Valentine’s Day Rally
By Jonah Zern

In just 16 days we organized an amazing event yesterday! Hundreds of people gathered and demanded "Books not Bombs, Schools not Jails". How did we get hundreds of people in just over two weeks?: An amazing commitment of so many people and the support of so many groups, a powerful movement of people who want deep change in US and worldwide policy and an Oakland community that came together to make yesterday's rally happen, from bringing food, making free copies, donating paper, confirming permits, endorsing, posting, donating, and speaking out.

Listening to the coverage of the rally in New York City today I hear calls for "Books Not Bombs". We are part of spreading a message that we cannot stop a war on Iraq without addressing the war being waged on working people, people of color and poor people of the United States. We cannot stop the war on Iraq and go home and forget that there are 2 million people in prison in the United States, that one in three black males between the ages of 20 and 29 is in prison, jail, on probation or parole. We cannot deny the conditions of poverty, lack of health care, lack of quality education under which people of color and poor people live. We cannot deny the role that the United States government and US corporations play in the oppression and abuse of the people of the world for their own economic gain and power.

We must see the connections. We must see that the media dehumanizes black people, Latino people, the same way they dehumanize Iraqi people and Muslim people. We must realize that the people of the world are our brothers and sisters, as are the people of every inner-city community in the United States. We must build a global community that does not justify sweatshops through "competitive advantage", does not justify a war on a people because of the belief that one human life is more valuable than another.. We must recognize Einstein's quote that one cannot simultaneously prepare and prevent for war, and Martin Luther King Jr.'s statement that unless their is a change in the malady of spirit in the United States that we will be marching against the same war for generations to come.

We must ask why there is such enormous wealth in our community right next to such immense poverty, and we must demand that it be distributed or we must seize it ourselves. Now is a great time of change in the world. It is essential that we chose to speak out and take action, for peace, equity, environmental preservation, and justice. We must be willing to take brave and bold actions, and we must demand nothing less than equity. We must search for truth and shun those who deny it for their own personal gain. Now is a time to speak out!

Hey Jonah, excellent writeup, wondering if someone
can upload some pics too (i just dropped by and saw
you all briefly there..)

by What about racist Zionism???
Jonah, I applaud your spirit and efforts however, you failed to mention the massive US funding of Israel's ethnic cleansing and persecution of the Palestinian people, and this has been going on covertly under the cover of lies and cover-ups and collusion with the pro-Israeli government and mainstream media for decades!

Quite the oversight on your part! I wonder why Jewish Americans can get so worked up about the rights of Blacks and Latinos here in America, when they enjoy so much more equality here than Palestinians do thanks to anti-democratic, apartheid Israel, which does not even have a constitution!

Israel's official policy is that 92% of the land is for Jews only! Non-Jews are discriminated and marginalized in a myriad of ways. Israel has defied over 70 UN Resolutions. Israel is the 16th richest country in the world.

Yet racist Israel receives about 40% of the US foreign aid!

In fact, Israeli delegates are trying now for an additional $12 billion on top of the $6 billion it already received this past year in "guaranteed loans" (meaning they don't have to pay them back!) Yet poor third world countries are not forgiven their loans.

I wonder why you neglect to bring to the forefront the injustices that the Palestinians suffer because of Zionist Israel which is propped up with our US tax dollars?

In fact, the looming war on Iraq is actually more of a war for Israel's "best interests" than for the US. Oil is only the secondary issue.

Resolving the Palestine-Israel conflict in a fair, humane way is the number one issue to address right now.

The injustices suffered by the Palestinians far ourweigh any injustices suffered by any ethnic group in America. Even in Iraq, at least no one is trying to force the Iraqi people to leave their ancestral homeland!
by Jonah
I'm kind of disturbed by this comment. I am definitely outspoken about the rights of Palestinean people and I made a speech to 1,500 California teachers at our national meeting and to the point where I have been called an "anti-Semetic. I agree that Jews need to talk about racism towards Palestineans, but I feel insulted by the fact the idea that because I am Jewish and don't mention Palestine in every piece I write that I am somehow complicit to the masacre ocurring.
Jonah
by Hello
You are probably a great guy, and I do admire much of what I read that you do,
but it's not because you are Jewish but because you are AMERICAN that I expect you to speak out on every single occasion you can with regards to ending US support of Israel's ethnic cleansing and persecution of the Palestinian people. The rally you had on Valentine's Day would have been a PERFECT opportunity to advocate that Americans contact their political leaders in the Congress and Senate to demand that all US aid to Israel be contingent on becoming a true democracy with completely equal rights for all regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or sex, including the Palestinian refugees must be allowed their right to return to their ancestral homeland of Palestine-Israel as is their right according to UN Resolutions, International Law and world opinion. Also the original injustice of the UN giving away Arab land that was not theirs to give away to Jewish supremacist Zionists from Eastern Europe must be addressed honestly and fairly, and reparations must be made. If you haven't already read "Origin of the Palestine-Israel Conflict" by the Jews for Justice in Palestine-Israel, I urge you to do so at http://www.cactus48.com.
It does seem to me that Jewish Americans in particular have a "blind spot" about the injustices that has been continually happening to the Palestinian people with the aid of our US tax dollars by Israel, and I suspect that is why you did not mention the Palestine issue in your rally.
It seems to me that the Palestine-Israel conflict should obviously always be included in any rally that is anti-war and anti-racism!
Im strongly proPalestine but would disagree that it is driving (or even influencing) the possible war in Iraq. Iraq is about US power in teh region but Saudi and Kuwaiti oil is much more important than Israel to the US government.

If the left should be condemned every time they forget Palestine in a speach, why not accuse the Left of forgetting more exterme conflicts. The number of deaths in Liberia, the Ivory Coast and the DRC have each surpassed in a year the total dead in the entire Palestinian conflict. The wars in Ache, the Southern Phillipines, Chechnya, Xianxing, Nepal, Colombia, Kashmir, etc... are also on larger scales than the conflict in Palestine. Israel does get enough US aid that one should focus more on it as a conflict but to treat other conflicts as unimportant and Israel as the ONLY focus ignores greater horrors in much of the rest of the world.

