MILITARISM AND PRISONS
BREAKING OUR HEARTS, BREAKING OUR BUDGET

Stop Militarism Abroad and at Home:
-Cut funding for prisons and military
-Stop the war on Iraq
-Stop attacks on immigrants and youth
-Defend civil liberties
-Tax Corporate Wealth to Fund Our Social Services:
-No cuts in education
-No cuts to libraries, recreations centers, and public services.
-Fund Medicaid and other essential social services

The United States is the wealthiest nation in the world, why can’t it provide all its students and equitable and quality education?

In Fiscal Year 2003 federal spending for military will be double the total of local, state and federal
education spending; Communities of color are more likely to die in war: While Black people represent 10% of the U.S. population, they represent 20% of the U.S. military

The total number of inmates in local, state and federal prisons has quadrupled in the past 20 years to more than two million. Communities of color are often targeted: One of every four African-American males between the ages of 20 and 29 is in jail, prison, or on probation or parole; In California children of color are 6.2 times more likely that white youth to be charged with crimes

I'm glad to see this action, lots of different people coming together. We need to continue to do more and more organizing in Oakland.

I wanted to thank all who were there...there were so many people that inspired and brought hope to my heart...

I feel as educators we must acknowledge that education should be a mode of social change NOT social reproduction....keep figthing the good fight!

Valentine’s Day Rally
By Jonah Zern

Listening to the coverage of the rally in New York City today I hear calls for "Books Not Bombs". We are part of spreading a message that we cannot stop a war on Iraq without addressing the war being waged on working people, people of color and poor people of the United States. We cannot stop the war on Iraq and go home and forget that there are 2 million people in prison in the United States, that one in three black males between the ages of 20 and 29 is in prison, jail, on probation or parole. We cannot deny the conditions of poverty, lack of health care, lack of quality education under which people of color and poor people live. We cannot deny the role that the United States government and US corporations play in the oppression and abuse of the people of the world for their own economic gain and power.

We must see the connections. We must see that the media dehumanizes black people, Latino people, the same way they dehumanize Iraqi people and Muslim people. We must realize that the people of the world are our brothers and sisters, as are the people of every inner-city community in the United States. We must build a global community that does not justify sweatshops through "competitive advantage", does not justify a war on a people because of the belief that one human life is more valuable than another.. We must recognize Einstein's quote that one cannot simultaneously prepare and prevent for war, and Martin Luther King Jr.'s statement that unless their is a change in the malady of spirit in the United States that we will be marching against the same war for generations to come.

We must ask why there is such enormous wealth in our community right next to such immense poverty, and we must demand that it be distributed or we must seize it ourselves. Now is a great time of change in the world. It is essential that we chose to speak out and take action, for peace, equity, environmental preservation, and justice. We must be willing to take brave and bold actions, and we must demand nothing less than equity. We must search for truth and shun those who deny it for their own personal gain. Now is a time to speak out!

Which poll is that?

The Bush administration is talking about putting US administrators in the government of Iraq. I don't see how this will free them.

Romulus said, "For personal reasons of self importance they want to protest. Instead of coming from a educated position of informed dissent, their reaction to war is kneejerk..... Shouted down by the simplistic argument "America is bad too"! Followed by a list of reasons why. Which are usually wrong, conspiratorial, or taken out of historical context. "

Romulus, you want a list of reasons? Ask some Blacks and Native Americans. But wait, you will say that they are "usually wrong, conspiratorial, or taken out of historical context?" Smart person you are! Extraordinary Intelligence!

You should understand that we are saying no to war, not only for peace, but to pull the curtain on the imperialistic actions of this governement. Whats up HUEY?!

Do you truly believe that Uncle Sam's Government is seeking freedom for other people on this planet? REMEMBER Allende's Chile! What happened?

To prove that I am not biased, that I am educated, I will tell you that yes, people are living lives with greater freedom in Afghanistan after we removed a certain group. But remember, we were the ones that put them there in the first place.

Lets say that I go to someone's house and purposely set it on fire. Then they run out screaming and crying about how all their belongings are going to be ruined. What if I come back with a fire extinguisher and put it out? Will you thank and honor me? Will you say, "OH THANK GOD! THANK YOU! BLESS YOU for saving them!"

If you do, you either have an amazingly short memory or you are just plain stupid.

Education, go get it. Its free.
