unaccountable undemocratic representatives finally change their position.. or what. What if they aren't motivated by the fact that the majority of the population doesn't support their decision. The populace should still stick with letters and voting? What if we aren't just talking about zoning laws, but lives are at stake, and individual rights are being taken away

This is precisely what is happening here. In France, 87% oppose the intervention in Iraq. 80+% of the British oppose the war, but Blair is choosing to override them. In the US, a majority opposes a unilateral approach.
So, basically, democracy has failed. What to do.

Ill leave the country if you send me the money. We can set up a wire transfer. You only got a choice in this country if ya got money.
by Wake Up
The idea that the USA is a Democracy is false. It is most clearly a Plutocracy. The rich rule. The "facade" of democracy is slipping, people are starting to wake up and they rightfully and justly are angry. The rich (and thier corporations) are in control of the media, they own it. They exert control on our so called " representatives" through lavish bribes called "campaign contributions" and through lobbyists, and PR firms which create high profile mass-media campaigns (advertisements, editorials and propaganda) to bamboozle, misinform and distract the public. As they did to stop real Health Care reform as well as to justify all their Wars of aggression and corporate imperialism.

An honest citizen of this country who educates themselves about "our" system of government and how it works and it's bloody, corrupt history will realize that "democracy" is a myth and "plutocracy" is the correct term for our system of government. Then instead of leaving this country, they should stick around and help change things for the better (which will probably require some sort of social and political revolution) in the spirit of Thomas Jefferson and other revolutionaries.

What has Iraq ever done to the USA? Nothing. The argument that we must disarm them before they attack us is ludicrous. The Iraqis are not amassing armies on US borders nor threatening the US with nuclear bombs. The USA is doing this to Iraq They have a right to self defense. We have no right to invade them. Like Hitler had no right to invade Eastern Europe. I'm sure Adolf told his patriotic followers that they were threatened by the hordes of Slavs and Jews, that he was attacking them first before they could attack Germany. We can see that Hitler was a madman, in hindsight, but at the time, prominent American capitalists including Henry Ford, and Prescott Bush (Granddad of George W.) supported and helped finance the Nazis.

American Plutocracy is quickly resembling the fascsim of the late 1930's. All patriots (and matriots) should rise up against this before it's too late.

I've been asking repeatedly what people recommend over 'real', what do you propose?

Also, besides it being a corporate product, what is bad about it? Right now it's basically free. I'd love to see an opensource anti-corporate player come along. Maybe there is one. Can you name one?

"
Real Networks are absolutely and total sheisters. There is a free
version, it is very hard to find on their website. After the install,
they also make you think you have to enter a huge profile of personal
information. You can actually just hit cancel and it works just fine.

Their player is still intrusive, by default even with disabling all the
notifications you can, it still pops up periodically with 'Sponsor
Messages' and 'Special Offers'.

It has only gotten worse and worse over time. Interestingly, (if I am
recalling correctly) they have recently released the source code to
their video codec. Perhaps some alternative players will come available
soon."

Also, more for those who have trouble simply getting it:

" If you don't already have it, you'll need the RealVideo player, they make it hard to find the totally free one -- ignore anything about "14-day free trial" and giving a credit card, with persistence you should be able to find it. As of Nov. 14, 2002 you can find a link at top right to "FREE RealOne Player", going to that page, in the bottom right there's "Download Free RealOne player only", then you have to choose the basic version, then you have to follow the installation instructions. Sorry it's a corporate product!"

just to let you know - it works for me.

Maybe you need to actually view the tape. If you'd like to come visit me, I'll show you the stripes on my back. And, no, I'm not violent, I had no weapons, did not break any laws, did not say anything to the police, did not hurt anyone or anything.

Beating an innocent person is against these laws you're pretending to defend. Aren't you heroic.
by outsider
what do you mean 'abusing a girl'??? that could mean a lot of things... some of which would be call for a big gigantic lawsuit.

you guys need better camera work, and you need more training.
by kight
Thank you so much for getting this on tape.

hey -
not sure if you're still looking for something besides real. If you are, you might try the nsv codec - it's by nullsoft (makers of winamp). I'm pretty sure it's free to stream with - plus, if you have a dedicated broadcast stream (not as much of a hassle to maintain as it sounds), you might be able to get them to list it. The video aspect of the codec is based on the vp3 codec, which has been open-sourced. Audio is mp3. Only hitch is that since it's nsv, mac users probably won't be able to use it. Speaking as a mac-user, I say fuck 'em. Also - isn't Windows media encoder also free? Much as I hate to admit it, wmv really is a great video format. Again this kind of screws the mac-users, but as I already said... screw the mac-users. Anyway, hope this helps.

a less corporate alternitive format is xvid or divx. which yields higher resolution at a smaller size.