There is nothing wrong with individuals and groups focusing on Palestine as their only issue since people need to do that in order to be productive. There is nothing wrong with always bringing Palestine up to get the Left to focus on it. But you should not condemn every speaker who does not mention Palestine since by overstressing the cause ones support for it seems almost irrational and antiSemetic and ultimately that hurts the cause.
by hello
Like I said "GET RID OF YOUR BLIND SPOT" and go back and re-read the post I wrote explaining why the Israel-Palestine conflict is the number one conflict in the world! Re-read it and re-read it and re-read it until it sinks in!
by R2J
"Everyone knows that the Palestine-Israel conflict is the number one conflict driving this war on Iraq"

this escalation of the current war against iraq isn't the point. the point, as nessie so clearly points out, is that capitalism and the social and economic relations that it fosters, creates, and mandates, needs to be overthrown. the issue of israel and palestine is part of the larger whole methinks.

oh, and by the way, would you have heard what i had to say any more clearly if I HAD USED CAPITALS? i didnt' think so.
by be real
Oil may be part of it, but why the rush in now to take it militarily? There's plenty of oil in other places, and if the Palestine-Israel conflict was addressed fairly and that thorn in the side of the world was taken out and healed, why then I am sure that we could negotiate great deals on oil with Iraq, and the rest of the Arab world for that matter.
By the way, notice how now the debate between Bush/US government and Iraq (and the UN) has gotten down to the missiles Iraq has that could reach Israel??????? They can't reach the US. But they can reach Israel. Hmmm.... gee, do you think I may have a point about how ISRAEL is the main reason that this war on Iraq is looming? I think so, and so do alot of other clear-headed people of all religions, races, political persuasions, etc.. That's because it is so obvious!
It's not that I'm saying it's OK to bomb the hell out of Israel but I AM saying that Israel needs to stop its persecution and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people and allow equal rights in Palestine-Israel, like a REAL democracy, regardless of religion, race or sex.

OTHERWISE THERE WILL BE ENDLESS WAR. No justice means no peace.
by be real!
Oh, and I suppose it was "unfair" to single out South Africa when they had apartheid!

Be real. We must single out Israel for it's racist, anti-democratic apartheid regime which is committing ethnic cleansing (since day one of its existence) and the US is funding this campaign of terror against the Palestinian people.

Yes, we must single out Israel NOW! And every day until it becomes a true democracy for all regardless of religion, ethnicity or sex and the Paletinian refugees are allowed THEIR right to return.
by by the way
did you notice how even in "Bowling for Columbine" Michael Moore was too intimadated by Zionists to include anything on the US-backed ethic cleansing Israel is committing against the Palestinians??

It's like not talking about the elephant in the room!

He talked about all the violent countries, but that glaring omission of Israel...backed with US weapons...

Guess he didn't want to offend Zionist Israel!

But it's time we all spoke out! To hell with the predictable accusations of anti-semitism! It's not anti-semitism! It's anti-war, anti-hate, anti-racism,anti-hypocrisy, anti-lies, anti-double-standards, anti-intimidation, anti-human suffering, that what it is! Get it??????
by Hille
yeah... there is a strong logic in focusing criticism on countries where the US plays a strong role - this is why it makes less sense to hold a demonstration criticizing Iran, when the US opposes Iran anyway, for instance.

But there are lots of countries that the US has involvement in that get a small fraction of the press of some of the hotspots. the US has been funding a war in Angola for decades, and this helped prop up the South African government, and has produced a higher death toll than in Israel, yet how much do you hear about this: http://www.hrw.org/reports/1989/WR89/Angola.htm
The US also killed the elected leader of the Congo, propped up the dictator Mobutu sese Seko for decades, and thus contributed to the high death toll from the fighting from the resulting instability when the dictator died.

If you know how you can rig this site in such a way that you can read all the hidden posts. Interesting all the things that have been hidden of late. Used to be all that was hidden was just things that were bad language or porno pics, but now they hide many excellect responses and articles that destroy their arguments. Some who write here claim they want debate and responses, and many of you that have asked have received such, they just were hid from view. Good chance you were waiting and never knew that.

Actually, changing it so you could read the hidden stuff was pretty simple. If you just go to your friendly neighborhood hacker, he could probably show you how to do it. But even then, if someone really wanted to break in, etc.

by IndyBay is Soft on Zionism & Israel
No doubt about it! OK, so they're not run by screaming banshee psycho Zionists, the sort you would encounter on the freeper bulletin ( I didn't last very long there!).

BUT Indymedia editors often censor, edit, hide and otherwise suppress many articles that are anti-Zionism that are merely the truth. For example, they refused to post an article about the Israeli military history professor who made the statement that Israel has nuclear warheads aimed at all the major European cities. I believe the prof's name is Martin van Creveld or something like that. This is just one example.

Unfortunately the truth offends shows Israel and Zionists and by relation, Jews, in a very bad light. For example, even in Indymedia, they will not print public statements both bid Laden and Saddam Hussein have made explaining why they hate us--- a prominent factor is racist, Jewish-supremacist, Zionism and Zionist Israel that has been conducting an ethnic cleansing campaign against the Palestinian people since day one of Israel's existance.

"Why do they hate us?" They have told us, but no mainstream media nor even some alternative media lets us hear them. Even British papers carry more truth, and these statements from the extremists bin Laden and Hussein.

No, instead, we get insipid explanations like... "They're jealous of our freedom! Of our money!" In case you haven't noticed, Palestinians are dying to be free of Zionist tyranny funded by the US.

This covering up of the truth makes it easy for people like nessie to "forget" that this "war on terrorism" is centered squarely in the Middle East and the thorn in the side that is bleeding the Middle East is Zionist Israel's ethnic cleansing and persecution of the Palestinian people. That's why Palestine is still the issue. Israel is already pummelling the Palestinians, and now they want to utilize the US to pummell defiant Iraq. The oil is just the frosting on the cake.

========================================
Confirmation bias refers to a type of selective thinking whereby one tends to notice and to look for what confirms one's beliefs, and to ignore, not look for, or undervalue the relevance of what contradicts one's beliefs. For example, if one believes that during a full moon there is an increase in accidents, one will take notice when accidents occur during a full moon, but be inattentive to the moon when accidents occur during other times of the month. A tendency to do this over time unjustifiably strengthens one's belief in the relationship between the full moon and accidents.

by Israel gets "free ride"
Israel gets "free" everything: it's called "guaranteed loans" in the billions of US tax dollars. "Guaranteed" means they don't ever have to pay these loans back---- but somehow, sub-Saharan African countries are expected to pay back their much smalller loans but HUGE to them, as they are ravaged by AIDS and poverty and civil strife.

