Hotel employees sat watching the film in shock and horror several times before the FBI confiscated the video as part of its investigation. It may be the only available video of the attack. The Pentagon has told broadcast news reporters that its security cameras did not capture the crash. Velasquez says the gas station's security cameras are close enough to the Pentagon to have recorded the moment of impact. "I've never seen what the pictures looked like," he said. "The FBI was here within minutes and took the film." CNN's Jamie MacIntyre: "witnesses told me the day this happened that the plane -American Airlines Flight 77 - came in extremely low, but I'm not sure I realized how low it was until I saw these sequence of pictures that CNN obtained from....a.....that were taken by a Pentagon security camera." I remember 911 - and I've read PNAC.
We fully support our nation and its troops in this action. We call on all Americans to do likewise. Those who object to the use of military force have expressed their opposition in the fine American tradition of protest. But that argument has been settled. We are at war. All thought now should be for the safety of the men and women who are risking their lives for peace.
We would have liked more support from the U.N. But some nations -- namely France, Germany and Russia -- chose to see Iraq not as the threat to international security it is but rather as an opportunity for political gain. By refusing to back up its high-minded resolutions with a credible threat of force, the United Nations has ceased to be a relevant force for peace and security throughout the world.
As President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair appropriately pointed out, the U.N. stood silent as tragedy unfolded in Bosnia and Rwanda -- and hundreds of thousands of innocent people died. To continue that policy of passive acceptance in Iraq would be folly.
We are not acting "unilaterally." We have the full support of the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Australia and Poland as well as that of other Eastern European and Middle Eastern nations. Americans support this action by a 2-to-1 margin.
We do not wish for war. But we must deal realistically with the threat posed by Saddam Hussein's Iraq. He has maintained and expanded his arsenal of chemical and biological weapons even under economic sanctions. Those sanctions are causing grievous harm to the people of Iraq. Saddam continues to seek a nuclear capability. His wealth funds terrorist organizations and he could be a source of highly destructive weapons for those terrorists. He has twice launched wars against his neighbors and, if not checked, would do so again.
We pray that the war will be swiftly won, with minimal casualties on both sides, and that the Iraqis will be set free of Saddam's grip, able to pursue the life, liberty and happiness that are the God-given rights of all people.
In remarks Tuesday night at a symphony fund-raiser in Little Rock, Ark., Clinton said politics should be put aside right now -- to let the troops and the president know they have Americans' prayers and support.
Clinton said with thousands of America's finest young men and women and their allies in Iraq with their lives on the line, people should pray for their success and their safety.