Israel uses this money to continue its ethnic cleansing campaign against the defenseless Palestinian people who are starving and have no army. This constitutes WAR CRIMES. Israel does this to one way or another get rid of indigenous Palestinian people who are not JEWISH. If they are Jewish they can stay. Yes, the Palestinian Jews are allowed to stay without persecution. NON-JEWS are persecuted, marginalized and dispossessed-- to fullfill the Zionists' dream of a "Greater Israel" for Jews only. It's SICK.
by Cost of Israel to US taxpayers
http://www.alhewar.com/Curtiss.html

And don't forget: "guaranteed loans" is another word for free handouts-- Israel does not have to ever pay back "guaranteed loans". By the way, Israel already has the 2nd strongest army and is the 16th wealthiest country in the world, and Israelis get more of our tax $ than we do per capita.

Isn't there something VERY WRONG about all this?
by Israel has NEVER paid back loans!
That is why they are called "guaranteed" loans.
by economics 101
They are called guaranteed loans because they are co-signed by the U.S. government. Just like if your parents co-signed your car loan because you don't have the credit to get it on your own. The guarantee refers to the fact that Israel is guaranteed to get the loan, which they promise to pay back with interest. If they default on the loan, then my taxes pay for it. Otherwise, the principal and interest go to the bank. So far, Israel has not defaulted on loans, mainly because their GDP is greater than all Arab countries combined.

What do they teach you kids in Berkeley, anyway?

Like an overgrown, spoiled child who is a mass murderer and hides behind his parents' influence and money. Israel has NOT paid back any loans to the US. Our tax dollars against my will pay for Israel's atrocities against the Palestinian people. Ethnic cleansing like in Bosnia. Israel will someday have its day of reckoning, and the sooner the better. And American wil have to pay back the Palestinians too. THAT is something I will be more than glad to see my tax money go towards. NOT racist, aparheid Israel.

by Union Bank
When are the zionists going to sue the Bush family for holocaust repatriations?

by Israel always "needs more time"
Have you ever noticed how Israel always "needs more time", not to mention money?

For example, for decades now, Israel has been biding its time, keeping the Palestinians in a hellish limbo between statehood and citizenship of Israel, because it "need more time" to make sure it's "secure".

The real gameplan is to drag out the oppression of the Palestinian people to take more and more of the Palestinian Territories--- as the Palestinians either die or leave "voluntarily" or are threatened with expulsion or to use the Israeli politicians words "transfer". Notice how "cleverly" Sharon says he doesn't plan on building anymore of the illegal Jews-only settlements in the Palestinian Territories, he only wants to "expand" them. What a joke! There are so many illegal Jews-only settlements now on illegally confiscated Palestinian land, that now Sharon wants them to expand to fill in the "empty" spaces, thereby taking more of the Palestinian land illegally.

Notice how Israel never pays back its so-called "guaranteed loans". Not one loan has been paid back yet. No, instead, Israel constantly asks for more and more, billions of dollars on top of the billions of dollars it already receives, even though it is the 16th or 17th weatlthiest country in the world and even though it gets at least 3 times per capita what even American citizens get from our own tax dollars.

It there no end to this money pit? No end to standing by and watching Israel defy over 70 UN Resolutions and run roughshod over the defenseless Palestinian people with Made-in-the-US tanks?

When are we the American people going to mobilize massive protests against US aid to racist, apartheid Israel's ethnic cleansing campaign against the Palestinian people that began on the very day Israel was immorally created with the all-European UN gave away Arab land that was not theirs to give away to Eastern European Zionist Jewish supremacists?

How can we let Israel get away with its murderous, racist gameplan?
by Jim
The twentieth century saw the movement of tens of millions of refugees in connection with two world wars and the founding of dozens of new nations. Millions of Indians, Pakistanis, Germans, Frenchmen, Japanese, English, Jews, Arabs and dozens of African tribes left or were driven out of their former homes. Of all these groups only the Palestinians remain as refugees. There are no more Jewish refugees from Iraq, Russia, Yemen or Libya. There are no more German refugees from Poland and Hungary. there are no more Hindu refugees from Pakistan. Why are the Palestinians the only ones left festering in camps now 55 years later? He're a hint - why wasn't a Palestinian state formed in the West Bank and Gaza from 1948 to 1967 when these lands were controlled by Jordan and Egypt? The answer is that the Arab world hates the Palestinians and uses their suffering for domestic propaganda and geopolitic gain. Arabs support Palestinian terror because they know it will keep the war with Israel going strong. Arab dictators, monarchs and generals (there are no democratically elected Arab leaders) use images from this war to distract their populations from their own curruption and decay and justify continued repression. These Arab leaders also know that continued war with the Palestinians will weaken Israel. Unfortunately, Arafat has become a puppet of his people's enemies. It is only when new Palestinian leaders not beholden to Egypt, Syria or Saudi Arabia arise that there will be a chance for true peace in the region and an end to the grotesque spectacle of third and fourth generation refugees living in "temporary" camps.

Since you are spamming ever thread that criticizes the eugenically motivated cult of zion, "Jim", perhaps you can find the time to answer this question:

When are the zionists going to sue the Bush family for holocaust repatriations?
by ugh
Nice gutter we have here.

Israel's gameplan is to continue to exist. Israel is currently not even close to 1% of the middle east. Israel currently has control of land that it won in a defensive war against arab invaders. Israel already gave the MASSIVE sinai back to egypt in return for peace, which egypt gave. Israel made a peace agreement with jordan, and jordan has honored it. Whether Israel should give anything to the palestinians at this point is debatable, considering the massive number of palestinian lunatics (including the leadership) who still seek israel's destruction.

You ranting loons who scream about evil zionist conspiracies need therapy. Israel's goal is to exist, whether it does so by keeping land it won in war or giving it to its neighbors in exchange for a true, lasting peace is the only question.

Seek therapy, you nuts. Israel isn't going to hurt you. Israel wants to sit there without being attacked, like any other normal nation.

Go on, froth at the mouth some more with your insane ranting zionist conspiracy crazyness.

by Moshe
When are the zionists going to sue the Bush family for holocaust repatriations?

When are zionists going to answer the questions instead spruking fallacies?
by then get lost, ugh
This is just the beginning of the ranting by the American people that is coming to a head against Israel's murderous racist ethnic cleansing of the indigenous Palestinian people!

It's a strong undercurrent this is getting more and more mainstream by the day thanks to the internet and alternative media and peace & justice eye-witness activists!

By the way, that's extremely twisted thinking a few posts up to claim that the Arabs hate the Palestinians! Maybe the leaders of some of the bought-out-by-the-US Arab countries are indifferent however the Arab people are totally behind the Palestinians, as are most people in the world except for Zionist Jews and misinformed (by the Zionist-dominated corporate mainstream media) American people, but like I said, this too is changing.

Fortunately, NOTHING stays the same. Israel can't hide behind its lies of being a democracy anymore(unless you count a democracy for JEWS ONLY as legitimate which is about as illegitimate and undemocratic as as democracy for white, Christian men only!) and things WILL change. You can count on that!

Israel is regressing further and further from civilized democratic society on its present course, and there will come a time, the sooner the better that it wil have to be transformed just like every other civilized democracy to a true democracy with equal rights for all including all the Palestinian refugees who have the right to return to their ancestral homeland, according to UN Resolutions, International Law and world opinion.

By the way, have you noticed how Israel always bites the hand that feeds it? That gets very tiresome too.
For example, now Zionists want to get rid of the UN, which unfortunately gave away Arab land that was not theirs to give away to Eastern European Zionist Jews for a Jewish supremacist state necessitating the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people since day one of Israel's immoral creation in 1948.

Now Israel defies over 70 UN Resolutions, and shot to death UN worker Ian Hook in Palestine, when he used a cell phone. Israel also blew up over $300,000 worth of food that was meant to go to feed starving Palestinians, saying the warehouse was used by terrorists.

Look how Zionist-run US and Israel are now afraid to be subjected to the same standards all the other countries in the UN are subjected to with regards to war crimes.

No wonder then that now Zionists in America and Israel are now questioning the legitiamacy of the UN!

These Zionists will stop at nothing to further Israel's racist, murderous agenda.
by terror buster
Everytime another Arab in the US is arrested as a terrorist, support for Israel goes up. Everytime a suicide bomb goes off, support for Israel goes up. Everytime a green-haired hippie punk marches for Palestine, support for Israel goes up. Everytime an Indymedia loon howls about how Jews destroyed the WTC, support for Israel goes up. America loves Israel - and the more marxists, foreigners, Arabs, skinheads and assorted malcontents you attract to your cause, the more American will love Israel.
by you just wish it!
Too bad for you--- Americans are turning against Zionism, as it is blatantly racism. We Americans are anti-racism, therefore we are anti-Zionism.
by True american
American are anti-racist - thats why they love Israel and recognize that those who howl about "racist zionists" and shout "death to israel" are the true bigots. Thats why no elected official above berkeley dogcatcher publicly opposes Israel. Thats why anti-Israel rallies are limited to a few marxists, muslim fundamentalists and skinheads - groups far out of the mainstream.
by Zionism is RACISM
Even the UN said so (now wonder the Zionists don't like the UN anymore! Wah Wah!)

Even read the Lonely Planet's guidebook to Israel and the Palestinian Territories: there's a whole chapter about the racism inside Israel( page 35 +)--- it's appalling.

Not to mention how Israel is a Jewish supremacist apartheid state where only Jews have completely equal rights. Notice how Zionists like writer Thomas Freidman says Israel is a Jewish democracy--- yeah, right! Ha ha. I guess that does sound better than a "democracy for JEWS ONLY".

If you think Americans like Jews better than anyone else just because they're Jewish, you're a racist, and you're wrong.

A Budget truck was pulled over in Oak Harbor, Wash., last Tuesday near the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station and found to have traces of TNT on the gearshift and traces of RDX plastic explosive on the steering wheel, Fox News has learned.

Traces of explosives were also found on one of the truck's two occupants.

The FBI, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and local police are all investigating.

Government officials said the roadside stop was so close to the naval air station that military personnel took part in the initial arrest and naval intelligence has also been involved in the subsequent investigation.

Shortly after midnight on May 7, federal officials say local police pulled the vehicle over for speeding. Documents read to Fox News indicate that the driver and passenger told local police they were delivering furniture from California but that authorities doubted the story because of the early morning hour.

A bomb-sniffing dog first detected explosives on one of the men and inside the truck.
High-tech equipment was used later to confirm
the presence of TNT and RDX plastic explosive.

Documents read to Fox News indicate that both driver and passenger were Israeli nationals. Investigators say a roadside check of the national database of immigration records indicated that one of the men had not entered the country legally, and the other was in violation of his visa. Both men were taken into custody for immigration violations.

At 7:30 that morning local police were notified that the BATF and FBI had tested the truck and found traces of explosives on the steering wheel and gear shift.

Officials say no other charges of been filed against the driver and passenger and an investigation is ongoing.

Authorities say records for the Budget truck do not indicate any recent rental for the purposes of transporting explosives, which would require special permits.

TAMPA - Muslims expressed fears for their safety but appealed for calm as investigators tried Saturday to determine whether a Seminole foot doctor accused of amassing weapons to attack mosques and Islamic schools was acting alone.
``If you're afraid, stay home,'' said Mohammad Cooper, a Muslim leader who traveled from Lakeland to attend an afternoon gathering and news conference at the Islamic Society of Tampa Bay Area Mosque.

``But do not hurt innocent people. You arm yourself with the Koran.''

Authorities stumbled upon an astonishing array of weapons inside the town home of podiatrist Robert Goldstein, 37, Thursday evening after receiving a complaint that he was arguing with his wife, Kristi, 28.

After coaxing Goldstein out of the home, Pinellas County deputies discovered about 20 homemade bombs, a pair of rocket launchers, dozens of high- power rifles and an antipersonnel mine. [!]

They also retrieved a three- page battle plan that laid out in intricate detail a mission to blow up what appears to be a local Islamic educational center. The writing includes at least the first names of two other people.

JDL pair charged in bombing plot
A lawmaker's offices and a mosque were targeted, U.S. alleges.
By Laura Mecoy -- Bee Los Angeles Bureau

LOS ANGELES -- The confrontational chairman of the Jewish Defense League and a follower were charged Wednesday with plotting to blow up a Culver City mosque and the offices of Rep. Darrell Issa, a San Diego congressman of Arab descent.

Irv Rubin, 52, and a member of the militant group, Earl Krugel, 56, were arrested Tuesday after a confidential informant delivered the last component of the bomb -- 5 pounds of explosive powder -- to Krugel's home, U.S. Attorney John S. Gordon said Wednesday.

FBI agents said they uncovered the plot after the source, a JDL member who had committed crimes for the group in the past, told them of the bombing plans and agreed to wear recording devices to meetings with Rubin and Krugel.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Victor Kenton ordered Rubin and Krugel held without bail Wednesday afternoon, saying they posed a danger to the community.

September 11 nightmare ends for two illegal Israeli aliens
By Uri Ash

Ro'i Barak [paid some money for an airfare and] left for New York 16 months ago to earn some money. [!]

Like many [poor] young Israelis, the 23-year-old from Upper Nazareth moved furniture [in the United States] to make a living [illegally].

On September 11, Barak was in Ohio on a job. He and his partner, Moti Butboul, 26, from Rechasim, headed toward Chicago, from where they had planned to return to New York.

On the way the next day, however, they were stopped by a police officer in Pennsylvania for a routine inspection, and were eventually sent to jail. The two were released to Israel only last week, while five of their co-workers are still under arrest in the United States.

At the time they were stopped, the policeman held them for a few hours, after which another squad car arrived followed by four FBI agents. Barak, speaking from his parents' home, said he does not know what prompted the policeman to call the FBI - perhaps their foreign accent or the previous day's arrest of their five friends who worked for the same [Mossad front] moving company in New York. He said the FBI may have been tracking their truck after their co-workers' arrests.

Five Men Detained As Suspected Conspirators

Eight hours after terrorists struck Manhattan's tallest skyscrapers, police in Bergen County detained five men who they said were found carrying maps linking them to the blasts. The five men, who were in a van stopped on Route 3 in East Rutherford around 4:30 p.m., were being questioned by police but had not been charged with any crime late Tuesday.

However, sources close to the investigation said they found other evidence linking the men to the bombing plot. "There are maps of the city in the car with certain places highlighted," the source said. "It looked like they're hooked in with this. It looked like they knew what was going to happen when they were at Liberty State Park."

Sources also said that bomb-sniffing dogs reacted as if they had detected explosives. The FBI seized the van for further testing, authorities said.

Israel's Role: The 'Elephant' They're Talking About
By AMI EDEN

FORWARD STAFF

"It is the proverbial elephant in the room," wrote liberal columnist Michael

Kinsley in the October 24, 2002, edition of the online journal Slate.

"Everybody sees it, no one mentions it." Kinsley was referring to a debate,
once only whispered in back rooms but

lately splashed in bold characters across the mainstream media, over Jewish

and Israeli influence in shaping American foreign policy. In recent weeks, in
fact, the Israeli-Jewish elephant has been on a rampage,

trampling across the airwaves and front pages of respected media outlets,

including the Washington Post, The New York Times, the American Prospect, the

Washington Times, the Economist, the New York Review of Books, CNN and MSNBC.

For its encore, the proverbial pachyderm plopped itself down last weekend

smack in the middle of "Meet the Press," NBC's top-rated Sunday morning news

program. Many of these articles project an image of President Bush and Prime
Minister Sharon working in tandem to promote war against Iraq.

Several of them

described an administration packed with conservatives motivated primarily, if

not solely, by a dedication to defending Israel. A few respected voices have

even touched openly on the role of American Jewish organizations in the

equation, suggesting a significant shift to the right on Middle East issues

and an intense loyalty to Sharon. Still others raise the notion of Jewish and

Israeli influence only to attack it as antisemitism.

The key moment on "Meet the Press" came when host Tim Russert read from a

February 14 column by the editor at large of the Washington Times, Arnaud de

Borchgrave, who argued that the "strategic objective" of senior Bush

administration officials was to secure Israel's borders by launching a

crusade to democratize the Arab world. Next, Russert turned to one of his

guests, Richard Perle, chairman of the Defense Policy Board, a key advisory

panel to the Pentagon.

"Can you assure American viewers across our country that we're in this

situation against Saddam Hussein and his removal for American security

interests?" Russert asked. "And what would be the link in terms of Israel?"
It was a startling question, especially when directed at Perle, the poster

boy — along with Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz and Under

Secretary of Defense Douglas Feith — for antisemitic critics who insist the

United States is being pulled into war by pro-Likud Jewish advisers on orders

from Jerusalem.

But Russert is no David Duke, nor even a Patrick Buchanan. He

is generally regarded as a balanced, first-rate journalist in sync with the

zeitgeist of Washington's media and political elite. If Russert is asking the

question on national television, then the toothpaste is out of the tube: The

question has entered the discourse in elite Washington circles and is now a

legitimate query to be floated in polite company. In three recent opinion
articles, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd fired

off one-liners claiming that Bush's conservative aides were guided simply by

the need to defend Israel.

MSNBC talk-show host Chris Matthews insisted that

Israeli hawks are "in bed" with hardliners at the Pentagon and Vice President

Dick Cheney's office and suggested that at times Sharon essentially dictates

Bush's speeches.

The Washington Post supplied a less glib, more systematic attempt to

demonstrate an unprecedented political partnership between Sharon and Bush,

in a 2,100-word front-page story February 9 by Robert Kaiser, headlined "

Bush and Sharon Nearly Identical On Mideast Policy."

The story also included

a paragraph outlining a supposed rightward shift among American Jewish

organizations. "Over the past dozen years or more, supporters of Sharon's
Likud Party have

moved into leadership roles in most of the American Jewish organizations that

provide financial and political support for Israel," Kaiser wrote.

Just a few weeks earlier, in its January 25 issue, the Economist published a

lead editorial urging Bush to ignore "so-called friends of Israel who will

accuse Mr. Bush of 'appeasement' the moment he pushes hard for territorial

compromise."

The barrage of commentary on supposed Israeli interests in an invasion of

Iraq has triggered a powerful backlash of sorts: a parallel barrage of

commentary on the bounds of legitimate criticism of Jerusalem, American Jews

and Jewish officials working in the White House.

Several Jewish commentators

have recently written articles warning that subtle and not-so-subtle

antisemitic undertones permeate the new wave of anti-war criticism. In turn,

critics have charged these writers with unfairly playing the antisemitic card

in hopes of silencing opposition to the war.

So far, the main event in the parallel clash started with an opinion article

by Lawrence Kaplan, senior editor of the New Republic, that appeared February

18 in the Washington Post. The article suggested that the insinuations of

Jewish and Israeli pro-war pressure were reminiscent of Buchanan's claims in

1990 that only soldiers with non-Jewish names would be killed in a war being

pushed solely by Israel and its American "amen corner."

Kaplan, in turn, was promptly slammed by Slate's Mickey Kaus, who argued that

Kaplan had unfairly tarred critics of administration policy. Kaus offers some
convincing critiques. For example: Although Kaplan

acknowledged that it is "legitimate" to debate "how the Bush administration

has arrived at the brink of war with Saddam Hussein, and to what extent

Israeli influence has brought it there," he failed to articulate a clear

sense of how and when. Of course, Kaus could just as easily be faulted for
failing to address

adequately the potential damage done by pundits, intellectually sloppy even

if well meaning, who rush to break down longstanding taboos on bigotry even

as antisemitic conspiracy theories run rampant across the Internet and the

Muslim world.

Without crying antisemitism, one could easily find serious

shortcomings in several of the articles panned by Kaplan or defended by Kaus.

For example, Kaiser's shorthand evaluation of Jewish organizations glosses

over a commonly overlooked point: American Jews and Jewish groups

overwhelmingly supported the Oslo process prior to the outbreak of the

intifada. The muddled, undefined debate was on full display last week, when
Kaplan

squared off February 20 on CNN's "Crossfire" against the conservative

columnist Robert Novak, a longtime critic of Israel.

Novak attempted to repel

Kaplan's criticisms by arguing that he had never used the word "Jewish" or

invoked questions of "dual loyalty" when criticizing pro-Israel

conservatives. Kaplan countered that — contrary to Novak's claim — he never

used the term "antisemite" in his Washington Post column.

Their respective

responses were the same: You meant it.

Attempting to sort out the tangle, Anti-Defamation League national director

Abraham Foxman, in an interview with the Forward, outlined what seemed to be

a more constructive approach to the issue.

The first point, he said, is to accept as legitimate questions concerning the

pro-Israel leanings of administration officials — so long as such criticisms

recognize that the hawkish camp includes significant Jewish and non-Jewish

players. And, Foxman said, while it is certainly legitimate to question where

the Sharon government or American Jewish groups stand on the war, the thin

line is crossed by those who portray these entities as a shadowy Jewish

conspiracy that controls American foreign policy.

Others have noted that many Jewish hawks with ties to the administration,

including Perle, have advocated aggressive American action in defense of

democracy far beyond the Middle East, from Latin America to Southeast Asia.

In the end, Foxman said, while American Jews are sometimes too quick to

assume that antisemitism is at play, history has offered plenty of reasons to

be wary of debates over their influence on foreign policy. "It is an old
canard that Jews control America and American foreign policy,"

Foxman said.

"During both world wars, antisemites said that Jews manipulated

America into war. So when you being to hear it again, there is good reason

for us to be aware of it and sensitive to it."

Zionists wanted the same thing 50 and 80 years ago as they want now, a safe little Jewish state where Jews don't have to worry about being attacked just for being Jewish.

Jordan offered Israel a real, honest peace offer, and Israel accepted, and gave Jordan control of the massive Sinai, even though there is OIL in the Sinai. There has been peace between the two nations ever since.

Egypt offered Israel a real, honest peace offer, and Israel accepted. There has been peace between the two nations ever since.

There is ample evidence that Israel wants peace and is willing to make huge concessions to receive it, as evidenced by Israel giving the Sinai away, a MASSIVE chunk of land that would have served as a great buffer, and could have served as future homes once the land was cultivated (it's mostly desert, but it has oil, landing strips, and would have been extremely useful. It's bigger than israel, yet israel gave it away in return for peace).

Palestinians have offered Israel terrorist attacks, lies, and madness. Palestinians have waged an "intifada" against Israel. Israel has no choice but to kill those who are trying to kill them. Arafat should have taken the land for peace offer Israel made 3 years ago. Arafat should have locked up terrorists in the 90's when he had the power to do so and israel was not preventing him from doing so.

The "zionist agenda" is a safe home. But home isn't safe when the neighbors have sworn to kill you, so the only possible response is to take control of the neighbors and smack them around until the evil neighbors are gone and civil neighbors remain.

Zionism: 1) 19th century Jews, to varying degrees in different parts of Europe, have limited freedom. This ranges from not being able to hold public office or go to universities to living in walled ghettos and facing pogroms. 2) While the rest of the world is engaged in nationalism, Jews realize that they need their own right to self determination, a right that a huge majority of the Jewish people does not have. 3) Having been a diaspora community since the year 70, scattered around the world, Jews look to the home that they have longed for for 1900 years, the Land of Israel, as the place of this self determination. 4) Jews begin to develop the agriculture of this land, called by Mark Twain in the 1870s as one of the most barren, depressing places on earth, and cultivate an economy. 5) A modern state is formed.

This crazy anti-zionism ranting is lunacy.

Jews bought the land they moved to. No one got kicked out of palestinian/israeli land until the 1948 war. Arab countries teamed up to try to kill off the jews there and take over the land that jews had spend the last 100 years buying and moving to, and many arabs who were in israel supported the death of israel.

For all the hundreds of thousands of arab refugees from that and future wars, there were hundreds of thousands of jewish refguees from arab countries.

Israel accepted jewish refugees into it.

arab countries rejected most arab refugees.

instead, arab countries just kept waging war on israel. and finally they stopped, but palestinian leaders kept right on attacking.

As for your insane summary of zionism, jews had been discriminated against in many countries around the world, and were becoming extremely desperate. Country after country proved to be unsafe for jews at one time or another for a very long time, and finally, some powerful jews tried to figure out where the hell on earth jews could be safe from that happening. Zionism was founded by non-religious jews. It was about finding a safe home for jews. Have you studied history at all? Jews were horribly discriminated against in a HUGE number of countries. Zionism was a response, it was about finding a home SOMEWHERE, ANYWHERE, wehre jews could be safe. Many places were considered for this home, it wasn't necessarily going to be israel. At one point, UGANDA was considered. But israel made sense, since (1) it was where jews came from in the first place and (2) it wasn't an actual established country yet, palestine was a "land territory" and (3) in the late 1800's, when zionism began, there were very few people living in palestine/israel. Mass immigration of jews ANd arabs began in the early 1900's, though arab immigration was unlimited, and jewish immigration was limited. Even during the holocaust, britain often rejected jews trying to flee and enter israel, and forced many of them to go back to europe to die.

Zionism was a response to the world's treatement of jews. IT was about a safe home for jews. Some jews already lived in israel/palestine, and others from the late 1800's and all through the 1900's bought land and bought homes there, and moved there. It had nothing to do with "jewish supremecy" and the LIES some of you people want to make up. How the hell can any educated person look at the history of the world's treatement of the jews in the 1700's, 1800's, and 1900's, and not understand a simple desire to have SOME PLACE on this planet where jews living in europe and in hostile middle east countries could try to be safe?

Zionism was about finding a safe home for jews. Buying land in that place. Establishing a nation. When there's war, bad things happen and refugees occur, but the goal was not "war" or "supremecy" or any sort of crazy bad stuff. Take all your horrible lies about the motivations behind zionism and shove them.

As for some bad things some people who happen to believe that israel should exist have done, not every human being of any race, religion or movement is always going to be a good person, obviously some people suck, obviously some people do the wrong thing, and obviously not all elected (or non-elected) governments always do the right thing.

So, ponting out some bad things the israeli govt may or may not have done does not affect the big picture, that (1) zionism was a response to the world's treatement of jews and the recognition that jews needed some sort of safe haven, and (2) israel's main goal is to exist and be safe.
by Why Zionism is so creepy to most people
One sometimes, maybe even often, wonders what end is up and what end is down in the current state of world affairs. What is left and what is right? What do Democrats really stand for? What do Zionists and Christian Rights have in common? What do White Supremacists and pro-justice for Palestinian progressives have in common? Are the Zionists controlling American foreign policy? OK. Now THAT was a DUMB question. That is obviously true. The US war on Iraq has much more to do with Israel's security than America's security. It really has a lot more to do with insecurities about not being able to negotiate optimally with the Arab world for the best price and assured access to oil. This due to the fact that the US is supporting Israel's ethnic cleansing and persecution of the Palestinian people, and looking the other way, even while the Israelis steal even more and more of the Palestinians homeland from right underneath their noses.

Maybe nobody has all the right answers, but it's obvious that being "politically correct" has something to do with being "right" in America, yet really very, very wrong. And sometimes the "politically incorrect" can get some things quite right.

I'm talking specifically about the flap about the White Supremacists vs. the Zionists.

Both groups are racists, this is obvious. Zionists feel they have a right to a Jewish supremacist state on Arab land that was given to them by the UN when it was wasn't the UN's to give away in the first place. To achieve this goal of a Jewish supremacist state, Jewish Zionists, who thus became Israelis, have been committing ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people since day one of Israel's creation in 1948. This has been and is still now considered "OK" by Zionists and their unholy allies, such as the Christian Right, and the corporate thugs like those who just care about making lots of money on selling their military weapons.

People have thus far generally been very intimidated from speaking out against the gross injustices against the Palestinian people that our US tax dollars, for fear of being labeled anti-Semitic or worse. Although this is finally changing. The toothpaste is out of the tube and it's not going back.

Americans can obviously care deeply about the Palestinians' plight without beingat all anti-Semitic, although it's true that some people may actually be anti-Semitic.

The White Supremacists are most definitely anti-Semitic, but they are very mindful of what is happening to the Palestinians.

Why? Not being a White Supremacist myself, I can only guess. This is what I have deduced.

White Supremacists tend to be just as exclusive and suspicious of "outsiders" as Zionists are. White Supremacists advocate marrying only within the White Christian race, whereas racist Zionists similarly advocate that Jews must not marry non-Jews, as Elliott Abrams has asserted in his book, "How Can Jews Survive in Christian America" or some foolish title like that. Give me a break. Some Zionist Jews even make a distinction between the Ashkenazi (I almost mis-spelled it as Ask-a-nazi!) Jews as being preferable to marry over Sephardic Jews! Anyone can observe this kind of racist thinking when reading various Jewish bulletins and websites.

Let's face it: racism can happen in anyone. Most people are reviled by it, thank God. The problem is many people don't seem to notice the racism inherent in Zionism. Or they are just not being honest about it.

When a White Supremacist drops a remark, such as Trent Lott did when publicly wistfully recalling the good ole days of segregation, he got raked over the coals both in the mainstream media and politically.

Yet a racist Zionist such as Elliott Abrams gets appointed to head the US foreign affairs department in the Middle East, rather like assigning a fox to watch the chicken coop.

Therefore, of all the minority groups, it is Jews, especially, Jewish Zionists that worry the White Supremacists the most. And let's be fair. Many Americans of any race, religion or whatever may feel concern about the Zionist Jews. Because they see the immense power of Jewish Zionists, especially in the US government where they are bending laws to suit their narrow agenda to the detriment of non-Jewish Americans and the influence inside the mainstream corporate media to try to make this narrow agenda palatable to the American public, which up to now, they have been phenomenally successful in doing.

However this is changing.

Personally I know that many Jews do not support Zionism or Zionist Israel. But in many parts of the country, many Americans may only know of the Jews in the news who are mostly right-wing Zionists who are quite in charge these days, or at least equal partners in crime with the Christian Right and greedy corporate thugs.

Zionist Jews are giving the rest of their Jewish brethren a bad name. Yet it seems as if the majority of Jews seem to be complicit in their silence on the racist nature of Zionism. The Neturei Karta Ultra-Orthodox Jews are very outspoken of their rejection of Zionism and Israel. Apart from them, there are many Jews who are unhappy about what Israel is doing, and some speak out courageously, but most seem to prefer to just bemoan it amongst themselves and attend occasional rallies. Very few take bold steps like the group of 38 or so British Jews who held a press conference in 2002 to publicly renounce their right to return until the Palestinians also were allowed their right to return.

White Supremacists, possibly along with others who are not White Supremacists, probably think that what the Zionists are doing to the Palestinians who are mostly Muslim and Christian, is perhaps an indicator of what Zionists would like to do to anyone who is not Jewish or who does not support the Zionist agenda, even here in America.

No other minority group comes even close to weilding the kind of power, wealth and influence that the Zionist Jews do.

No other minority group manages to funnel billions of US tax dollars every year to their "homeland" be it Ireland, or any country in Africa, or Mexico, or the Philippines, just for examples.

Tiny Israel gets over 40% of the US foreign aid, which is far more than the entire sub-Saharan continent of Africa, Central American and South America combined. Major strings have to pulled to pull that off. All the loans are guaranteed loans that have never been paid back. Whereas poverty-stricken, AIDS-ridden Africa is expected to pay back its loans.

Up until lately, the mainstream Zionist-dominated media has been quite successful in keeping anything about the true history of the Palestine-Israel conflict out of sight, painting the Israelis as the victims, and the Palestinians as the intrinsically Jew-hating, crazed aggressors, rather tell than the truth of the matter: that the poor Palestinians have been subject to all manner of ethnic cleansing practices as the Zionists continually strive for their vision of a Jewish supremacist state, rather than share the land as equals with non-Jews.

The solution to this sad state of affairs is to simply acknowledge that Zionism is indeed racism and outlaw it from American domestic and foreign policies as other racist policies have been, thereby having no double standards with regards to equal rights for all, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or sex. This honest approach would be truly a progressive step towards a more peaceful world, based on mutual respect and consideration.

Change is necessary. Change is imminent. Let's embrace it with open hearts.

zionism only "gives jews a bad name" if you're an idiot who judges "the jews" as a group, instead of as indiviuduals.

Do you point out that the KKK "gives christians a bad name?" Probably not, since that sounds kinda silly. But scapegoating "The Jews" is what people are used to.

ANyway, to call zionism a desire for "jewish supremecy" is INSULTING, and IGNORANT. jews had been discriminated against in many countries around the world, and were becoming extremely desperate. Country after country proved to be unsafe for jews at one time or another for a very long time, and finally, some powerful jews tried to figure out where the hell on earth jews could be safe from that happening. jews got kicked around the world for 2000 years. things got really, REALLY bad in the 1800's and 1900's. zionism was the search for a safe home for jews, since such a thing was desperatedly needed for millions of jews across europe and the middle east (and some in africa). zionism materialized from the late 1800's through the 1900's, as jews steadily bought homes and land and migrated to jerusalem and tel aviv and the land that became israel. britain tried to prevent this by restricting jewish immigration, while allowing unlimited arab immigration, britain even sent tons of jews fleeing the holocaust back to europe to die, preventing them from entering israel so as not to annoy the arabs. but jews persisted, buying land and homes and building up a nation. while most nations are established by one overseeing nation, or none and just a struggle between people, israel was formed with the approval of the majority of the entire world, as per U.N. vote. Zionism meant to establish a safe home for jews, a jewish homeland, since the world's actions in the 1800's and 1900's proved that such a thing was unfortunately quite necessary. Anyone who opposes the concept of zionism is a sick pig. Debating current israeli govt policies is another story, as the vast majority of current israeli govt policies are a RESPONSE to what israel's neighbors have tried to do to them.

Should Israel ever get left alone, the stupid palestinians can have a second state (JORDAN takes up 75% of the land that was the original "palestinian mandate territory."

It's a war right now between Hamas and Israel. Palestinians are caught in the middle. THough, a sick amount of palestinians still support hamas and seek israel's destruction. That's what's kept them in this mess. They should call off their intifada and become sane, so israel can deal with them. But if you examine history and see palestinian's TROUBLED RELATIONS with their own arab brothers, you'll know that is asking a lot.

No. And Jews did not "seize" land and put people into ghettos. Jews bought land and immigrated over a 50 year period, building up a nation. No land was "seized" until arab countries teamed up and made war in 1948 to try to get rid of the jews. That's when refugees resulted and land was taken. But this occured on both sides. There were hundreds of thousands of arab refugees. There were also hundreds of thousands of jewish refugees from arab countries.

But israel accepted the jewish refugees. arab countries were the ones who controlled the west bank and gaza from 1948 to 1967, and all they did with the land during that time was kick 100% of the jews out, they did not give the palestinians a state, they did not take them in as citizens, they kept them right where they were and just tried to attack israel.

You highlight what israel did, while totally ignoring the actual balanced context of the situation.

Zionists ARE Jewish supremacists since from day one of Israel's creation they massacred hundreds of Palestinians and chased off about 800,000 Palestinians, the first of the refugees, which have never been allowed to return to their ancestral homeland as is their right according to UN Resolutions, International Law and world opinion.
It is NOT just a Utopian idea to think that people of all races, religions, etc. can live together with equal rights. Every true democracy allows for this. That's why Israel is NOT a true democracy--- it is a democracy for Jews ONLY--- that doest not qualify as a true democracy and it never will.
by are you deaf, dumb & blind?
In case you didn't notice, the KKK is completely a marginalized, fringe element that is widely condemned as racist by all, including most whites. But unfortunately, racist Zionists are actually in power right now and controlling US foreign policy! DUH! If you think this sits well with the rest of us you are wrong. Sure, there are still some clueless folks but dont' doubt this: Change is a-gonna come!

Wow, you people really are insane.

Zionism was the recognition that jews around the world needed a jewish homeland, because of the horrible treatment jews have received. It had nothing to do with "supremecy." You are loons.

by Looney Tunes
What's looney is your failure to see that Israel is a Jewish supremacist state, a racist, anti-democratic, apartheid theocratic state that discriminates mightily against non-Jews.

Just because the Jews were persecuted themselves in the past does not justify or make it OK for them to turn around and persecute others!

Also if they should have a true democracy instead of constantly lying and maintaining the complete falsehood that Israel is a democratic state. What a joke! Yeah, just like apartheid South Africa was a democracy--- NOT!

Ummm...actually, there are Muslim Arabs who are CITIZENS of Israel. They have the full right to vote and, believe it or not, there are MUSLIM political parties within the Israeli political system.

Ra'am, The Islamic Movement (Southern Branch), Mada (the Arab Democratic Party), and the National Front are some, just to name a few.

Instead of spouting the same old tired rhetoric, why don't you lefites ever do reaserch?

P.S. By research, I do mean reading something other than "The Elder Protocol's of Zion" or any of that other made up crap.
